Well, that looks comfy…love the stripey tail!

Happy Caturday! Taking my car for a checkup this morning, got to see Gracie the Havanese yesterday (my parents are watching her while my cousin is off to meet her new grandson!), going to see my friend tomorrow for book shopping (I hope; we were supposed to do it last weekend but she was sick). New guy at work started this week, finally. Oh, and last night I went with my mom to bring dinner to my uncle and there was a bunny in his front yard. She (I’m guessing) was near what appeared to be a nest covered with a mat of grass and fur. I approached slowly and she ran to the edge of the yard, and then when we were leaving she was back in the same spot. I walked toward her again, and again she ran to the edge of the yard but stayed there, like she was waiting. Didn’t want to disturb her nest but I suspect there were babies under there. I don’t know why she’d put it right in the middle of the yard, out in the open…

Have a good weekend, everyone! Here’s a sassy bebeh g’raffe!

Mike, the giraffe video is “unavailable”, etc. to me.

      • allein 🐾 June 8, 2019 / 7:16 pm

It’s unavailable to me, now, too, and I posted it. I’ll see if I can find it somewhere else.

  2. Lucy's Mom June 8, 2019 / 9:05 am

Hey, if I was even half as adorable as that giraffe I’d be pretty sassy too. 💕

  3. AJ June 8, 2019 / 9:29 am

Sassy AND derpy, what a combo on the bebe giraffe. And love how kitty is lounging, so pretty with that stripey tail. We might finally get some warm temps here, the SoCal June gloom is in full force and it’s been grey, cool, and somewhat windy. Tomorrow might be the first day it breaks 80 degrees.

Lots going on over here this weekend. First up is our annual neighborhood block party this afternoon. Hubby’s entered both the chili cook-off and dessert contest. Chili’s been aging since Thursday night and he’ll make the baklava this morning. Tomorrow is off to the boat show to drool over all the boats and dream of which one he’s going to buy when he finally a) hits the lottery, or b) the VA admits they screwed up his claim 20 years ago and cut him a check with 7 figures on it, then he retires. Personally, I don’t see either happening but I just go and basically be a yes woman with a few interjections of reality. Plus somewhere in there need to find time to do the usual chores – cleaning. laundry, groceries, etc.

I’m in countdown mode to our cruise next month and slowly gathering everything I might possibly need. Latest thing to plan is what small crafty projects can I take to occupy my time. I’m a pretty early riser (like 5-5:30 every day, including weekends) and with no internet access, I need to find something else to do besides twiddle my thumbs. Sooo, I’ve dusted off my trusty knitting loom machine and I’ll start working on something called Izzy or comfort dolls plus some squares for an afghan. Izzy/comfort dolls look pretty easy to make (I think), basically you knit a tube, using different color yarn to differentiate shoes, pants, top, etc and after stuffing, you sew in a few strategic spots and it looks like someone standing with their hands in their pocket. My ambition is to make a Nativity scene. Hope I’m not biting off more than I can chew so wish me luck.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

Hamster is a gorgeous kitty! And I love the bleppy baby giraffe. Got to feed some giraffes once–all named after Greek goddesses–and they were the sweetest, gentlest giants imaginable. With purple tongues.

Allein, please keep us posted on baby bunnehs. AJ, your craft plans sound very manageable.

I’m spending the day turning a potential storage space into an actual one: there’s a small room/giant closet next to my laundry room (about 4 feet wide by 10 feet long) that currently serves as a cat bathroom. Above the litter boxes, there’s a lot of blank wall space that can hold shelves. Conveniently enough, after I upgraded my clothing closets, I had several shelves left over! I can install today and start moving stuff up there, then add more components when I see what I need.

This is all part of a big push to *finally* move tools and home improvement supplies out of the living room and my bedroom, now that the bathroom is done. Then I can clean up my basement studio areas so I can use them again. Ultimately, I’ll move my office down into the basement too, to spend more time with the two basement cats. Scorpius will never turn in his feral card if he doesn’t get some hoomin attention, and Fred has been lonely ever since he and Scorpius stopped being besties.

Good boy, Hamster! Lily agrees with you warm spots, she even sleeps on the heat register if I’ve turned the furnace up!

Ccol and rainy here in the PNW, which makes icing my knee difficult because then I freeze to death, but it’s making everything extra lush and green. For those still in need of a little color, here’s one of my roses during a sun break the other day. It’s a David Austin English rose called “Gertrude Jekyll” and is the single most fragrant rose that I have ever encountered!

And gorgeous! I’ll have to recommend it to my sister – she’s a serious gardener.

    • debg June 8, 2019 / 12:46 pm

I passionately adore David Austin roses, especially the Old English ones. You’ve chosen a beauty! I’ll have to order some for my garden.

Here’s a full open one from a few years ago…

      Really is my favorite rose!

  6. Alice Shortcake June 8, 2019 / 11:18 am

More medical drama at the Shortcakery – my father was discharged from hospital last Tuesday and re-admitted the following day because he was too weak for me to lift him out of his armchair, and in any case his right foot was too swollen and painful for him to put any weight on it. Oh, and urine retention meant that he had to be catheterized (again). Thank goodness the hospital is only ten minutes’ walk from our house so I can visit him every afternoon! I’ve been taking advantage of having the house to myself by painting the upstairs bedrooms, so I’m sitting here liberally splattered with duck egg blue and mauve paint…

    • dubravkamcvmd June 8, 2019 / 12:28 pm

I’m sorry about your father. And am very impressed by your energy – the colors sound beautiful.

    • debg June 8, 2019 / 12:46 pm

So sorry, Alice. Sending good thoughts your way.

    • AJ June 8, 2019 / 1:47 pm

Sorry to hear your dad isn’t feeling well but at least you’re able to go see him often. And the bedroom colors sound mah-va-lous!!! Happy projects!

      • phredsmom June 8, 2019 / 7:12 pm

So sorry about your dad’s problems.

    • phredsmom June 8, 2019 / 7:08 pm

Today I actually cleaned the upstairs bathroom. Did the job in fits and starts,
stopping to recover when the back began to hurt, then starting in again. I am
proud of myself. My goodest news is – I was awarded a grant to pay for my
cancer meds, which I will be taking forever, since it is inoperable.

      • debg June 8, 2019 / 7:44 pm

That’s terrific news about your grant!

      • dubravkamcvmd June 8, 2019 / 10:04 pm

Woohoo!! Great news about the grant! What a relief!

        • Dulcie June 8, 2019 / 11:45 pm

Very good news about the grant. This, at least, goes a little way towards making your situation better. xxoo

Though I’d much rather be imitating Hamster, I have a lot to do today. More yard work (always), grocery shopping, and editing photos of the concert I attended last night among other things.

    Happy weekend everyone!

  8. N. Fritz June 8, 2019 / 2:01 pm

Hamster really is a stunning kitty!

Having lots of ups and downs these days. yesterday I ended up having an “I hate my life” meltdown. I’m doing better today but this has prompted my boyfriend to consider calling off our garden party next weekend. Frankly, I’d be relieved, but I would also feel very guilty for being the cause. He wants what’s best for me.

Today I tried to channel some of this negative energy. We have a four day weekend, so I took a day for myself. Coffee with various friends, shopping for plants, then I spent nearly the whole day reclaiming four flower beds that I’ve neglected the past two years. I planted clematis, weigelia, passion flower, nasturtium, and revamped the entrance of our building with columnar conifers. I am exhausted and grubby, but happier than I was 24 hours ago!

Happy Caturday, Happy Father’s Day and Happy Pentecost!

    • debg June 8, 2019 / 7:45 pm

You’re very smart about turning negative energy into positive results. Your gardening efforts sound gorgeous.

  9. Dulcie June 8, 2019 / 3:25 pm

I too love that tail! Its like “okay I can tolerate my tail being fancy but the rest of me has to be plain”.

On my way home I saw a guy on a corner with a leash…took me a second to figure out what was at the other end ; a teeny chihuahua puppy!

Here’s a pep talk for anyone who needs it.

  11. Emsthemonster June 8, 2019 / 3:48 pm

Hello dearest Cutetropolitans, I just thought I would announce that I am still alive and miss you all.

Spring is usually ups and downs for me, but this year it is really exceptional and not just weatherwise, it is downs and downs all the way through 🙂

My mother and 2 cats take turns in being ill so I spent most of my after work time in rushing to hospital/taking at least one of the cats to the vet’s. My Mom and Felix are already on the mend, we don’t know yet about Marci. As I haven’t been at home for more than a few hours that I spend sleeping for a month or so, my home is a complete mess, which makes me feel terrible.

What I learnt from all this is “Cats sleeping for most of the day” is an urban legend. 2-3 hours’ sleep and 21-22 hours’ howling in front of the door as we had to keep Felix inside while he was recovering. At the final hours of desperation I even threatened him that I would sing Hasselhof’s classic ” I have been looking for freedom” if he didn’t stop meowing/howling.

Last weekend my worst fear also came true: because of being exhausted or the sudden change from winter to hot humid summer I fainted while driving. Just for a moment though and the other drivers were quick to react so I did not cause an accident (just wrecked the lawn of a petrol station and stopped traffic for a few minutes on a very busy road)

Apart from all these, I am OK, (daydreaming about sleeping for a week and a nice, clean home) I just would like my sweet Marci to recover too.

I hope all of you have a less tiring spring than I do!

P.S. Weekend open Hamster is beautiful!

    • debg June 8, 2019 / 7:48 pm

So sorry about all these troubles! Hope you’re taking time for self-care.

    • Emsthemonster June 9, 2019 / 4:46 pm

Thank you for all the kind words.
As for the fainting, it is nothing serious I just need to accept that I cannot really function well on 3-4 hours of sleeping for an extended period of time. I could do it in my 20s and 30s but not any more.
Last year I had a thorough neurological test because I turned 40 and it is a requirement for the driving licence and it seems all is well. The neurologists emphasized that serious sleep deprivation is something I should really avoid.
Anyway, tomorrow is a holiday so I am planning to sleep a lot 🙂

  12. dubravkamcvmd June 8, 2019 / 6:42 pm

OMG I’m so sorry! What an intense ordeal, but if Mom and one of the cats is on the mend, it’s looking significantly better! The fainting though sounds really bad, aside from the lucky-no-one-was-hurt accident! Is fainting something you do? You talk about it as though it’s somehow to be expected under the circumstances. Obviously I know nothing about your situation but I don’t think fainting is something to be Oh Well!ed about. I hope this is something you can deal with.

  13. phredsmom June 8, 2019 / 6:51 pm

Ems, all I can say is, keep moving, things will change for the better. Truly.
The fainting spell while behind the wheel is scary, and is a message. A similar
thing happened to me in NYC years back, from lack of sleep and exhaustion. Stop looking at the dust bunnies, they are not looking at you reproachfully even though it feels that they
are. Do Only the absolute musts, and farm out as much as you can. All this will
change. Can you hire a cleaning service for just one day? It could be worth it.

    • Dulcie June 8, 2019 / 11:49 pm

Oh Ems so glad your guardian angel was doing her duty! Take care xxoo.
