Thanks to the famous Fiona, hippos are hip right now. It seems everyone’s in love with these adorable four-legged steamrollers as they rocket through the water (and sprint surprisingly fast on land, too). And since today is World Hippo Day, let’s check in with that other famous hippo, Penelope the Pygmy Hippo at the Toronto Zoo. (via Lois M. And here are some more facts about hippos.)
Oh Penelope is adorable! And she LOVES her Mom!
Love her playing hide n seek underneath that leaf. Too cute!!
I STILL want a house hippo.
Thanks, Mike, for posting this so fast. I didn’t know it was National Hippo Day until I got the Toronto newsletter and saw it. So I quickly sent it to Cutetropolis and Mike acted quickly also. I bet if Fiona and Penelope were to get together those 2 little girls would have so much fun frolicking with each other. Wouldn’t that be something to see??? I can dream.
According to my calendar, it is also Gumdrop Day. Penelope just needs a coating of sugar and she’s good to go.
Her Mom obviously loves Penelope, too. I do love her shaking that leaf stem around – the girl has a sense of humor.
10 pounds of cute in a 5 pound back. I had to rewind several times so I could rewatch the Savage Leaf Stem Attack!
I love flippy hippo ears!
I love baby hippo faces. They look so innocent and so mischievous at the same time. It could be the ears.
I know!!! Those little floppy hippo ears get me every time! And I love “the sassing of the leaf”.?
Penelope is so sassy with that leaf! And so shiny—even when adorably covered in hay. I think World Hippo Day will be second favorite holiday from now on (after International Talk Like a Pirate Day).
Happy World Hippo Day, everyone!
All the endangered pygmy hippos can come live at my house. I will keep them safe.
Penelope is such a character.
I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas (and Easter, and St. Patrick’s Day, and 4th of July, and …). This is a lethal dose of cuteness. I don’t even know what was my favorite part – covered with hay, shaking a leaf, climbing over mom. It’s like a top 10 list of cute hippo moves all in the same video.
Did you know there’s a song “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas”? Its from the 50s or early 60s. I’m sure you can find it on line.

Hopefully this will take you there!
That song has had quite a resurgence in recent years. I learned it as a kid and had occasion to sing it as an adult. It played a large part in my husband falling in love with me!
I think we need to hear that story, Murray C.! Enguiring minds want to know.?
What a precious little blorp! One can never have too many hippos.
