Dolphins mug in the mirror… for science
We love to look at ourselves in the mirror. So can chimpanzees, elephants and only a few other animal species. In a three-year study, researchers watched and filmed as two dolphins hammed it up in front of a two-way mirror, and demonstrated that they develop self-awareness even earlier than humans do.

Foster seemed so pleased with himself! How lovely to see these critters cavorting and being silly in front of a mirror!
Yes! I loved the last bit where he was wiggling in front of the mirror/camera. Animals playing for no other reason than that it is fun is the best!
In my next life, I want to be a dolphin.
(No, autocorrect, I don’t want to be a rofling. Although, a rofling dolphin might be fun…)
I have already asked the genie in the bottle to turn me into a cute dolphin, as dolphins rarely need to shovel snow (Normally I like doing it, but it gets old day after day)
The genie must have misunderstood something or didn’t read the manual as I look more like a whale 🙁
Maybe you’re a DOUS?
Yes, a big and clumsy one!
Dolphins aren’t clumsy. You are a dolphin. Therefore, you are not clumsy.
And if you are a big strong dolphin, you will be able to play with us longer than if you were smaller and weaker.
I myself am a short chubby Duck. But as it once said in a “For Better Or For Worse” comic, what the gift comes wrapped in means nothing to the value of the gift. Not only that, a big heart NEEDS a big container.
This was one of the loveliest comments I have ever read. I am saving it for rainy days. <3
??
You’re cool beans Duckie. 🙂
Agreed.
Duckie, I was thinking the same thing! Loved this video so much.
I remember reading that Dolphins’ facial expressions seem static externally, there is more movement and changes to the internal layers of their faces. This is because they can use sonar to detect those subtle changes in each other.
Someone needs to make a GIF of the wiggling dolphin!
I hang out on a forum where the gender options on user profiles are male, female, and porpoise.
I identify as a porpoise.
Well my mom always says “it is important to have a porpoise in life”
Completely unrelated, but N. Fritz was talking yesterday about how to find tiny women’s shoes, and by the time I found *the* perfect website, it was probably too late for her to see it.
N. Fritz, check out the website Cinderella of Boston. They have ONLY shoes women’s sizes 2 – 5, and a wide variety at reasonable prices. It looks like they should have exactly what you need!
I now return you to your regular discussion of the adorable dolphins!
Bless you.
Holy smokes the Karina pumps are delicious. Hmmm, shipping to Canada though might be tricky.
As someone with stubby little feet, I will check this out! Oh and yes, the dolphins are lovely!
How does one get into the business of dolphin doodling? Asking for a friend. . . .
This makes me so happy!???
My Patronis is a dolphin.
Officially on Pottermore even.
🙂
