Here’s an alternative fact about sloths: They’re not upside-down, they actually have mouths on the tops of their heads. And those mouths love to express themselves, as you’ll see when you watch this video of baby sloths.
“Wait βtil the yawn at the very end!” advises sender-inner Murray C.
Squee! (thud – fainted) – just what the doctor ordered – thank you Murray and Mike!
I need a baby sloth hug RIGHT NOW.
Hold on – I’m deploying Sloth Team 6!
I’ll look for it to arrive in a month or so! Thanks so much.
Hahaha.
I LOL’d at 1:20!!!
What a bunch of upside down cuties β€β€β€
I’m sorry to be a downer, but this sloth sanctuary has also gotten some negative press for its care of the animals, e.g., this article on the website The Dodo [https://www.thedodo.com/sloths-sanctuary-nightmare-1807794384.html]. The Dodo may not be the most high-brow site there is, but I thinks it’s considered basically legit.
Thank you for telling me. I’ve removed the link to the sanctuary from this article, and I’ll avoid content shot there in the future.
I’m so sad, it so disheartening when you think people are doing good and they are not.
I’m so sorry, I didn’t think to check that out. Did something clue you in to prompt the investigation? Or are you just so astute! Good on you.
I remember reading questions about the sanctuary some months ago; most likely, I had Googled it after seeing some cute photos. Also, I’m a science editor and tend to ask questions (I can even be annoying . . . ).
Annimator, it’s good of you to post this info. But I would caution everybody to treat one story, based on the word of 2 former employees, with some caution. I’d like to see some corroborating evidence. There may well be problems; but as far as I know, nobody else in Central America is studying sloths the way this group does. (Or I’m biased because I’ve donated there.)
Deb G, That’s why I intentionally didn’t say anything more definitive than that the sanctuary “had gotten some negative press.”
I just looked for more info and haven’t been able to find much. I hope the negative stories aren’t true–the news is breaking my heart right now.
Oh, this makes me so sad. The sloths in the video are very, very cute. Was anyone able to come through all the comments on the Dodo site to find the petition links mentioned? I did see one link that took me to a site entirely in Spanish, which alas I do not speak, read, or write. I think it was a government contact site, but my language limitations mean I can’t take proper advantage of the access.
Well, I appreciate the alternative-facts, talk-amongst-ourselves’ good-meaning sentiment; sorry about the sketchy care at the sanctuary. Mike, I tell ya, you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t… π π But! Tomorrow is tgif!
My former boss has been with the company for 30 years. You get a trip for that. He and his wife are going to Costa Rica. I asked if they were going to the sloth sanctuary but they won’t be near there.
(It just occurred to me, his wife also works for the company as a store manager. Not sure how many years she has in, but they could end up getting two trips.)
I’ve been watching this over and over. Those sweet faces! And their fur looks so soft. I want to just pick up these guys, coddle them and carry them around all day. Oh, and feed them hibiscus flowers.
