The Quest for Flight

Throughout the history of Tortoisekind, one milestone continues to elude this rugged species: the ability to fly. Many of the greatest tortoise minds have tried and failed in their quest to become airborne, using everything from balloons…

I should have as many balloons as my age! So get 99 more!

… to an extremely tiny helicopter.

    Gorgeous creature.

Yes, Faye I think so, too.

Question – isn’t that a turtle? Don’t tortoises have flatter shells? Or is it the other way around.

I couldn’t tell the difference unless I saw it in the water, then I would know it was a turtle but according to the Youtube description it is indeed a tortoise.

I think tortoises have those stumpy legs and turtles have flippers?

        And, yes, lovely creature!

Tortoises have the bumpy shells, like this guy.

          That’s what I thought too.

Is it Mr. Happy Tortoise’s birthday? It’s mine too! 52 years young!

Wow! Have a very Happy Birthday, DEBG! And knit yourself something delicious !? (I used to make crocheted food)

Today is free ice cream at work to celebrate May-August birthdays (they used to do a treat every month, but they’ve been stretching it more and more the past couple years. I fully expect my October birthday treat no earlier than January).

Also, I forgot about that until Outlook reminded me (despite the fact that they mentioned it at our monthly all-office meeting just a few hours ago) and got a slice of cake with my lunch. I suppose I will just have to have ice cream and cake in your honor. Since my cake is chocolate, I guess I’ll go with vanilla ice cream. 🙂

(Edited to add: there were supposed to be ice cream and cake emojis in place of the words in “ice cream and cake” but I forgot they don’t post in this browser for some strange reason.)

Happy Birthday! 52! Those were the days! Well, actually not, in my case, now that I think about, but hoping for the best for you!

            • debg September 14, 2017 / 8:20 pm

Thank you all for the good wishes. For some reason, nearly all but 1 of my cards had a cat theme. I still haven’t figured it out.

Happy Birthday Debg! May this 53rd year bring you knitting adventures beyond compare! (I also kinda wish I could send you funds so I could fashion some of your wonderful work.)

I’ve been to parties where the host’s dog had a balloon like that to keep him from getting stepped on. It looks really silly in person, watching this apparently sentient balloon mingle with the guests.

    • Gigi the cat lady September 14, 2017 / 9:02 am

Wouldn’t it have been hilarious if they had used a balloon with a face on it? Then it would really have been a “sentient balloon mingle with the guests”. LOL!!

      • allein ? September 14, 2017 / 10:11 am

I would totally get a smiley face balloon if I were going to do that.

    re: hovertext

Would that be 99 luftballoons he wants?

All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. All toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads. I recite this many times every weekend while volunteering at a nature center that houses frogs, toads, and turtles.

Thank you, Claire, that’s very helpful. The right person for the job.
