Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the first Caturday of 2020! Miss Penny joins us today, indulging her favorite hobby, although reader Muppet2171 isn’t quite sure what it is: “Bird watching… or peeping the neighbors. Could be either to be honest.”

Oooh, oooh, I’m the first commenter for the new decade. Yeah me!!!

Beautiful girl, love her tail floof. Gonna be a busy Sat – farmer’s market, eye appt, some window shopping than hockey.

Hubby’s off on a business to Japan so there’s a few projects I’m going to do over the next few weekends around the house. I was planning to go with him as I’ve never been but with flights at around $2,000, hmmm not this time.

Hope everyone has a good first weekend of 2020!!

    Happy new year!

No big plans this weekend. It’s foggy and I don’t if we’ll actually see the sun today…

I think such a pretty kitty can watch whatever she wants out that window.

I’d like to see some video of those wrens in the elm tree.

      Bird p*rn?!?! šŸ˜²

      • Dulcie January 4, 2020 / 3:35 pm

Sometimes they don’t know all the best moves so they just wing it.

        • allein šŸ¾ January 4, 2020 / 3:48 pm

          so, amateur bird p*rn…

Never mind the wrens, you wouldn’t believe what robins get up to…

I had a very frustrating day yesterday. My dad had a 12.45 hospital appointment that turned into an eight-hour marathon, most of it spent waiting in a busy Surgical Assessment Unit. It turns out that his knee pains were caused by gout, and after having some fluid drained from his knee he’s feeling much better.

Sorry it took so long but glad that he’s feeling better.. My mother had a 9am shoulder surgery that didn’t happen till 9PM.

worst thing is that she couldn’t eat the whole time in case she went in. Did wonders for her blood sugar.

Cool window seat thing! Glad to know kitty is on the job but I need to see photos before I can comment on the wrens. šŸ˜€

My county’s SPCA had shut off adoptions over Christmas because of dog flu (I didn’t know that was a thing until a few weeks ago) and now they’re back in business. And I share that partly because yay! and partly just to have an excuse to share this picture.

(Joe, a pitty/hound mix, who’s feeling better now, thank you.)

    • dubravkamcvmd January 4, 2020 / 11:30 am

If that picture doesn’t get him adopted, I’d be amazed.

  7. birdlady26 January 4, 2020 / 11:25 am

Desperately in need of some cute today. Going to keep that picture of Miss Penny in my mind for the rest of the day, and go snuggle with my feral kitty Dancer. Well, maybe not snuggle, but be in the same room.

    Rant on:
Getting the run around from my new mail order pharmacy about getting my prescriptions transferred from the old pharmacy to the new one.

“Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.” “Should only take 48 hours.”

I’ve heard that excuse for the last 96 hours and after making yet another phone call today (the 4th one) got told “Should be by end of day Tuesday., or Wednesday, or Monday (per a voicemail today)”. Humm, tell people calling in to customer service anything, just say something and they’ll go away. Being a squeaky wheel, because this happened before to me and it took over a month to resolve.

I don’t believe a word that the ‘advocate’ says, no matter what they say. It will be a miracle if I actually get my medications. Advocate is the new word for customer service.rep these days. Obstructionist is a more accurate term.

Absolute nightmare. No wonder health care costs so much in this country.

    Rant Off.

    • dubravkamcvmd January 4, 2020 / 11:32 am

Not a rant. Totally justified. The pharmacy is a disgrace. Unfortunately there’s no one to complain to.

Shower Catty (and other kitty stuff).

    • dubravkamcvmd January 4, 2020 / 12:17 pm

This is great. Would start the day off right!

    It’s the weekend!
    Yay.
Miss Penny, come and visit, please. And gosh darn my breathing.
Spent two days angry with hubby for letting his boss screw him YET AGAIN! This morning, I told him I was no longer mad, just terribly disappointed. (Takes less energy) So he says he’s sorry, and then tells me he’s thinking of returning to his previous job this year, thus giving his previous boss a chance to screw him again!
    There. Feeling a bit better.
On a more positive note, I think I may have found my best weight loss method. Liquids only after 3pm. Eat all I want of what I want in the morning (within reason) and then stop eating at three. Three pounds this week. I’ll try it for a few weeks (except for roast beef Sundays) and see how it goes.
I made an appointment to see an adviser at the university about going back. Program requirements have changed, so I don’t know if I still need just three courses, or maybe four. Maybe I might be able to challenge a course or two (I’ve done it before).
I intend to find out about Duckie on Monday, no matter what. I just want to know.
Twin nieces turning eighteen on Sunday. Considering they were born fourteen weeks early, we are thrilled. Big party tomorrow.
Have a fantastic weekend everyone. And I echo our general wish, that 2020 be much better than 2019.
    Amen

Time Restricted Eating! also called intermittent fasting. Where you limit the hours of the day that you will eat. Works for me.

Sorry to hear hubbie is still struggling with his bosses.

Penny is such a beautiful cat!

Iā€™m happy to say that the first few days of 2020 have been pretty good. I am going to two conferences this year on topics of direct interest to my job, all on the company dime. My mortgage has been finalized and one additional benefit (besides saving a LOT of money over the term of the loan) is that I can skip two mortgage payments this year. My house is spotless (except for the ever-pervasive cat litter!), and my freezer and pantry are full of homemade food. I think I can just take the rest of the year off. šŸ˜‰

I learned last year that my favorite mode of vacationing is to pick one beautiful, semi-remote place and stay there long enough to feel slightly at home. So I am doing that for all my vacations this year ā€” including one (relatively close by) trip where my kittens get to join me! (Iā€™m experimenting to see how far their contentment with everything goes ā€” so far, they are good with the car, humans, cats, dogs, harnesses, and costumes. How about road trips?). Also planning on spending on glorious summer week at the Olympic National Park (without the cats).

And best of all, my goddaughter from the Netherlands will be living with me starting later this year. I am excited to think about how we can blend European and American traditions together. And to show her the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Happy Caturday and Happy New Year, everyone!

Penny looks gorgeous and pear-shaped. Such a girlie girl!

Alice, sorry about your dad’s health issues. Hope the knee continues to improve.
    Birdlady, pharmacies can suck.
Duckie, husbands can suck. I imagine.

I’m trying “natural” dyes for the first time today. Sure, the colors themselves come from nature, but the handspun yarn has to soak in some pretty toxic mordanting chemicals, so I’m not all dewy-eyed about natural dyeing the way some folks are. However, it will be a cool experiment!

Next week will be weird, working all 5 days. Better soak up all the fun I can this weekend!

Happy Caturday, everyone. Miss Penny is lovely! I am partial to her type of Siamese since I grew up with one.

Yoofi is having a MAJOR sulk because she’s in a Cone of Shame for a few days. She plays with the pack at the dog park, but greyhounds have incredibly thin skin that is stretched tight across their body, so she got a scratch on her back that popped about an inch of skin open — like it unzipped. The vet said let it heal naturally, but she has to wear the Cone until it’s scabbed over. Then she can wear Melody’s old Thundercoat, which will protect it nicely from her ability to reach her back by twisting her neck 180 degrees.

So she is not a happy camper. She doesn’t appreciate me pointing out that this wouldn’t happen if she played like a greyhound. We’ve decided that she’s a lab in a greyhound suit. Such a silly girl!

Other than watching her sulk, I am having a very quiet weekend. I worked over the holidays so I can relax and relax and knit now for a while. We’re having a rainy day, just a steady light drizzle, so it’s a nice day to stay in and do nothing important.

My husband had got in one foot and ankle some years ago. It’s no fun! My sympathies to your gouty husband, Alice. I’m glad he’s feeling better.

    Have a great week, everyone!

Someone has cut the grass and served it.

      • allein šŸ¾ January 4, 2020 / 9:58 pm

I would serve that cutie anything he wants.

I feel an overpowering urge to brush that fringe back and tie it up with a tartan ribbon.

The woman who does the Ologies podcast likes to encourage people to do the things they want because life’s short and all that (her tagline is “ask smart people stupid questions”)…one of her lines is “cut bangs” and I feel like this one is probably a fan.
