Weekend Open Thread

Happy weekend, Cutetropolitans! Our return visitor today is Teller, from reader muppet2171, who sent in this selfie. “Well, I had to hold the camera and take the picture,” confesses muppet, “because opposable thumbs and all.” This still counts as a selfie, since anything humans do for cats is basically the will of the cat and not the human.

Which is how it should be.

    That face!

  2. Smartypants May 26, 2018 / 8:22 am

So we’re all just basically selfie sticks for cats? I can live with that 😀

  3. N. Fritz May 26, 2018 / 8:24 am

Happy Weekend, Cutetropolitans! Big week behind me and a big week coming up, so I’m trying to charge my batteries by grading tests in the garden. The sun at my back, the smell of elderflower and early blooming jasmine in the air and the call of cuckoos in the distance just about makes up for all dumb things I gotta do!

    • Dubravkamcvmd May 26, 2018 / 8:43 am

      Your setting sounds idyllic

      • N. Fritz May 26, 2018 / 8:47 am

Truth be told, I’d much rather get out my art supplies and try to capture the agricultural landscape a la Grant Wood!

  4. Gigi The cat lady May 26, 2018 / 8:56 am

We came back Monday from our trip to Europe and I’m still exhausted 😀
Tha cats made a mess of the house as expected but at least everyone is fine, except Mia won’t leave my side and Bindi will meow loudly at interval until one of us calls her and then she comes running to make sure we are there, the other 3 are already back to normal.
Here are a couple of photos, the first is in Bern Switzerland and the second form Pisa Italy

    • N. Fritz May 26, 2018 / 9:04 am

Great pics, Gigi! Thanks for sharing!

    • AJ May 26, 2018 / 9:10 am

Welcome back Gigi! Looks like you had a wonderful trip.

    • debg May 26, 2018 / 10:49 am

It’s good to have you back, Gigi! We missed you!

And the cats’ behavior sounds perfectly normal to me. They missed you so much.

    • dubravkamcvmd May 26, 2018 / 10:54 am

Welcome back and thanks for the pictures.

    • fkaWaldenPond May 26, 2018 / 6:29 pm

What time of day was that photo taken in Bern Gigi? The street appears magically empty!

      • Gigi The cat lady May 27, 2018 / 2:11 pm

It was a Sunday morning around 9h30, it got more busy as the morning wore on.

    • Phred’s Mom May 27, 2018 / 6:12 am

Glad you had a good trip and the kitties are happy to see you back.

  5. AJ May 26, 2018 / 9:33 am

Yes that face! I just want to smoosh it and kiss it but I’m worried about the pointy bits objecting.

N.fritz, your garden sounds wonderful. Even though my painting skills are almost nil, I’d be very tempted too to try and capture the scene.

Got a busy but at the same time relaxing and fun 3 day weekend planned. Farmers market plus haircut today, dogs groomed tomorrow and sometime these 2 days, go to our Safari Park. They’ve opened an Australia exhibit with Roos, and wombats, and that weird bird with the pointy claws and etc. And they’ll even let you walk through the kangaroo and wallaby exhibit so they might come up to you! Closest I’ll get to the place for now. Monday will go to Seaworld since they letting military and veterans in for free. Haven’t been in several years so it’ll be fun to see what’s new.

For those who served in any military, thank you for your service. And have a good weekend too!

  6. debg May 26, 2018 / 10:51 am

Happy Saturday, all! And thanks to those who have served in the military.

I just had some plumbing work done (finally! it’s been needed for 3 years) and can now take a shower with a working shower diverter. This will be necessary after I clean up my basement bathroom, which has had unpleasant overflow problems. Putting on my hazmat gear and diving in today! Wish me luck!

    Happy weekend, everyone.
BIL came home to be with his family yesterday. A home care nurse will be coming by to give required care, but he will stay with his family, at home, until the end. This somehow has made a big difference in everyone’s tension levels, even though nothing has really changed. But this will be easier for him, and more private. And now the rest of the family will be able to spend calmer time with him.
I’m trying to force myself to relax. I’m listening to the sounds of a dove outside as I drink my tea. Humming birds have started to check out the feeder I have. My peas have reached the point where they are starting to need the support strings. And my cucumbers and carrots are growing like weeds.
We had an hysterical situation earlier this week. Not many would laugh, but I could see the funny. Someone in our building tried to ‘race’ the garage door, to get in before it closed. This person failed dramatically, and the vibrations of door meeting car set off the garage sprinkler system. This set off the building fire alarm, and we all evacuated. So there we all are, standing around at the edge of our property, watching the water cascade over the bent garage door. Some of them had even brought out their supper plates, and were eating while the fire department showed up. And the biggest complaint that most people had was that their cars hadn’t been under the water spray and didn’t get a free wash!
Two weeks till we go to Prince George, and boy, do we need the break! We’re going to do some thinking and evaluating while we’re away, and maybe make some decisions about moving, jobs, and getting some cats.
    Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

    • Phred’s Mom May 26, 2018 / 12:44 pm

i am sure this will be the best for your BIL. No place like home.
Give him gentle hugs from me, please.

    • allein ? May 26, 2018 / 12:46 pm

I’m glad he can be home with his family. Not the same situation, but that’s what my aunt did in March and I think it was easier on everyone, plus she got to be in her own bed. And drink scotch. 😉

    • debg May 26, 2018 / 1:03 pm

Duckie, as always your ability to meet challenging situations with aplomb impresses and inspires me. It sounds like your BIL and the whole family will be more comfortable with this new arrangement. Hugs to you all.

    • Faye May 26, 2018 / 1:13 pm

Thinking of you and your whole family. Hopefully your BIL will find the family setting more peaceful.

Plans for your future sound exciting. It sounds like you and hubby are ready to make some big decisions.

      Teller is stunning.

Drawing in progress with X-Files marathon on. It is hot! I cannot stand the decibel level of my AC. So just ordered a three speed Vornado fan. Should be fine unless total heatwave. Then AC is tolerable.

Feeling thankful and happy. Good holiday to those celebrating and thank any who served for their stepping up for all of us.

    • Amyliz May 26, 2018 / 2:13 pm

My mom received hospice home care the last few weeks of her life; it was a blessing that she could be home instead of in a hospital. I hope your BIL can be kept as comfortable and peaceful as possible.

  8. Amyliz May 26, 2018 / 12:12 pm

Usually I dislike selfies but I will definitely make an exception in the case of Teller!

My sister should be arriving from Minnesota in an hour or two to spend the weekend with me. I have a few activities in mind; catch a movie, go a to paint-your-own ceramics place, go out for brunch, hike the trails in a nice, cool, wooded park (hot here). I just want her to relax and enjoy herself because she has been going through some major difficulties with her teenage son in the past year.

Hope all of you have a great weekend!

  9. Phred’s Mom May 26, 2018 / 12:47 pm

Other half just gifted me with an echo dot/alexa. I thinks it is a gift for him, not me.
I don’t care one way or another. I am not a child of technology. A lot of pain today
don’t know why! but it is most annoying. Cant even sleep. Hope tomorrow is better.

    • Faye May 26, 2018 / 1:18 pm

Sorry you are in pain Phred’s Mom.

I have an Alexa Echo and Dot. Have not installed Dot yet. Am enjoying the Alexa so far. Best feature for me is her playing ambient sounds to help me sleep. Ocean, forest, wind in trees…

      • debg May 26, 2018 / 2:27 pm

I’ve got an Echo in my bedroom, Dot in the basement, Show in the kitchen (so I can watch videos while I cook), and Spot in the study. The shopping list feature saves me endless frustration on a daily basis–I can add stuff to the list from any room in the house, and the list syncs to my phone. No more arriving at the store without my list!

    • fkaWaldenPond May 26, 2018 / 6:25 pm

Sending you ‘be-gone! pain’ thoughts! Phred’s Mom.

  10. allein ? May 26, 2018 / 12:50 pm

Happy Saturday. Waiting to hear from my friend and hopefully get together, maybe tomorrow. Will have dinner at my parents’ on Monday. I’ve been off the past two days and done nothing productive, which is annoying. I was going to test drive cars but didn’t get around to it. Don’t really want to go to a dealer on Memorial Day weekend. But I’m off for a week toward the end of June so I will have to figure it all out by then. I also have to proofread my dad’s Navy reunion association newsletter this weekend.

Stripes went to the vet on Thursday; his cancer is already back. He got more medicine but my mom said he might only have a few more months. ?

After they got home, he found a new place to sleep. I say he can sleep wherever he likes.

    • Duckie ? May 26, 2018 / 12:54 pm

I see no problem with this sleeping spot.

      • allein ? May 26, 2018 / 12:58 pm

It’s funny cuz he’ll get up there sometimes when there’s something interesting to play with but he doesn’t usually sleep there.

      • debg May 26, 2018 / 2:25 pm

I’m with Duckie. Sorry that the news isn’t better. Spoil Stripes like it’s your job.

        • fkaWaldenPond May 26, 2018 / 6:22 pm

          Well, that truly sucks. *sigh*

      • Phred’s Mom May 27, 2018 / 6:13 am

        none at all.

    • N. Fritz May 26, 2018 / 1:03 pm

So sorry to hear Stripes’ prognosis. My Cassie-dog’s cancer came back only weeks after she went into remission. HUGS to Duckie, Allein, phred’s Mom, DebG, amyliz’s sister and everyone dealing with sadness/unpleasantness

    • dubravkamcvmd May 26, 2018 / 1:03 pm

I’m so sorry. Poor little munchkin. Poor all of you. Get in all the cuddling you can.

    • Faye May 26, 2018 / 1:20 pm

Awww. Remember they do not worry like we do. Good kitty.

      • Phred’s Mom May 27, 2018 / 6:16 am

We assume they don’t worry. How can we know? I believe they
are more aware than we can fathom. Untill we make a breakthrough
in communication, just give him all the love and comfort you can. He
        will know whereof you speak.

    • Amyliz May 26, 2018 / 2:06 pm

So sorry to hear about this, Allein. I say spoil Stripes more than ever.

    • Sowmya May 26, 2018 / 4:30 pm

Purrs and hugs to you and Stripes. Cancer sucks. All of it.

      • Phred’s Mom May 27, 2018 / 6:17 am

        Ain’t that the truth.

  11. Sowmya May 26, 2018 / 3:50 pm

Hi all in Cute-World. It’s a warm, sunny day in Winnipeg! Dmitri Purrshkavich had an unexpected surgery last week, excision of a rapidly growing lump on his flank. He’s healing and out of his Cone – evidently still trying to decide if he wants to forgive us…

Turns out to be an extremely rare hemangiosarcoma – vet says she hasn’t come across one in cats in the last 6 years! Can be an aggressive cancer – treatment options to be discussed – but at least Dmitri’s home and getting back to himself. I will pet him, and spoil him, and cross my fingers and hope. Sigh.

    • Faye May 27, 2018 / 9:22 am

      Awwww.

  12. AJ May 26, 2018 / 4:32 pm

Sending hugs to everyone going through rough times with themselves or family members or pets. I know how hard it is seeing family members or pets ill but just hug them close, love them and remember the good times, sometimes that’s all that can be done.

  13. Murray C. May 26, 2018 / 5:18 pm

Oh, my goodness, so many things going on! I’m just getting to my emails and it’s 5PM – cut down a fig tree today (it’s sprouting from the ground but all the branches were dead – it was about 12′ high) and I’m POOPED! Getting all my pots ready to get some annuals to make the place colorful. Other things like hydrangeas, of which I have many varieties, are getting ready to bloom. N. Fritz, I may take your idea and try to paint sometime this week end if I can get past all the stuff I have to get done.

I’m sorry to hear about all the woes! Dear BIL, Dear Kitties, life is very trying at times! Phred’s Mom, I hope your pain eases, Duckie, I hope all your issues get sorted out – and by all means, get cats!

I think it may be wise to take all the warnings about Alexa and similar devices to heart – they say it’s like having a microphone in your house. tho’ why anyone would want to hear all the mundanities of anyone’s life is beyond me.

And, yes, to all the Vets living and dead who have fought to preserve our freedoms – we need to hold onto them for dear life.

They can’t be serious, can they?

      • murkle46 May 27, 2018 / 9:07 am

Hilarious,is’nt it?I’m surprised Parks and Recreation missed this one.
