Weekend Open Thread

Happy Caturday, Cutetropolitans! We have a new visitor today, courtesy of reader Ems the Monster, and he’s ready for his fifteen minutes of Internet fame:

“My white kitty, Felix is constantly nagging me to get him featured on Cutetropolis. He would like to be a Weekend Open Cat one day because he wants to brag about it to the cats of the neighbourhood. You can see how proudly he was posing in the litter box when he was 5 weeks old. He is very good at loud purring, soft headbutts and climbing trees.”

Hello, down there!

Felix is a handsome and multitalented fellow and I am glad to make his acquaintance!
    Have a great weekend, everyone!’

  2. N. Fritz March 30, 2019 / 8:17 am

Felix looks like he’s got tons of personality and I love the name Felix (the Cat… anyone else old enough to understand the reference?).

I am treating myself to a weekend at my favorite bed and breakfast, in a spa town renowned for its clean air and mountain springs. It is a beautiful day here in Austria and I am getting ready to meet a friend and her majestic Alaskan Malamute, Juneau.

Do we really have to do Monday this week? I kind of like where I’m at!

    • phredsmom March 30, 2019 / 9:15 am

Tell us more about the town and your b&b, N.Fritz, they sound
      wonderful.

    • phredsmom March 30, 2019 / 9:18 am

Also, I remember that Felix the Cat!

    • Suzanne March 30, 2019 / 9:49 am

Oh yes, I also remember Felix the Cat . . . And also Felix Unger, the finicky half of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple. . . And Felix Mendelssohn, one of my favorite composers. That’s pretty much my list of Famous Felixes. . . THIS Felix is a sweetie!!

    • debg March 30, 2019 / 10:41 am

      I remember Felix the Cat!

I once had a kitty named Felix Felicis. She was a dilute calico with an especially quirky personality. Sadly, she died very young.

Your weekend sounds heavenly. Enjoy it to the max.

      • Dulcie March 30, 2019 / 4:14 pm

I thought you were going to recite a limerick ha ha! “There once was a kitty named Felix…” 😁

    • N. Fritz March 30, 2019 / 3:29 pm

Phred’s Mom, the first time I visited Austria in 1986, I lived in this little village halfway up a mountain for four weeks. Since then I have become good friends with the woman who runs the B&B. Picturesque is an understatement. Flowers everywhere. A cable car to the top of the mountain (4740 feet). Walking trails through the forests, including a meditation path and a path with a dozen mountain springs that you can actually drink from. It is also the hanggliding center of Austria and there were 25 paragliders in the air at once today. My friend with the Malamute and I had a most excellent walk and finished it off with a fabulous dinner at a trendy new restaurant.

      • phredsmom March 31, 2019 / 1:19 pm

Sounds idyllic. I hope my body heals to the point where I can
visit Austria again. My only visit was a quick daytrip from Italy
to Innsbruck, which we didn’t particularly care for, and I am sure
Innsbruck is not representative of the country. MyMike says it
looked like a Dodge City. We were disappointed. Tell us more,
town name, bitte, and we can do our homework for details.

  3. birdcage March 30, 2019 / 8:21 am

Oh my!!!! I do love a white kitty!!!!! Felix is beautiful. I love cats – they make me sneeze so I can’t have one in the house but I find them fascinating. Hope everyone is doing OK today. It’s raining and cold here in Southern Ontario which is likely Winter’s Last Stand before the true arrival of Spring temperatures and better weather. For anyone curious, I’m continuing to recover from my surgery and managing OK around the house. Reminder: tonight at 8:30 pm (your local time) is Earth Hour. Switch off for an hour as a symbolic gesture to stand up against climate change! Climate change is more than just rising global temperatures: it’s also destruction of habitats and extinction of animals, diminishing natural resources and unusual, dangerous weather patterns. It’s real and it affects us all. In my family, we get together, light some candles and try to play dominos in the dark for an hour. It’s also a time to renew our “green efforts” for the coming year: reducing, re-using, recycling, composting. Cold water wash cycles. LED light bulbs: whatever you can do!!!!! Please participate or think about some things you could change to help the planet going forward.

    • debg March 30, 2019 / 10:42 am

Birdcage, this is a great idea. I’ll definitely renew green efforts, even if I can’t bear to unplug for even an hour.

    • phredsmom March 31, 2019 / 1:37 pm

I have been living green for decades, before it was trendy, and yes, trendy is
the right word these days. I’ve been living green because I am frugal, and
laundering with cold water works. For the same reason I hang laundry
outdoors, always have. Nothing is nicer than air-dried pillowcases. We shut
off the wi-fi every night, saves power and cuts back on the radiation output.
I could go on, but I don’t want to be accused of virtue signalling. We should
try to minimize electricity usage ALL the time, where possible, not just for a
set period.Granted, I don ‘t hang my laundry out in the winter, it would freeze.
When I wash my woolies I will, though, freezing will kill any critters that like to
munch on cashmere and Shetland wool. There! Ah has spoken.

    • phredsmom March 31, 2019 / 2:07 pm

Keep up the good work healing after your surgery.
Sometimes it’s frustrating when one can’t do all
one wants to do after surgery, but healing takes
its own time. We’re thinking of you and sending
      healing thoughts to you.

  4. Nancy March 30, 2019 / 8:32 am

Welcome to the gang, Felix! And yes, I too do remember Felix The Cat! Rainy & gloomy here but at least it’s my Saturday off so that’s all that matters. Might just work on my reading today….

  5. Alice Shortcake March 30, 2019 / 9:10 am

Felix is adorable, even in his litterbox!

Since Christmas I’ve been taking a break from my literary activities, but next week I’ll be immersing myself in the Victorian theatrical paper ‘The Era’ once more to complete the last book in the series, a compilation of pantomime reviews.

Oh, and I’m looking forward to seeing Mozart’s ‘Idomeneo’ at my local theatre tonight. The weather here is quite spring-like, albeit a bit breezy, so it should be a pleasant walk into town and back.

    • dubravkamcvmd March 30, 2019 / 11:41 am

OK – pantomime reviews??? There were enough pantomime productions, which generated reviews, such that you can compile a book of reviews??? I understand theater is a big thing in England, and has been, but wha?????

      • Alice Shortcake March 30, 2019 / 12:14 pm

The book will cover the years 1830-1910 (or thereabouts) and there were dozens of theatres in London alone – believe me, I’m not short of material! And the reviews are very detailed, so much so that I’ve had to do some pruning to keep the book of manageable size. I’ll post a few choice snippets in future.

    • Duckie 🐥 March 30, 2019 / 12:09 pm

Alice, once you have completed the final book, I will be adding the entire series to my Amazon wish list for Christmas. I’m looking forward to it, even if I have to buy them myself.

      • Alice Shortcake March 30, 2019 / 2:06 pm

        Oooh, a potential customer!

*jumps up and down a bit*

        • Smartypants March 30, 2019 / 4:14 pm

          Looking forward to it!

        • phredsmom March 31, 2019 / 1:59 pm

I could feel the joyous impact all the
way over here, Alice. We look forward.

    • phredsmom March 31, 2019 / 1:57 pm

How lucky you are, Alice, to be able to walk into town and to see Idomeneo there.
Tell us about it tomorrow, please.

  6. phredsmom March 30, 2019 / 9:24 am

Pretty Spring day here in Bucks County, PA. Crocus and
narcissus are smiling in my garden. Bucks County has
planted thousands of daffodils at intersections in the county
and the effect engenders good feelings in everyone who
sees them. Pretty spectacular. I wish they lasted longer.

    • allein 🐾 March 30, 2019 / 8:10 pm

I used to live in Bucks County!

      • phredsmom March 31, 2019 / 2:01 pm

You’re not terribly far from Bucks, are you?

        • allein 🐾 March 31, 2019 / 2:24 pm

It was an hour drive from my parents’ house to my apartment in Levittown.

  7. AJ March 30, 2019 / 9:33 am

Welcome Felix and how handsome you are! Everybody sounds like they got wonderful plans for the weekend whether indoors or out. That spa town and weekend with a friend and doggo sounds perfect N. Fritz. And yeah to Birdcage for your recovery from surgery. Can’t wait to read excerpts from your new book Alice, they’re always pretty funny.

Spring doesn’t quite know what to do here in SoCal, yesterday it was back in the upper 40s first thing in the morning but tomorrow is supposed to hit the 80s during the day. Just make up your mind already!! Lucky me has a three day weekend, CA celebrates Cesar Chavez Day so all state institutions are closed, then it’s Spring Break at the university so whoppee! no students around for a week. Other than that, haircut and hockey today. Then breakfast with a friend tomorrow.

Almost forgot, my new roof is complete!!! Now all that’s left is to do the water/mold remediation inside and replace some damaged ceiling.I’ll have to remind the property manager to have someone look at the A/C unit and reseed the back yard.

Happy weekend everyone and hope no one plays too many tricks on you on Monday.

  8. debg March 30, 2019 / 9:43 am

Welcome, Felix! I’m glad your mom finally listened to you and sent in some photos. You’re handsome and dynamic.

Good to hear everybody’s updates. Birdcage, hope your recovery continues apace. Everybody seems to have great plans for the weekend. I’m taking a break from the bathroom renovation to go to Yarn Fest, a weekend-long event for knitters, crocheters, weavers, and spinners hosted by my former employer. This afternoon, I’ve got a workshop on color in spinning. I already did my shopping yesterday after work and overspent my budget, but it’s worth it for such beautiful yarn and fiber. I’ve been in a knitting rut and the new stuff has rekindled my creative fires. Plus I’m on a spinning kick, so my fiber supply has run low.

Colorado can’t decide about its weather either. Highs near 60 most of the week, then yesterday went back to the 40s. We had snow flurries last night and there’s some white stuff still on the ground (though not for long). If we had random acts of daffodil here, the poor flowers wouldn’t know whether to bloom or not!

Looking forward to Mike’s April Fools posts on Monday. Be well, everyone.

  9. Murray March 30, 2019 / 9:59 am

Gorgeous cat is Felix and I, too, remember Felix the Cat. Best wishes to all in recovery mode, those feeling down, anyone who needs a boost. I’m off to a day long of music at a friend’s on the Delaware Bay. Temps are to be in the mid 70’s but just for today, then a return to unseasonable cold for the week, lots of rain. Drat, I need to get out in the garden!

  10. Tara O'Brien March 30, 2019 / 10:35 am

Hello Felix! Aren’t you handsome. I would be glad to see anytime on Caturday.

Going to the nursery with the neighbor in a few minutes. To get ready for the spring time gardening.

Did any one else have to google the kakapo from yesterday and come across the hysterical, um, shagging video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T1vfsHYiKY Put down the drinks…

    • debg March 30, 2019 / 10:45 am

OMG you were so right about not drinking while watching. That was fantastic.

    • dubravkamcvmd March 30, 2019 / 11:48 am

Wow! Hilarious! All I can say is I certainly hope there will always be an England! I love Stephen Fry.

    • Emsthemonster March 31, 2019 / 10:57 am

I cannot remember when I laughed so hard for the last time. Thanks for the link, Tara!
The youtube comments are also worth reading.
The beautiful pronunciation in the video was the cherry on the top.

    • dubravkamcvmd March 31, 2019 / 7:26 pm

I showed this video to two friends. Both of them reacted negatively because of the neck cuts/scratching, and that was their entire reaction! I am flabbergasted.

  11. Murray March 30, 2019 / 11:04 am

The Parrot’s FACE! And the GUY’s face! How hysterically funny

    • Alice Shortcake March 31, 2019 / 6:49 pm

What I wouldn’t give for a sequel in which man and parrot share a post-coital cigarette amongst the ferns…

      • Murray March 31, 2019 / 9:17 pm

Oooo, things have gotten better – I can access the site! so far

But on your theme, Alice, you may remember the fellow, Barry Humphries? whose most famous character was Dame Edna – he also played a character, an Australian “minister of culture”. He was on the Johnny Carson show in the 1980’s in this guise, talking about attending Chuck and Di’s Royal Wedding – and was planning on giving them a sample of Australian cheese as a wedding gift because he loved to imagine Charles
“reaching over for a moist handful of of post coital Gorgonzola”.

  12. Duckie 🐥 March 30, 2019 / 12:05 pm

Tara, I have never seen such a happy bird! That was hysterical. Thank you for the link.
I’m having a quiet day today. Just planning for what I’m going to do next week, project wise.
    Health is poor but stable.
Hubby’s job situation could resolve itself next week.
Seeds I planted earlier this week are sprouting.
I’m going to try starting something I read about years ago. It’s called “the 23 skidoo”. Once a day for a week, I am to select a room and go through it, picking out 23 things that if have not used in the past year, and physically get rid of them, either by garbage or donation. I am not allowed to think of what I might be able to do with them myself. They have to physically leave my life. I’m not limited to just 23 items per room. But that is the minimum. And a pair of socks only counts as one item.
Birdcage, I’m glad to hear you are progressing. Others have said this, but it’s true: take your time. I’m one of those people who will try to rush recovery, and suffer a relapse.
Have a great upcoming week, everyone.

    • N. Fritz March 30, 2019 / 3:07 pm

That sounds like a great system for getting rid of clutter, Duckie. Hours before I read your message I had written down “get rid of stuff” on my to do list. GMTA!

Hello everyone, weather here in southern Québec is dreadful, gray and rainy and cold.
My mother in law is still in the hospital, they will transfer her to a convalescent home as soon as there is a place, she needs to heal and then learn how to walk on a foot with 2 less toes.

Next week is my husband first week of semi-retirement, he will work only 3 days, I guess I’ll have to adjust to having him in there house more LOL!

I’m glad everyone seems to be having a good weekend but I think N. Fritz has us all beat! LOL!

  14. Emsthemonster March 30, 2019 / 12:36 pm

Felix and I would like to thank all of you for the kind words.
I am so happy he got his 15 mins 🙂 Thanks, Mike for making it happen.
The weather is pleasant here for spring lovers, I secretly mourn my beloved winter. It is 20C here already 🙁 The good news is I bought a new bicycle today, I am so looking forward to starting to ride and get in a good shape again.
I hope everyone has a good weekend!

  15. Jan B. March 30, 2019 / 2:01 pm

    I 💖 Felix! 💕💗💓

Knee not doing very well, I hope I can survive the next six weeks until surgery. But the weather here has been glorious! Crocus are done, but daffodils are going good, also the late hellebores, the early rhodies, forget-me-nots, forsythia, primroses, and pansies. Buds on the Camilla are swelling, with tulips not far behind. Most of the trees are starting to leaf out as well. I LOVE spring!

OMG – the flowers are beautiful but Lily!!! I see now where the expression sex kitten may have come from. The sexiest one is 20.02.24 where she is lying in the crumpled fur throw, her front paws flung carelessly, looking come hither. I downloaded that one.

        • Emsthemonster March 31, 2019 / 10:54 am

The pic in which Lily is holding your finger is so cute – that’s my favourite!

        • Murray March 31, 2019 / 11:39 am

I’m having an awful time trying to post things. I just wrote something fairly long and got partway through adding my info and it suddenly gave me a Safari error screen so I had to clear my history – which I’m having to do every day – and when I got back my post was gone. It’s extremely frustrating. Is anyone else having these issues or is it just me? I don’t feel inspired to post very often because of it (not that I’m such a sparkling addition, mind you!😉) but it is fun to be part of the conversation.

          • dubravkamcvmd March 31, 2019 / 11:50 am

Oh no! I’m not having that problem and I’m on Safari. Don’t give up Murray. You’re important here.

          • Not That Mike The Other Mike March 31, 2019 / 11:55 am

What did the error message say? How long has this been happening — does it coincide with any change I made to the site?

  18. allein 🐾 March 30, 2019 / 8:04 pm

    Hi everyone! Felix is adorable!

Just got home. Went to my cousin’s daughter’s baby shower, then on the way home we were passing the senior living place where my uncle lives so we stopped to visit. Then I dropped my mom off at home and went to see if I could use my Kohls coupon that expires tomorrow. On the way there I was smelling smoke and the air was kinda hazy (but I didn’t smell it at my parents’ house); after I was done shopping (got a sweater and a pair of jeans to replace the pair that will very soon not be fit for wearing out of the house) I could still smell it. I texted my dad while I was waiting at Starbucks but he didn’t know what was happening. The shortly after I was heading back south the smell disappeared (maybe the wind shifted?). Did a little googling and apparently there is a forest fire in the Pine Barrens, which is two counties south of me, but there’s a short video with the article with a caption that says the smoke is blowing north and is visible as far as my county. Apparently there is no danger to private property, so that’s good, at least. I’ll admit it smelled good…like a giant fireplace.

Also, it was a beautiful day today.

    • AJ March 31, 2019 / 8:35 am

Allein – where in NJ do you live? I might have mentioned before but I grew up outside Newark.

      • allein 🐾 March 31, 2019 / 10:16 am

        I’m in Monmouth County.

    • allein 🐾 March 31, 2019 / 11:08 am

Ooh, I got so distracted by the smoke mystery I forgot to mention that at my uncle’s place they have a “house dog”! She’s a black Lab named Mellow and she just kinda hangs out and roams wherever. She was outside when we got there and came in with us (I guess she can’t open the door, though there is a button, presumably because some residents are in wheelchairs or otherwise have trouble getting around, so she could probably learn). Her muzzle is white so she’s obviously older. They are also allowed to have pets; my uncle’s neighbor was outside with his dog, an older, white-with-brown-patches mini-Doxie (didn’t get his name).

Today is not so nice; it’s raining and in the low 60’s, but I like rain so that’s okay.
