A Puppyhood Memory

It was a warm afternoon in May, and my parents had brought me to Blarfle Stadium just so I could meet my hero: Rex Armstrong, ball dog for the Susquehanna Mossbears, league leader in foul balls chased, perhaps the best athlete alive.

I was humbled, almost terrified, to meet my idol at last. I had expected him to be mobbed with a throng of adoring fans into which I could discreetly disappear, but there he was, alone. Nervously I approached him and in a halting child’s voice poured out my heart: my admiration for his great works and how they had inspired me.

And he just stood there. Aloof, unblinking, uncaring. As if I didn’t exist. As I returned, dejected, to my parents, I learned an important lesson: Our heroes may inspire us, but they cannot know us.

“It’s such an honor to meet you!”

I’m going up to the Susquehanna this weekend, i’ll have to check out this stadium. Wonder if it’s next to the Lancaster barnstormers or the old Hershey Bears?

Oh, Mike. That story actually made me a little sad. (Maybe the gloomy weather around these parts?) Great photo.

Yes it made me a little sad too. It reminds me of this one that brakes my heart every time I see it.

Amazing – what a silly, funny, sweet doggie.

Love that playful pooch!! He deserves a live human to play with him!

The Imgur link said that the little dog couldn’t understand that the statue was a statue. From what I can tell from the photo, the dog and her people were at University of Maryland Baltimore College, home of the Retrievers. She was meeting the statue of their mascot, True Grit the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

You look taller in person. Not like your profile picture at all!

Tall, dark and very very quiet. Not the most flexible or emotive guy either.
