Regarding the orangutan, it may be the first time that we have photographic evidence but it’s certainly not the first time it happened, how do you think human learned to use medicinal plants in the first place? By watching animals that’s how.
I extremely doubt we learned it from watching animals. We *are* animals after all, and were not-quite-human apes for a couple million years before we reached anatomical modernity. The first homo sapiens sapiens–wherever you draw the exact cutoff–probably already had medicine and alcohol.
On that last point, chimps (and possibly others) have been observed deliberately seeking out fallen and fermented fruit to get their drank on as a social activity. Because if there was something the world really needed, it’s a bunch of drunk chimps. :V
