Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the open thread, where you can talk about whatever’s on your mind. And today’s visitor is a sweet old girl from reader Georgiana Y., napping in her favorite spot:

Minnie is 15 years old so she needs a lot of rest and the back of the sofa is the perfect place to take a nap.

Sleeping cat
It’s like a giant comfy leg.

Minnie looks like she’s got the perfect spot for some serious resting – supportive yet soft cushion, high vantage point, and back protected. Aaaaaah.

I am out of the brace I wore for five weeks for my fractured kneecap. Six weeks of physical therapy ahead. Progress as good as could be expected.

Wow, that had to have been so painful! Good luck with re-hab. It’s painful but necessary.

    • Debg June 4, 2022 / 12:11 pm

Yeeks. I’m glad the brace is gone but oh this must be painful. Best of luck to you.

      Yikes, yay, and you go!

Happy weekend everyone! Minnie looks so comfy and love how she’s using her tail as a nose warmer. So fluffy and looks so soft too. Ouch Dubravka, good luck with PT. Hope your knee feels better soon.

    • Dulcie June 4, 2022 / 1:45 pm

I’m enamored with that silky floof too!

Hang in there Dubra…it will be worth it. I hope??

      Happy weekend to all!! 🌷☀️🐦😸🐕🐾

Yes Minnie loves that spot the only other spot she loves more is the middle of my bed, I try to give her extra cuddles so she doesn’t feel neglected since we are concentrating more on Beans these days.

The latest news on Beans is that she had an injection Thursday afternnon to treat a unitary track infection after they did a urine analysis and the vet said getting rid of it may help her kidney function (fingers crossed). It seems to have already had an effect because her appetite is a little better and she accepts to eats the new dry food the vet prescribe which is great. She’ll have another injection in two weeks.

The sad thing is I’m stuck with the 4 full bags of kibble I had bough to tempt her to eat and I asked but no shelter will accept open bags and there is no cat colony around here that I could give it to. I guess I’ll put in with the food waste for recycling, they make natural gas with it here instead of compost so it’s not a total waste.

Hope everyone has a good weekend, DUBRAVKAMCVMD good luck with the physical therapy I hope it’s not too painful and you make a full recovery.

Good news about Beans! And thanks everybody for your good wishes.

Just a suggestion — is there a wildlife rehabber near you? They often take cat and dog kibble (mostly for feeding young or recovering raccoons and skunks) and they might not care that the bags are open. Just a thought. Though you are so lucky to have food waste recycling — and that they use it to make gas! Wish my community was so forward thinking.

      • Georgiana June 4, 2022 / 1:55 pm

No wildlife rehabber near me, we do have raccoon and skunks around but I don’t think the neighbours would approve of me feeding them LOL!

      • J June 4, 2022 / 3:36 pm

There are lots of skunks (I love these), raccoons, foxes, coyotes, … around me too and I never even consider leaving pet food outside — no way do I want to feed them either 🙂 But for those animals undergoing rehab (either orphaned or injured), I know the wildlife refuge place that is closest to me (about 60km away) is always asking for dog and cat food and will even take fairly recently expired food for the creatures in their care. But you have an amazing option — food waste recycling for generating gas. I’m still in awe over this!

I forgot to add how wonderful it is that Beans seems to be improving. Such a relief!

    • Duckie 🐥 June 4, 2022 / 12:57 pm

Do you know of a homeless encampment nearby that might have pets?

      • Georgiana June 4, 2022 / 1:50 pm

No thank goodness there’s no homeless encampment in my town.

    • Dulcie June 4, 2022 / 1:49 pm

That happened to me once and I ended up posting on Facebook to give away. It worked well…the folks fed strays all the time.
A friend asked her vet to recommend someone that could use some help with the cost of special diets and that worked out too.

Minnie is lovely and obviously understands about napping. And good news about Beans too. Wish we could figure out something to do with the kibble bags! No neighbors or coworkers with cats?

I’m having a lazy day on a lazy weekend. Hey, it’s a weekend day ending in Y, right? I’ve got a new audiobook to start, gift gloves to knit, and a fun project on the loom.

I’ve been searching for evening wear inspiration: my college apartment-mate’s daughter gets married in September, and if I can go, I can make something spectacular to wear. I’ve been wearing jeans and sweaters pretty much nonstop for the past 7 years; all my sewing patterns are for a younger, differently shaped body; I don’t wear dresses anymore. Hence the need for inspiration. Fortunately, I’ve found some fantastic patterns for very wide-legged pants that will look like skirts. Something will click in my brain as I let things simmer!

Happy Caturday, everybody. Extra hugs to Minnie, Beans, and Dubrav.

Deb, I decided the other day that I’m going to be eccentric by choice. I bought or made several floppy brim hats, and ribbons or fabric to match my sundresses, and I’m going to wear them as I want. And I’m going to buy some fabric that I like, not just fabric that suits 50 year old me, and I’m going to make a few sundresses out of it. I’m thinking butterflies or dragons. Or maybe a fruit pattern!

      • Debg June 4, 2022 / 2:35 pm

I love that you’re embracing eccentricity. It’s so much healthier than trying to hide it!

Wide-legged pants worked for me in my 40s; I just don’t have any now that fit. So I’m going back to them. In a light silk, they’ll be very dressy. I can also show off my weaving skills with this new ensemble–just finished a silk scarf that I *had* to wear on Tuesday. I’ve got plenty of time to plan and execute this new ensemble, hopefully using fabrics that have been sitting around for years, waiting to be used.

        • Duckie 🐥 June 4, 2022 / 5:55 pm

Deb, I’m sorely tempted to wander over to your place and see just what sorts of things you have ‘sitting around’.

          • Debg June 4, 2022 / 8:47 pm

If I ever get to move, there will be a lot of destashing. Who know what will be up for grabs?! Stay tuned!

            • Duckie 🐥 June 4, 2022 / 9:10 pm

              Duckie makes grabby hands

    • Dulcie June 4, 2022 / 1:52 pm

I LOVE that look of the wide leg pants! Great idea. The same pattern can be used for “formal” fabric and the opposite with casual fabric!

      And Duckie…you go girl!!
And hope you are feeling better. 💕

      Same to you Pablo ❤️

Not sure how my comment posted twice..?

      • Debg June 4, 2022 / 2:36 pm

Naps are wonderful things. I’m looking forward to one very soon. Hope you’re feeling better.

        And Pablo–HONNNNKKKKKK.

It’s the weekend, at least for me. Hubby’s weekend starts Tuesday.
Minnie, you look very comfortable. I’d love to join you.
Crazy weather here right now. Cooler than average temps, but the humidity is pushing 100% from all the rain. The rain’s good for keeping the forest fires under control, but it’s not the best for our growing season.
Last Monday, my sisters, my parents and I got together here and had The Talk. We covered a LOT of topics, and now know what my parents want for end of life care, financial plans for their children and property disposal. There were a few unexpecteds, such as demands why X happened, and bulk responsibility taken for things that happened long ago. I admit I had intended to request some apologies for a few things, but my parents accepting responsibility before I even thought of bringing them up oddly enough eased my pain.
We felt closer once we decided to stop for the day, and there was a unanimous request to make a get together like this as often as possible. It will always be here, by vote, as I live in a condo complex, and no one else can come into the building unless I buzz them in. Everyone else has front doors accessible from the yards, but I have the extra door, not to mention being higher from the ground than the others. Yes, I honestly believe that other members of my side of the family would try to eavesdrop, or even bully their way in to find out what’s going on.
My darling Duckie, who had been an angel through most of the conversation, was sitting on her perch at the front of the cage, making random comments throughout, when she decided that we needed a distraction. She did a fly around the room, skimming everyone’s heads, and returned to her cage, where she complacently chirped. Four people grabbed theirs chests over their hearts and patted their heads, all at the same time, while I called Duckie a good girl. It was so perfectly done that it looked like it had been choreographed.
Dubravka, take care with your PT. Georgiana, glad to hear that Beans’ situation is cautiously optimistic.

    • Debg June 4, 2022 / 2:38 pm

Good for you and your family! Healing is a wonderful thing. It sounds like everybody benefited from clearing the air.

    • Dubravkamcvmd June 4, 2022 / 5:52 pm

It’s great that you had a family meeting that seems to have worked out so well. My family was small and we never talked about anything. Just reading about your meeting makes me feel emotionally wrung out. I think your family’s approach is the more productive one.

  6. Alice Shortcake June 4, 2022 / 4:06 pm

It’s been a weird week at the Shortcakery. On Tuesday night, during what must have been an alarming dream, I punched myself in the face so hard I bruised my nose and scratched off a bit of skin. On Wednesday a filling the size of a dried pea fell out of an upper left molar and somehow left a hole that feels more like the size of a marble (these two incidents may be connected). And for the past two days I’ve marvelled at the BBC’s desperate determination to whip up some enthusiasm for the Platinum Jubilee, an event in which only 11% of the population describe themselves as being “very interested” and only 14% intend to celebrate in any way. My local supermarket hired extra staff to cope with the crowds of revellers and found themselves twiddling their thumbs when said revellers failed to materialise.

    • Dulcie June 4, 2022 / 5:38 pm

Yes but the “very interested” are VERY INTERESTED!
Including those in the colony. Canada that is.

Interesting dream – what the heck was going on in your head? 🤔🤣

    • Dubravkamcvmd June 4, 2022 / 6:53 pm

I admire your equanimity. If I had punched myself in the face while sleeping, I would be viewing myself with, uh, concern. Then again I panic pretty easily.

    • Debg June 4, 2022 / 8:46 pm

Alice, do you need to be protected from yourself? (kidding, of course)

I’ve barely noticed the jubilee, I’m afraid. Too many other things going on over here.
