I knew of the incredible work African giant pouched rat were doing in finding mines and identifying Tuberculosis samples but not about them being trained for search and rescue.
Rhinos asking for kisses and belly rubs is adorable, they do act like big puppy dogs. I suppose they can’t be released back into the wild if they are that used to human contact. Maybe they put them in a reserve or something when they get to adulthood?

When I donated money for a baby heffalump Mike featured here, I got onto the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust mailing list. They rescue rhinos as well as elephants. I’m pretty sure rhinos do get released back into the wild, or at least near the wild. Their website will have lots of stories.
The director of Sheldrick says, “To see a baby rhino is to fall in love.” I agree 100%.

LOVE surfs up penguin!!💙 Penguins don’t see humans as nasty predators and I think that is SO COOL!!
I need to go to Tanzania and train rats!!
I remember reading an article about these rats with my class in the early 2000s, and we were all amazed by what they can do. But this is even better.😁 I’ve had pet rats before and the only bad thing about them is they only live a couple years, but these rats live SEVEN! That is so cool! ( A 9lb rat weighs more than my bunny!😳)

I appreciate Niagara County SPCA’s affinity for alliteration. 🙂

I could have met this parrot if I’d known!

Love all these links so much. I’m missing my family now that I’m home, and those baby rhinos are cheering me up. The rats are AMAZING–I might be able to get over my phobia if they rescued me.

Rhinos remind me of extra large puppy dogs with the running and spinning an lap climbing and giving kisses. Animals from food is amazing! I’d probably end up starving because they’re too gorgeous to eat. Penguin on a surfboard gives new meaning to the term surfing safari. What a cool encounter. Pepper the profane parrot is my spirit animal. Wish I lived closed, I’d love to give her a home. Reminds me of the story that when my grandparents managed a hotel in Digby NS Canada, there was a parrot left behind by a sea captain. And it must have been Pepper’s ancestor ’cause it was a spicy pepper. Told the local church pastor to “Go to Hell” when asked if it wanted a cracker, and sang “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles”.
