Those are Ginko leaves – I hope Paulina isn’t sitting among Ginko berries or she’ll be stinko and no one will hire her.

We learned in elementary school that the gingko tree sheds the majority of its leaves on one day (we even did an outdoor writing exercise on the day the leaves fell… after 40+ years it sticks with me!) And my dad had a ground level office at the foot of one of those stinky male gingkos… that also sticks with me years later!?

Pretty sure it’s the female’s that are stinky. And boy, do they stink! ?

You (Ricky’s Mom) and Murray C are correct. It’s the seeds from the female tree that smell so bad. Learn something new every day!

Let’s hear it for sexual reproduction in plants! Hip hip hooray!

Hip, hip, phooey in this case. Trust me, you do NOT want to smell female gingko seeds. They smell exactly like vomit. Exactly—no embroidery or exaggeration.

Oh, and in case anyone’s keeping score, I know there is not supposed to be an apostrophe in the plural of female. My fingers were on automatic, and I just didn’t see the error until it was too (two, to) late. 🙂

The Chinese gather the berries before they start rotting – the edible seed is inside the flesh that if not gathered soon enough rots and stinks to high heaven. We had a female tree down the street from us when I was growing up and I remember having to walk through the leaves, hoping I didn’t tread on a berry.

And! to add to all this wonderful information the Ginko biloba was around during the days of the early dinosaurs! Whenever I see one I smile inwardly, proud of it’s longevity.

I love the light when all the leaves have changed to that gorgeous yellow – some leaves on the ground, some still clinging to the tree and a bright blue autumn sky overhead. Ahhhhh.

Ahhh me too Murry, I think of them as fall butterflies– not to be confused or conflated with the really magical Monarchs that go south. One of the most special sights, moments I have seen, occurred in early fall 2013 when traveling on the go-train down to Niagara on the Lake, clouds of Monarchs billowed up, wake like as they fed on the milkweed growing along the track as we passed. That was life-changing magic.

Lovely description, FKA – I can only imagine it but I can also imagine how life-changing an experience like that would be.

Does it smell as bad as boxwood? Phew! (stinks like pee).

Did anyone else get the reference to Paulina Porizkova?

    • allein ? September 7, 2017 / 7:07 pm

Um…yes? Yes, of course! I totally got that…

    • Murray C September 7, 2017 / 8:06 pm

      I didn’t – who is that?

    • Ricky's Mom September 7, 2017 / 8:35 pm

Surely you mean Paulina Pawrizkova. And yes, that was my first thought.

This morning, before I was officially awake, I had a dream about “skunky dogs”. Not long after, when I was fully awake, I realized that there was a real skunk outside. My subconscious mind had rung the stink alarm.

Well done – a good skill to have!
