From Start to Finch

Watch a day by day look at baby finches

When you need a home, and you’re a finch, any place will do in a pinch. That’s what one lucky person discovered when a mama and papa finch built a nest full of eggs in a wreath next to the front door. Every day for the next 16 days, the parents hatched, guarded, fed and nurtured their hatchlings until one day… they were gone. (via Allein S.)

Day 2: all tiny hearts beating and all tiny lungs breathing in unison.

The best part is when you’ve forgotten all about something you sent in and then it shows up!

Fantastic! I once had finches build a nest on my porch but I can’t remember if they had any babies. Just love finches.

PS somebody always has to be on the bottom of the pile.

I am so overjoyed with the links and posts today Mike! Thanks so much for this site today (and every day!). The finches, the stealthy sofa dog, the links, the shy wombat! My heart!!

Except I was kinda devastated by day 17’s literal empty nest. 😥

So cute! And talk about squishing them in!

This fascinated me, because I had a similar situation. I have roll up blinds on my back porch. One spring, sparrows built a nest above one of the rolled up blinds. I delayed using that blind for weeks, not wanting to disturb the nest, then finally looked up there and discovered the nest had failed. (I’ve repressed whether I found decaying eggs or dead baby birds, but it wasn’t pretty.) I assumed my coming and going out the back door had spooked the adults and caused them to abandon the nest. But these finches raised their babies successfully with a human taking photos every day! — so, maybe it wasn’t my fault after all. And, yes, AJ, those baby birds were stacking them deep and selling them cheep by the end!

I, too, thought the nest a little crowded. They were really stacked up towards the end!

This is SO wonderful – those fuzzy little heads and greedy little mouths. And the poop-bedecked nest (and wreath!) by the end. We had a nest in a Christmas wreath on our main door which we don’t use all that much except to get mail and we opened and closed the door very carefully. It startled mama but didn’t discourage her and those nestlings made it ok. So, Michael, your comings and goings may not have had anything to do with those poor little birds, they could’ve been attacked by any number of marauders or the mother may have met with a bad end.
