By examining the faint but telltale paw prints leading to and from the bowls on the ground, coupled with the stray particles of dog food scattered around them, I deduce that someone was using these bowls to feed the infamous hounds of the Baskervilles. In other words, their purpose was alimentary, my dear Watson.
