Maru Meets the Beetle

Earlier this year, Maru and Hana welcomed an unusual visitor: a rhinoceros beetle, one of those big bugs whose hooked horn makes it look like a walking can opener. This intrigues Maru, who imagines he might enlist the newcomer in a raid of the tuna pantry. The beetle refuses, however, and returns to its natural habitat as Maru and Hana say farewell.

Wait, so the first scene of the clip is described as in August. Then everyone is out in the garden and Mugumogu says it’s October. This means that everyone has been living with a GIANT BEETLE in the house for months?!?!? Okay I understand that Japan is a different culture but nonetheless beetles are insects and this one is a GIANT insect. That said, seeing Maru and Hana sitting on the porch steps in their backyard with their pet rhinoceros beetle, sniffing the October breeze, listening to a bird cawing – I’d like to be Mugumogu’s pet.

Right?!?! I don’t like any creepy crawlers, but Mike said it…this is one ginormous walking can opener.

That said, Maru is such a gentle giant. He and Hana are so sweet and I always love their outdoor nature videos.

The beginning is like an old B&W Swedish noir movie, with Hana in profile in the background and the angst of our slow march to death portrayed by Maru and the beetle.

I didn’t see it that way but now that you point it out – LOL

I like to think of it as a sequel to “Metamorphosis”. One day a Japanese cat woke up to discover that he’d been transformed into a rhinocerous beetle, but luckily he was still able to communicate with other Japanese cats – hence the “sitting together on the porch” scene at the end.

          This is a brilliant concept.

Maru looked so disappointed when the beetle walked away from him! What were he and the beetle saying to each other in Japanese?

Maybe a tomato? XD My first thought was it looks like a Maraschino cherry

Looks to me like a maraschino cherry, but do they get that big? Maybe it’s a fruit that’s exclusive to Japan.

Dunno, but I love his wiggly mouth bits. He’s a cutie. :3

I like him, too – I think he’s really handsome – I love insects and bugs – really, all critters. Even the scary or creepy ones are to be admired.

Me too. They say these can be pets… hmmm.

That scene on the porch is lovely, with the nasturtiums and bird (?) calls. And of course Maru’s round white mittens.

I think rhino beetles/stag beetles are a very popular pet in Japan (see, it pays to spend all that time on RocketNews!)
