Weekend Open Thread

We’re going to a bed and breakfast today, Cutetropolitans. Here’s reader Michelle H. with the details:

Went to beautiful Astoria and stayed at a B&B, whose main attraction was “22 pounds of Maine Coon love” — the friendly Bruno. I fell in love at first belly rub.

Got sick when I was there and Bruno was my bedside companion during my convalescence.  He served as my warm purry pillow. It’s a good thing he didn’t fit into my luggage or Bruno might have gone on a road trip with me back home.

cat on bed
It helped that he couldn’t get off the bed.

(And don’t worry, bold beautiful Bruno is on a diet and has already lost 2 pounds; they put his food dish at the bottom of the stairs so he has to get some exercise if he wants to eat.)

And the little fellow is my long term traveling companion— Wally the Welsh dragon.

cat with stuffed toy
He also loves cats.

Bruno and his pet dragon are adorable!

Great news about my dad – he has improved so much over the past week the hospital is going to discharge him this afternoon! Instead of being sent to the rehab centre he will receive physiotherapy at home. They’ve even provided him with a special mattress designed to prevent pressure sores and a cushion to raise the height of his armchair so it’s easier to get in and out of. It’s hard to take it all in, given that three weeks ago he was in such a poor state I didn’t expect him to come home at all. Every time I saw him in hospital he mentioned how much he was looking forward to visiting the local park – I can’t wait to take him there tomorrow!

Thanks, all! He’s now ensconced in his favourite chair, watching TV and eating crackers and cheese…

That kitty would either be coming home with me or I’d ask if the B&B is hiring. That is one gorgeous Maine kitty. They are amazing cats, used to cat sit one for a friend of ours and he was sooo sweet. Thankfully, he adored being brushed as that was a daily requirement or he’d have to get shaved (which he hated).

Sorry that you were sick during your stay but good to have a snuggle companion like Bruno. Love the dragon too.

Been busy running around the last few days as I had a 4 day weekend! July 4 was spent at our state park Old Town San Diego which celebrated the 4th as they would have back in the 1800’s. Lots of people dressed up in period appropriate clothing, a band playing old-timey music, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and a parade around the square led by a 1st Sgt of the 1st US Dragoons. Afterwards there was games and crafts for the kids dancing for the adults, and of course pie eating contests. Oh and can’t forget about the cow chip throwing contest, either. LOL. Was a pretty fun day.

Yesterday and today are errands, haircuts, and getting craft projects organized. Since there will be no wi-fi and/or internet available when I’m on the Alaska cruise at the end of the month, I had figure out something to keep me occupied so I’m attempting to machine knit Nativity figures in the manner of Izzy/comfort dolls. We’ll see how successful I am. I was going to try and do some basic weaving on a small loom but I think that’s not going to happen. Never realized how involved weaving can be. I thought it was wrap some yarn around the pegs, weave more yarn between them and presto, a nice square for making an afghan. Not quite but I’m not ready to throw in the towel (or yarn) just yet. Then tomorrow might be a movie day.

Oh, almost forgot – I am now officially a Canadian citizen. Whoo Hoo!!! 3 months after they started reviewing my application I received the certificate, on the day after Canada Day and 2 days before 4th of July. I thought the timing was appropriate for this dual citizen. Now to work on getting my passport and learn the words to O Canada.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

    • fkaWaldenPond July 6, 2019 / 9:28 am

Welcome fellow Canadian! How, why did you apply? Do you have Canadian parents?

    • dubravkamcvmd July 6, 2019 / 9:36 am

      Congratulations! You’re so lucky!

    • debg July 6, 2019 / 10:01 am

      Congrats on the dual citizenship!

If you have weaving questions, you can always ask me. I work for a company that makes looms of all sizes, after all! And I’m a weaver myself. Machine knitting will definitely produce usable fabric, and so will small frame looms. If you haven’t tried a Zoom Loom, it might do exactly what you need; it produces 4″ squares that can be sewn together.

    • Dulcie July 6, 2019 / 4:34 pm

      Canajun now eh? 👏

    • AJ July 6, 2019 / 5:45 pm

Thanks everyone for the good wishes. I was able to claim Canadian citizenship through my mom, she was still a Canadian when I was born. Over the years, Canada kept changing their definition of who qualified and the latest change restored my mom’s citizenship even though she became a naturalized American back in the 60s. And because of that, I was able to apply.

For some reason, weaving has me stumped but using a circular knitting machine like an Addi gives me no problems. I may look into that Zoom Loom Deb G or just hold off on trying to figure it out til winter. I may go back to a rectangular loom, the first time I couldn’t follow the instructions but some YouTube videos make it look a lot easier than I remember.

And thanks Allein for that video. Great song and reminds me. of what I love (and miss) about Canada. My favorite Canadian song is about my mom’s province and sung by that wonderful songbird Anne Murray, Farewell to Nova Scotia.

Always happy to welcome a new fellow Canadian A J 🇨🇦

Bruno is not fat, he’s just very very fluffy.

I went to the cinema yesterday because of the heat here and I was a little nervous to see the movieYesterday about a world where the Beatles never existed because I usually hate anyone singing Beatles songs except for the Beatles themselves but in the trailer the actor seemed to be respectful of the songs and I had a free ticket so at worst I could just walk out.

Well, I loved every minutes of it! Don’t believe the bad review from critics, they just want to movie to be something it’s not. It’s a fun sweet movie and if you love the Beatles I highly recommend it.

I won’t spoil anything but there is a scene near the end of the movie that brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my lips at the same time.

    Such good news, Alice!

i spent my 4th cleaning my bathroom and nursing a slight sore throat. Had a fun coughing fit around 3:17 this morning. I hadn’t had a fever but this now it’s 99.2. Supposed to be going to my parents’ for dinner tonight but my uncle will be there and I don’t know if I should be around him. Also going to the Marvel exhibit at the Franklin Institute tomorrow so I really hope I’m not getting worse.

Congrats, AJ. I was going to post this as a belated Canada Day thing (since I just saw it on the 4th) but I’ll post it in your honor, instead.

In Canada, written by Dave Hadfield; performed by Chris Hadfield and Dave Hadfield

“A polite song from two brothers who are just hoping your day is going okay.”

    • allein 🐾 July 6, 2019 / 7:53 pm

So from one of the ‘related’ videos at the end of this song I discovered the series Rare Earth, by Chris Hadfield’s son Evan. I have been entertained all afternoon. (There are also some earlier videos about Chris and going to space and some other music he did, and some fun “Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth” videos that apparently tie into his book of the same name that came out in 2013.) [If you watch the Rare Earth videos be sure to read the title card/credits at the end and also watch all the way past it.]

Michelle H., it’s great that you had such support during your illness. I’ve met a few Maine coons and adore them. Bruno seems like a wonderful ambassador for the species.

I got some sad news last Sunday and it made for an emotionally difficult week. The day off on Thursday, then working half a day on Friday, also discombulated me. (Have I mentioned that I cling to routines? I try to schedule time for spontaneity, but it never seems to work.) Today I should be cleaning and reorganizing the basement, but can’t work up the energy to get covered in cat hair. So I’ll dive into another task on my endless list and see if the morning caffeine will perk me up.

  8. Ricky & Bibi's Mom July 6, 2019 / 10:11 am

Dropping in to say that Bibi is much, much better, but has decided she only wants gushy fuds and is holding out for that. Sooner or later she’ll be hungry and have to eat her dental kibble—I hope. Yesterday she crunched exactly two pieces of it as loudly as she could, while staring/glaring at me. It was the most sarcastic eating I’ve ever seen!

    • allein 🐾 July 6, 2019 / 10:17 am

I shall carry this image with me in my head all day. 🙂

    • debg July 6, 2019 / 10:32 am

I love the idea of sarcastic eating.

I’m so happy that she’s on the mend. Fred Weasleycat also continues to improve.

      • Carlotta July 6, 2019 / 11:43 am

Happy to hear that dad and pets are doing better!! One of my kitties demonstrated sarcastic eating a few weeks ago. He is in hearty middle age, just prefers canned to dry and isn’t going to get it every meal. It’s amazing how expressive pointed glaring and crunching can be, even from a cat! He did eat more than two pieces, though!

    • SoccerSue July 6, 2019 / 11:34 am

Yep, I’ve experienced the sarcastic eating, too. My cat loves her Temptations treats but the Greenies dental treats, not so much. When she meows for more treats I make her eat the Greenies before she gets more Temptations, and I get the stink-eye the whole time.

    • AJ July 6, 2019 / 5:12 pm

Sarcastic eating, snort laugh. Love the image that popped in my mind. And yeah for Bibi feeling better. Today seems to be the day for good news.

  9. Duckie 🐥 July 6, 2019 / 12:27 pm

Seems to be a generally upbeat mood today here. May I add to it?
I don’t remember if I said this on Thursday, but I’ll put it here (again). Saw the doctor for my post-ER visit on Thursday. Lungs clear, temperature normal, blood pressure normal and down eleven pounds! Weighed myself again this morning, and it’s now thirteen pounds! I need to lose thirty five prednisone pounds, and then hopefully another twenty ‘sick’ pounds.
Hubby gave two weeks notice at his old job and starts the job he wanted, full-time, near the end of the month. Old boss now frantically offering good stuff to keep hubby, but when hubby asks for the new benefits to be put in writing, old boss blanches. I just laugh.
Finances are easing. By Monday, we will be all caught up on bills. Then MAYBE I can stop fretting about them.
Next week I start decluttering. I’ve temporarily given up on hubby getting rid of “things”, but I’m going to put them in boxes and store them neatly. Same with much of my stuff. It will still be here, but out of sight.
Next Tuesday my best friend is taking me out to look at fabric and craft stores across the line. We’re going to make a full day of it. I’ve been saving my “allowance” for several weeks for this trip, plus an unexpected fifty dollars from a poker lotto ticket. This is my money, unbudgeted, and I can spend it without feeling guilty. (Knowing me, though, I’ll probably use some for groceries.)
I’m sending EVERYONE happy feathered hugs right now, and wish everyone a fantastic weekend. And whoever manages to acquire Bruno, please let me know. I want to snorgle that belly SO bad.

        • allein 🐾 July 9, 2019 / 9:20 am

          Huh, never saw that before.

I was going to ask if they were the ones that sound like squeaky toys.
