Seeing Fiona so strong and confident in the water just lifts my heart! Is it weird that I want to hug a hippo?!
No. No it is not. I want to hug her too.
Somewhere out in the ether, Walt Disney’s going
Nailed it.
HA HA HA!!!
Ballet Hippo!
??? for the dying chimp but so, so touching when she saw her special friend and ??? for the silly animal pics.
I wept buckets for the dying chimpanzee but I’m so glad her friend came to see her. She was so happy. Watching her stroke his head while he stroked hers was …..
I know. Hard to find one word that could convey it all: the tenderness between chimp and human, the anger at the cruelty too many animals suffer at the hands of lesser humans, the wanton destruction of animal habitats, the arrogance of human disregard for the wonders of this planet… it’s really all in the chimp’s smile at the sight of her loving human friend, and in your tears (and mine!). Perhaps no words could express it any better.
I’m in floods of tears over that – I can’t even watch the other videos right now. I do wonder that they didn’t euthanize her – especially in Holland! I’m glad she had that moment with her friend – unbelievably touching.
There is a woman whose name I’ve forgotten who has written books about dogs and deer and probably others and they sold a lot of copies. In the book about deer, I think, she wrote that she did not believe in euthanizing animals. I was astonished as she is really an animal lover. I emailed her through her publisher, asking why she felt that way, and she replied. Her view is more nuanced than what I’m going to say but in essence she said that we shouldn’t make those decisions for them. I can imagine that with a chimpanzee that kind of reasoning might be pretty persuasive, particularly if the animal is not in real pain.
I had similar thoughts, since she was dying of natural causes, especially – she was behaving just like a human, refusing the food offered to her, immersed in her own world, perhaps having some sense of what her process was. SO touching. Right after I saw this – crying my eyes out – I saw a friend’s FB post thatchy had had to put down one of their dogs – my favorite. So there I was in buckets of tears again. He was a foundling and the sweetest, gentlest dog. He’d had a terrible seizure because of a brain tumor, so euthanasia was the only recourse. Apparently he was so terrified during the seizure they didn’t want him to go through it again.
Part of me was like, dewd, spoon her already or just wrap your arms around her.
Even ill though, she probably had the strength to tear his arms off. Or if a hug would’ve meant the same in their body langauge . Still though, so touching when she cried out at the sight of him.
Dang onion cutting ninjas. * sniff *
Love seeing Fiona doing ballet. Even being blorpy she’s so graceful!!
Let’s see if I can get this image to post (from the Cincy Zoo’s website – Fiona’s Halloween costume) –
Fiona truly is Wonder Woman. Or Wonder Baby at this age, with her bottle! Such a cute graphic.
Thank you for the West Side Story earworm…
When I read the hover, I went over and watched the opening for a bit. 🙂
My Millie was rescued from Dead Dog Beach in PR a year ago. She was transferred to FL, Georgia, NJ, to NY, to a teeny tiny newly formed Rescue in my tiny town. She arrived and was fostered by a wonderful woman until she was 12 weeks old. I can not! imagine her surviving that journey without being emotionally damaged. But she is the happiest of puppies. I am unsure of the actual name of the organization in PR. My heart goes out to all the unknown volunteers who without knowing brought her to me.
So many great links today! I saw the chimpanzee video yesterday. So beautiful and touching. Thanks for paring that with the derpy animals Mike. It’s the perfect emotional turn around. The lion made me guffaw. NOT a dignified Gryffindor today I think. 😉
Did the Sorting Quiz (from the Orlando shelter’s website) on my cat Dmitri Purrshkavich. Came out Slytherin all three times…
Pablo came out Ravenclaw.
And for a second I read that as “Snorting Quiz”…
Anyone else automatically assume that all cats are Slytherin?
After taking the test, mine certainly is, although I’m not surprised.
Mike, you forgot hippos in your tags.
A great deal of heart breaking cute here. Love the derpy owl. Fiona is, as always, adorable.
Do they have stuffed animal Fionas?
We are all doing okay here. We realized yesterday that Gramma and Grampa’s anniversary is today, so he wanted to be with Gramma today. Our hearts are sore, but we are okay.
I will have to do the Sorting Quiz later with a few animals I knew. Am desperately curious to see where a specific air headed dog gets put.
Beautiful weather here today. I’m going to finish breakfast, thumb my nose at all the chores to be done, and go for a walk.
I got a stuffed animal Fiona when I visited her over the summer! Technically it’s just the stuffed hippo they always sold with a purple ribbon that says Fiona tied around the neck, but it’s still a Fiona =)
Gizmo is a Hufflepuff
Can’t watch the chimp video until I get home–too much crying at my desk lately! (hormones)
That sorting hat adoption thing is GENIUS. Sheer genius.
Hurray for Fiona and those hysterical animal pix. The whole office heard me laughing.
