It’s time for the giraffes to leave the barn — but one shy boy won’t stick his neck out. In this excerpt from The Secret Life of the Zoo, the newborn calf just wants to stay in, worrying his caretakers. It’ll take a nudge from his mom to get him going.

I can never quite wrap my head around the fact that newborn giraffes are more than half a foot taller than I am. They don’t seem so big when the doors are proportional to them…until a person comes along and you realize how high up that half door goes…
I know,
how can something SO-O-O tall look SO-O-O teeny.
I realized Iโd never seen a giraffe next to a person. Giraffes are the size of buildings!
That moment the keeper came into the picture! Mind-blowing.
Plus, I enjoyed all the northern accents. I wonder if any of the keepers we heard are actually native to Chester.
When the lady came out to open the door, did the size comparison startle anyone besides me?
I loved when the baby started galloping around๐
I was not expecting the human to be that short!
Giraffe eyelashes.
Stroking a giraffe neck is now added to my bucket list.
I’ve seen giraffes in real life so it wasn’t surprising to me. They are quite tall. I even got to feed one. You have to hold out a branch and munch on the leaves. It’s awesome!
I’ve fed them too and it’s wonderful. They have purple tongues.
We were on a raised platform, at their eye level.
Love to watch them zoom around!
Yup.
But it’s a big scary world out there, don’t make me go. Ohh, mama’s here and heading out so it must be ok.
