Weekend Open Thread

Caturday is the perfect day to relax and pamper oneself, and today’s cat, sent in by reader Ruth V., also knows how to accessorize:

“Yes. Yes, I am gorgeous.” This is Shadow after a spa treatment (i.e. the groomer’s) to remove some mats and spruce her up for spring.

Well groomed black cat wearing bow tie.
The bow tie is the perfect touch.

    What beautiful eyes!

Shadow looks smug about her gorgeousness. I am upset with myself about my own stupidity. I volunteered to help with a high school reunion in June, specifically the in-person meal part. Unfortunately, I did not take into account that human beings are a big part of this. We asked who wanted to attend a brunch. As an example, one woman responded she was uncertain. She wanted to know if that was an acceptable response: she didn’t eat very much.

    • belphebe April 30, 2022 / 11:52 am

I can understand her concerns. What will the brunch cost? Was the price mentioned? Is it a set price or “pay for what you eat”? If the latter, the woman might we willing to attend so she can meet up with her classmates.
If it’s a set price – and a high price – she might not be willing to pay if she’s not eating.
But having said that, I agree: it is stressful dealing with people. Take a deep breath and just think of this as a “lesson learned” for next time… if there is a next time.

The woman is a psychiatrist. I think nothing more needs to be said.

      • Kar May 1, 2022 / 8:43 pm

Not to mention if she can eat what’s on the brunch menu. I have vegan friends and frankly, its a pain in the neck trying to remember where they can eat.

I get it, when you’re vegetarian, places like Fogo De Chao can be ridiculous. Even if they do have the best salad bar in the city.

She’s a beauty and the bowtie matches her eyes. Always loved me a house panther. And Dubra, that’s why I never attended any of my high school reunions. Even after all these years, so much drama with people. I have just one person I keep up with from school and I’m so excited that she’s coming out for a vacation in my city this summer.

Not much going on this weekend, one car is going in for an oil change, meetup with the car club and some house projects. Have three paint samples to test out for the dining room and some furniture to build. Once they’re assembled, I can finally get the kitchen organized. I always feel so accomplished once I finish a project.

    • Dulcie April 30, 2022 / 10:32 am

I usually don’t mind attending most functions. But organizing them is a whole different kettle of fish. An event cannot be tailored to suit each and every person attending!!! Off the top of my head i recall this one…”I’m not going to the staff BBQ because there’s only beer and wine and I would like sherry”. 🤯🤯🤯 SHERRY???

Shadow and the bowtie – sublime!

      • allein🐾 April 30, 2022 / 10:46 am

Who drinks sherry at a BBQ?

Shadow is lovely and her bow is adorable.

It’s another closing week coming up so I have to do work this weekend. Of course the one thing I have to do today appears to have not run so I will have to email IT.

Other than that, hoping to get some chores done and maybe make some brownies.

My mom said my dad was getting monoclonal antibodies, but it’s actually Paxlovid, which she also got. They spent their quarantine moving stuff out of the living room so they can get new carpet installed (it came in a few days after my dad tested positive so it’ll have to wait a couple weeks). Today is their last official day of quarantine.

If you’re happy and you know it, say awoo.

      👍🏼😁

      SO sweet!

    • Debg April 30, 2022 / 11:55 am

Fabulous! Chancellor knows how to look on the bright side!

      • Debg April 30, 2022 / 11:56 am

Also it sounds like your parents are doing all the right things. Hope they’re feeling okay.

        • allein🐾 April 30, 2022 / 1:38 pm

My dad felt like he had the flu; my mom had a headache on and off, slight fever (not sure it even went over 100), some stuffiness and a relatively minor cough. They were wearing masks in the house and will continue to do so when they have to go out (but they would do that, anyway).

My dad sent me a message on Tuesday night saying he needed me to get him allergy medicine which he was almost out of, and I was working from home Wednesday so I went out at lunch and did that. He left money under the windshield wiper of his car (he actually put it out there Tuesday night) and told me to leave it on the hood. So I did that, then called them from the garage and made them come poke their heads out the door (after I retreated toward the back end of the car). They looked fine and sounded pretty normal.

          • Kat May 1, 2022 / 8:57 pm

That’s good news. Glad that they’re handling things with aplomb and have minor effects.

    • AJ April 30, 2022 / 6:23 pm

Yeah for your parents and yeah for Chancellor, love that awoo. He’s much better at exercising then I am.

    • fkawaldenPond April 30, 2022 / 6:29 pm

      Too good.

    Shadow rocks that bow tie!

A few weeks ago I said that I had received bad news and wasn’t ready to talk about it. Well the bad news was my favourite brother in law was diagnosed with cancer and the prognostic is that he has between 1 and 5 years to live because he has refused further treatment. He’s had cancer before and the option open to him are limited, the operation would be hard and would not prolong is life by that much.

He’s 82 and has he says he’s had a good life and never thought he would live this long and after thinking about it I realized that I would do the exact same thing,
I think I took it so badly at first because we just lost my mother in law last year but we’re all getting older and those kind of goodbyes are going to get more frequent I guess.

Well that’s it for me this week, take care and have a good weekend everyone.

    • allein🐾 April 30, 2022 / 10:08 am

      Sending virtual hugs.

    • 6rabbits April 30, 2022 / 10:16 am

      More hugs to you!

    • Dulcie April 30, 2022 / 11:24 am

So sorry Georgiana. Such a difficult and painful time. In spite of the decision not to continue treatment being the right one for him, it doesn’t make it any easier.
      Hearts ❤️ and hugs 🤗

    • Dubravkamcvmd April 30, 2022 / 11:27 am

      That’s hard. I’m sorry.

    • Debg April 30, 2022 / 11:57 am

Hugs, Georgiana. My dad made the same decision to refuse treatment, and it was the right decision for him too. But you’re right–the goodbyes are never easy.

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom April 30, 2022 / 1:22 pm

I am sorry for your bad news. You seem to have arrived at a helpful perspective, but I’m sure there will be moments, hours, days, when that eludes your grasp. Wishing you strength and comfort.

    • AJ April 30, 2022 / 6:31 pm

So sorry for your news. It’s always hard when a decision has been made not to pursue treatment but we have to remember it’s their decision to make. The best thing the rest of us can do is respect it and spend as much time with them as you can.

    • Kar May 1, 2022 / 8:47 pm

I’m so sorry for your news, this must be hard.

I”m glad that he has you and your family.

Here’s something that struck me as funny:

I get the Morning Brew email newsletter and there’s a section with links to things that could be conversation starters or whatever (I forget the title; already deleted it). One of them was “Could you finish 102 marathons in 102 days?”

    I probably couldn’t finish 1 marathon in 102 days. 😂

(Then I went to facebook and the first thing I see is a post-race picture from my cousin’s wife, who is on a “racecation” with some friends at the Kentucky Derby Festival Mini-Marathon. She also does triathlons.)

    • Debg April 30, 2022 / 11:59 am

My favorite comedian, Eddie Izzard, has does several marathon challenges for charity. The last one was IIRC 28 runs in 28 days, in South Africa. It comes up in their truly hilarious autobiography, Believe Me, read by Eddie. Highly recommended reading.

      • Dulcie April 30, 2022 / 12:59 pm

I wonder what he wears at the runs? 🤔

        • Ricky & Bibi's Mom April 30, 2022 / 1:23 pm

          Runs in his stockings?

          • Dulcie April 30, 2022 / 2:19 pm

            🤣🤣😁😜😂🤣

        • allein🐾 April 30, 2022 / 3:07 pm

I’ve seen some pictures of her (wikipedia says Eddie now uses she/her*) running in shorts and a t-shirt. Not sure how recent they were. Saw one on an article from last year in a yellow windbreaker (and pink lipstick).

          *but “doesn’t mind” he/him

          • Dulcie April 30, 2022 / 4:43 pm

You know after I posted I thought about the pronoun and wondered if I should have tried harder to figure it out. I always had it in my head as he/she but not used to writing it down that way.

  7. Debg April 30, 2022 / 12:04 pm

Happy Caturday, everybody! Hello to gorgeous Shadow, who’s beautiful and has the right attitude about her looks.

I head out soon to see homes by another builder. Then I’ve got a phone call scheduled with my nephew, then dinner with friends. It’s a busy day.

The planned talk with my nephew warms my heart: when he and his dad and sister came out for a visit, he immediately noticed my books and asked about one by my favorite author. He proceeded to read one of her novels, then he texted to say he’d finished and could we discuss it? Of course we can! Those are the words I always wanted to hear as a bookworm kid in a non-book family! It seems as though the children of my half-brothers got the reading gene, and there’s nothing in the world that makes me happier.

  8. Duckie 🐥 April 30, 2022 / 12:07 pm

Shadow, come here for a cuddle and I’ll tell you how lovely you are.
Georgiana, you’re in our thoughts and prayers.

Duckie losing iridescent feathers (Mike has a pic).
Fed baby geese yesterday. Got bit by a duck.
Being sent for heart MRI, and to see neurologist for foot. Docs worried about kidneys.
Looking to get e-blade scooter with seat, for short trips around here.
Have a good weekend, and stay safe.

    • Debg April 30, 2022 / 3:05 pm

Those are perfect chips on a perfectly delightful face.

  9. allein🐾 April 30, 2022 / 4:49 pm

    Anyone want a cupcake?

    • AJ April 30, 2022 / 6:39 pm

*raising hand excitedly* Oooh, ooh, me, me, me! They look scrumptious.

      • allein🐾 April 30, 2022 / 7:07 pm

I’m not sure I could eat them! They’re so cute!

    • Dulcie April 30, 2022 / 6:50 pm

Oh no. Always hard to bear the loss of a furbaby. 💔
