A shoebill? I have never seen such a creature before!
They can get up to 5 feet tall!
Are they the inspiration for the drinking bird toy? And did they get their name because–when they bend over–it looks like their bill is pointing to their “shoes?”
I love these birds. I don’t know how they keep their heads up. 🙂
Look at this fabulous picture over at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park website: http://www.sdzsafaripark.org/wildlife/shoebill
That’s just amazing. What an interesting bird.
Are they engaged now?!
Such a noble creature. Human not so much.
At least going steady.
Doesn’t he look CGI’ed? He’d make a great Star Wars character!
How wonderful! I feel this shoebill represents beautifully the spirit of Botswana as exemplified in the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. If Botswana is not really like that, I don’t want to know.
I feel exactly the same way about Botswana courtesy of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (possibly the best thing ever presented on television – and the books are even better).
I can almost hear the shoebill saying “Actually I’m a dinosaur, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be polite.”
Well, his scientific name is Balaeniceps rex so clearly he’s a relative of the big T.
I think that bird is laughing at the end. “Geez, these humans really fell for my act! They really think we do this?!”
I have been introduced to a LOT of new animals bc of this site. The Shoebill might be the coolest one, yet.
Thanks, Mike!
I see now where that Harry Potter scene came from.
