Why, no, no I haven’t. I thought it was mythical, like a purple cow.

I can say with total confidence that I’ve never in fact seen this before but I’m glad that I now have!

The possum has made its peace with being a human child.

I hate to be that person, but this is an opposum, not a possum. Possums are native to Australia and New Zealand and look quite a bit different than opposums you find in North America.

Cuteness aside, opposums are very useful because they eat ticks that can cause Lyme disease. So support you local opposum population!

I don’t know who decided to name them so similarly that people get confused.

Well, they are all marsupials. And even Wikipedia points out that opossums are normally referred to as possums. Here’s my favorite (o)possum:

“Opossum” is from an Algonquin word. The English settlers in the new world pretty much just asked the locals what to call anything they weren’t familiar with, which is also why our moose are called moose rather than elk as they are in Europe.

The Australian possum is called possum because the first British settlers there had already heard of the American opossum, which had by that time already had its everyday name abbreviated to ‘possum. So it was the natural name for a vaguely rodent-like critter with a pouch. But they weren’t aware of the etymology because the internet didn’t exist and they were variably-educated convicts.

NTMTOM didn’t use the wrong name; he just dropped the apostrophe.
