This picture makes my feet feel warm. ?

Happy Saturday! Today my car has a doctor’s appointment and I plan to work on the big, thick book I’m reading while I wait. Somehow I don’t think I’ll finish it before it’s due back at the library, and I think I’m out of renewals (I really shouldn’t get multiple books at one time). I guess I’ll be owing them some money; oh well.

Thought you’d all enjoy this NY Lottery commercial that’s been airing here a lot lately. (Not that I’m encouraging gambling, or anything.)

Oh, I love that commercial! There’s another one in the series where the guy’s big dream is building a giant sofa-pillow castle with his kids – very sweet.

    • Murray C. February 11, 2017 / 9:16 am

      That’s GREAT!

I’m off to Redbank NJ today to visit friends who just downsized – haven’t seen their new tho’ temporary digs.

      • allein ? February 11, 2017 / 9:27 am

Waving from half an hour north! Now you’ve made me crave fajitas from Carlos O’Connor’s.

Smartypants – yeah, the fort one is cute, too, but it does not have doggers! πŸ˜‰

          • Murray C. February 11, 2017 / 8:24 pm

Hysterical! That whole series has some pretty amusing moments.

          • allein ? February 11, 2017 / 9:13 pm

            I love those. πŸ™‚

I just got back from skiing for the first time ever! Considering I was born in the mid 1960s I am very proud of myself (but my colleague who teaches PE did a terrific job of teaching me the basics)! We did the little hill several times and the middle hill once. Then I sat outside at the restaurant and drew the surrounding mountains, much to the delight of a little girl and her dad who sat at my table. I’m calling this weekend a success…

    • Murray C. February 11, 2017 / 9:19 am

I only ever got to ski once and it was fabulous but I had a crisis of confidence and was too exhausted to take on another run. Never had the opportunity since. Sigh. I believe that if I’d begun earlier I would’ve just LOVED it.

Good for you, N. Fritz, for giving it a go and I hope you have lots more opportunities.

      • debg February 11, 2017 / 10:36 am

Y’all are crazy but far more brave than I am. Going downhill on skinny sticks of wood? That just sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

        • Allu February 11, 2017 / 12:18 pm

Cross country is the real skiing! Snowy woods, or frozen lake, no hills to be afraid of!

          • Amyliz February 11, 2017 / 3:35 pm

I managed to break my collarbone cross country skiing when I was in high school!

          • N. Fritz February 12, 2017 / 4:07 am

Allu, I’ve had cross country skis since high school which I’ve used maybe 5 times (due to no-snow winters or living in sub-tropical climates). I’m wondering if I shouldn’t pick it up again now that I am in a place with a healthy x-country ski culture!

        • N. Fritz February 12, 2017 / 4:10 am

DebG, I rarely do any sports out of my comfort zone so my introduction to skiing was a real physical and mental challenge! And yes, I am worried about breaking bones or worse, causing an accident!

      • N. Fritz February 12, 2017 / 3:58 am

Thanks, Murray C.! My experience yesterday was similar to yours: lack of self-confidence and fatigue after 2.5 hours. But I want to try again sometime so I think that speaks volumes!

    • Rachel February 11, 2017 / 8:57 pm

Congratulations! I have lived in a ski town for nearly 10 years and while I don’t ski, they start ’em YOUNG here. As in two or three. There are few cuter things than a group of three-year-olds on their tiny little skis. πŸ™‚ As I don’t feel like having a three-year-old outski me, well, I think I will stay out of their way.

      • allein ? February 11, 2017 / 9:16 pm

My friend just got her five-year old started this winter. She had a blast.

      • N. Fritz February 12, 2017 / 4:04 am

Thanks, Rachel! It’s the same around here… little kids on mini skis zooming past at lightning speed. But they don’t have far to fall and don’t realize what sort of consequences can follow. I had been reluctant to even try because of fear of broken bones or worse. But I only ended up with a couple of bruises (including my ego!) ?

  4. Caz February 11, 2017 / 9:28 am

    A kaleidoscope of beautiful kitties!

I’ll be preparing for another foot of snow tomorrow πŸ™

  5. Jan February 11, 2017 / 10:10 am

Screwed up my back and can barely move this morning. Lily wants “just 5 more minutes, mom” and I heartily agree with her!

    • debg February 11, 2017 / 10:31 am

Oh, Jan! So sorry. Hopefully purr therapy will ease your pain.

      • Caz February 11, 2017 / 11:22 am

I have read that cats purr when unwell because the vibrations help with the healing, maybe kitty could lie on your back and purrrrrrrr. Hope you feel better soon!

    • Ricky's Mom February 11, 2017 / 11:46 am

      Feel better soon, Jan!

    • Gigi the cat lady February 11, 2017 / 1:38 pm

I don’t know if you have this stuff in the States, we can get it without a prescription in Canada and it works wonders!

    • Murray C. February 11, 2017 / 8:16 pm

Nooooo! Can you do any stretches? I do something to my back – lower, can happen with the simplest movement – and I do Yoga stretches which help enormously.

    • Jan February 12, 2017 / 10:16 am

Thanks all! Lily’s “5 more minutes” was exactly that, 5 minutes. But time and tide must not delay the royal kitteh breakfast, so I had to get moving. πŸ™‚

I’m a little stiff this morning, but much better. I think I’ll go to the pool this morning and sit in the whirlpool jets.

Here’s Lily playing with the computer, because anything that moves is fair game!

  6. AJ February 11, 2017 / 10:26 am

Such cuties! A friend of mine has a new kitty in the house, a beautiful black house panther. Sigh, reminds me of my Shadow, gone now for a few years but always missing him. New cat has a great name – Ted Nugent (even tho my hubby thought he should have been named Ozzy!) Her other cat is Alice Cooper. Hmmm, anyone sensing a theme? LOL

Not much going on today. Was up too late so in need of major coffee infusion. Plus I took pupster for a potty break at 2:30 am. He’s not feeling too good for some reason and he’s been having accidents in the house. Not sure if it’s physical (UTI or bladder infection) or behavioral. His routine was a little upside down this week so maybe next week it will improve. I’m keeping an eye on him and for now, taking him out for more potty breaks.

Today will be spent running a few errands and then have a hair appointment later. Tomorrow early Valentines dinner and then HOCKEY!!!!! I’m not in the mood to deal with the crowds on Tues so I suggested we celebrate early plus Tues we have another hockey game. Go Gulls!

Another quiet weekend for the cats–we had a lot of excitement on Monday, so this is perfect. The excitement: Albus Severus (Sevi) my oldest boy came to work for a photo shoot. He hated the car ride, loved sitting in my office where everybody stopped by to adore him, then didn’t like the studio with the flashing lights. But he was a real trooper and we got some great shots of him.

This weekend, I hope to finish two–maybe three?–nearly finished sweaters. One 68″ i-cord, one yoke, and one sleeve will do the trick!

    • Murray C. February 11, 2017 / 8:19 pm

Yes, you had mentioned his upcoming photo shoot. Glad it went reasonably well and that Sevi got some much deserved attention. (will work for adoration?)

  8. debg February 11, 2017 / 10:37 am

And those beautiful boys look so happy! There’s nothing more sweet than a cuddle of cats, purring together.

    • Smartypants February 11, 2017 / 12:21 pm

It’s like a 3-leafed Celtic knot made entirely of cats.

Love the idea that you’re featuring your kitties in your materials – sounds like a hit to me.

My little town is having a “Chocolate stroll” this morning. You pick up a bag and a map, and then go around to all the businesses in town that are participating and collect chocolate. Someone described it as trick-or-treating for adults without costumes. πŸ˜€ The businesses get to introduce people to what they do, we get chocolate, and we can exercise some of it off by walking around town, so it’s win-win-win!

    • debg February 11, 2017 / 12:08 pm

I want to live in your town.

    • Smartypants February 11, 2017 / 12:19 pm

What a great idea – enjoy!

    • Gigi the cat lady February 11, 2017 / 1:44 pm

Walk a little, get chocolate. and repeat ad nauseam = perfect way to spend the day!

    • SoccerSue February 11, 2017 / 8:18 pm

It was SO much fun! With only 1 $15 ticket (they asked couples to share so more people could experience the stroll), we collected a whole bag of chocolate- mostly gourmet-type stuff, or full-size candy bars, brownies, etc. Had a lot of fun chatting with the business owners, too. One of them asked what we got if we went to every place on the map. I said, “FAT!” πŸ˜€

    • Murray C. February 11, 2017 / 8:19 pm

Ooo, yeah! Great concept. Well, maybe not the fat part.

  10. Laura February 11, 2017 / 2:56 pm

Sounds like people are having nice weekends. Except Jan — ow ow! I checked and that Voltaren Emulgel isn’t available in the US (drat it! I’ve taken Voltaren and it’s just an amazingly good NSAID), but both Aspercreme and Biofreeze are good OTC pain rubs. I particularly like the Biofreeze; I’ve used it successfully for years. And as long as your doctor says there’s no structural damage, a good massage never hurts! Apply cold packs for the first 24 hours, at least, before switching to heat; heat feels better, but cold shrinks inflammation, whereas heat increases it. πŸ™

I speak from experience on all of this! But you can never, ever go wrong with cold packs, 20 minutes on once every 2 hours. Or the rubs.

I’ve had a quiet week, just really busy work-wise. Our weather has been really good, not too hot during the day but cooling down enough for good sleeping weather at night. The dogs have been their usual silly selves, my husband has been busy with therapy dog stuff (both with Melody and, doing stuff for the therapy dog group, without), and nothing much else has been going on.

Oh, except our pest control guy has been a regular visitor because we had (eww!) a small rat infestation in recent weeks. He appears to have gotten them all, thank heaven! And he found the two places on the roof where they were getting access to the house and those points have been permanently blocked off, so hopefully we don’t have any again. I like pet rats; it’s the wild variety I’m not fond of, especially sneaking around my house at night!

We got a fantastic offer for a deep discount cruise with our favorite cruise line, and I want to do it, but my husband, the evil person, says he’ll book the cruise — as soon as I have this year’s taxes done! He may have finally found the key to preventing my normal procrastination on the taxes. Such a dirty trick! πŸ™

My life sounds so dull compared with so many of you younger, stronger folks! But that’s okay, I like it this way, which is what matters, right?

And why isn’t my town having that chocolate wall, too? (pout!)

    • Smartypants February 11, 2017 / 5:00 pm

The cruise sounds like a fabulous incentive to sit down with the taxes! I actually enjoy preparing mine (well, the preliminaries, then they go to the accountant) but I know most folks loathe it.

Aspercreme is awesome. They have two kinds now – the original, with salicylic acid, and the new one with Lidocaine – I alternate them. I also love Tiger Balm – it has a very strong scent, but to me that’s a plus because psychologically you ‘know’ it’s working.

My life is uneventful, too – I’ve been physically unable to work for a few years, and then with PTSD unfortunately it shrank further; now I’m working with my doctor, a shrink and a physical therapist to sort of re-start from zero. Next week I’m shopping for a new (used) car – rather excited!

    • allein ? February 11, 2017 / 9:17 pm

My cousin has been dealing with mice lately. His wife has resorted to begging her Facebook friends to loan them a cat.

And if it makes you feel any better, after my car was done (which took a couple hours), I got some lunch, came home, ate, sat on my bed to read a bit, and then while watching a video on youtube I kept nodding off so I pulled up the covers and slept until almost 9:00. Such an eventful day.

      • murkle46 February 11, 2017 / 10:16 pm

        Unpleasant topic warning!
Dealing with mice is straightforawrd. You can live in your house,or the mice can.But not both. They will destroy your interior walls and eventually will burn your house down from nibbling on wire insulation and causing a short. It’s best to get them early so fewer are sent to the rainbow bridge.Unfortunately, the only thing that works is poison,D-con,not the Tomcat.Trapping only shows a problem exists, although more human than poison.Don’t use poison if there is a cat that might eat the mice.

        • fkaWaldenPond February 11, 2017 / 11:32 pm

Very valid and good advice Murkle; plus simply put, they carry disease. Mice and rats are a no go in your home.

    • Emsthemonster February 12, 2017 / 7:42 am

Sometimes I think “uneventful life” entry is illustrated with my face in a picture dictionary.
Oh well, it could be worse πŸ™‚

  11. Ilonka February 11, 2017 / 3:30 pm

Ok anybody else turn their phones around to see if the photo looks right side up from any side ?? ???
