Weekend Open Thread

Brrr! It’s getting chilly in Cutetropolis, so let’s visit Michelle H. to see how her kitties are keeping warm:

Now that the weather is turning cooler, I wanted to set up a little primo spot for the kittens by the fireplace, complete with box, cat bed, and even a little catnip for good measure. Cheshire outright rejected the spot, and this is how Bertie responded.

‘… my fuzzy little weirdo.’

Box AND cat bed in front of a warm fire??? Talk about kitty nirvana. Somebody is incredibly spoiled (as they should be, of course). 🐱

Adorable kitten. I’m guessing the nip had an effect on Bertie’s interaction with the cat bed.

    • Squiddy November 9, 2019 / 9:56 am

The cat bed is one of his favorite toys. It used to be in the bedroom, but he dragged it out into the living room and occasionally wrestles with it to prove who’s the boss. It’s especially entertaining if Cheshire is snuggling in it at the time.

Bertie is such a cutie, too bad Cheshire didn’t see the benefits of a bed AND a box right by the warmth. Maybe they should come visit me, we’re going to be almost 80 today in SoCal. Still breaking out the shorts in Nov.

Awww…such a cute kitteh! Maybe Cheshire will see how much fun Bertie is having and join in eventually. I wish MY gas fireplace worked, complete with cuddly anipals!πŸ˜‹

    • Squiddy November 9, 2019 / 9:50 am

Actually, it’s an electric fireplace. I love it, because it means I can use it in the heat of summer for ambiance, but with the heat turned off. And the cognitive dissonance amuses me.

      • 6rabbits November 9, 2019 / 9:47 pm

        I would love that!πŸ₯°

When Stars & Stripes were little Stars was caught digging in the (cooled) ashes some time after a fire had burned out. Another time Stripes got up on the edge of the fireplace and got comfy just inside the mesh curtain, while a fire was burning! 😲 My dad found some clips and wire to keep them from opening the curtains after that one (wired them together where they met at the corner, and somehow attached them to the walls on the sides). They later replaced it with a gas fireplace, which made me a little sad, because I like the sound and smell of a nice wood fire, but was also much safer for curious fuzzies, being enclosed in glass and all.

          There’s always YouTube…

(Picked this one because the channel is called Cat Trumpet. πŸ™‚ )

I also have a fireplace-scented candle (which I light on Christmas Eve while I listen to Neil Gaiman’s reading of A Christmas Carol).

My pup would never say no to prime nesting real estate like that.

    Happy Caturday, everyone.
It’s a three day weekend in the Duckie household. We’re spending the time together just getting a few things done. I have several bags to go to the second hand store. Library. Lunch. Hubby and my dad are going to discuss setting up for wine making. Tomorrow our church is having a pancake breakfast, and I’m taking several of my felt panels to sell. Monday is Remembrance Day. We will watch the ceremony on TV and then go looking for new flannel sheets.
Michelle, I wish I could be one of your cats. Pampered and beautiful.
    Have a great weekend, all.
PS I just got an email from the lady who took in Little Duckie. She says his tail feathers are almost grown in, and he must be having a growth spurt, as he is pigging out. He is now the same size as the older birds in the cage.

    • dubravkamcvmd November 9, 2019 / 12:51 pm

So glad to hear Little Duckie is thriving. Must be a relief for you.

I’d be happy to take Cheshire’s spot by the fireplace and snuggle with Bertie. Might need a bigger cushion, though.

  8. N. Fritz November 9, 2019 / 12:29 pm

It’s my bf’s birthday weekend (his 60th!), which means no school work for me! I will be cooking for the “family” : his ex-girlfriend, her new husband, the ex-girlfriend’s son who is my bf’s de facto step-son, another ex girlfriend and her husband. Sound complicated? it is! but we all get along surprisingly well. and it gives me the opportunity to cook for friends, which is my love language. I get to stay til Monday because my first class isn’t until 11:20. I can easily make it from Vienna Monday morning, the good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise!

    Happy Caturday, y’all!!

    • dubravkamcvmd November 9, 2019 / 12:53 pm

Wow. I think there must be a chemical in your blood that could be used to make effective anti-anxiety medication.

    • fkaWaldenPond November 9, 2019 / 1:26 pm

Oh I like that Fritz ‘cooking for friends is my love language’– I am going to use the ‘love language’ descriptor from now on. πŸ™‚ Cooking I guess is my ‘love language’ as well. What is on the menu?

    So much snow today…

Who is hosting Christmas this year?
    I vote New Year’s with N. Fritz!

  12. Jan B. November 9, 2019 / 1:19 pm

Oh my gosh, if I had a fireplace like that I’d never get Lily away from it! Bertie obviously knows how devious cat beds can be and has a handle on the situation. Well done, Bertie!

  13. Tara November 9, 2019 / 2:35 pm

Happy Caturday everyone! All three of mine are staying warm by doing the sunbeam migration upstairs where the windows are better suited for that sort of thing. My Jacques would be in heaven with that heater. He’s the one I find leaning on the portable radiator.

Can I just vent a little? Why is everything designed to break? It’s been my year of major replacements.
    January: new washing machine
    March: New vacuum cleaner
April: new Mac laptop – only because the old one’s video card died which is no longer manufactured (5 years is the limit) so can’t be replace. Everything else works – just can’t SEE anything.
July: Refrigerator repair – thought it died, thank goodness it didn’t! Just needed $200 repair.
October: cellphone on the fritz, am anticipating that cost. Again, phone works fine, I just can’t charge it because of the plug IN the phone has gone wonky, which isn’t worth the repair. You should see the gerry-rig I have to do to get the plug and charger leaned in exactly. the. right. place…
Today: Color Printer died – more exact – one part failed in the printer (which printed beautifully Thursday!). Since the SOFTWARE believes the printer is broken – it is. !!! Instead of being able to replace the overflow ink pad and reset the printer counter, I have to purchase a whole new printer to the tune of $1500. Yup – I need a good one for my work. I also have $300 worth of ink in the drawer which is only compatible with my printer!!! ARGH!

Think I’m going to go outside and whack away at paper mulberries that are invading my yard. I can also furiously rake up some leaves, maybe something else needs a good scrubbing, grrr…. Maybe I’ll feel better.

Thanks for reading. I know my problems are minor compared to others. You all sound good though? N. Fritz – have a wonderful cooking day! Duckie I hope you also enjoy your plans for the day and pancakes tomorrow. Sounds good! And, AJ? please keep your nice little warm-shorts-situation to yourself! It’s freezing in Philadelphia! 45F πŸ˜‰ xo

Things are indeed designed to fail – it’s called “planned obsolescence.” I share your frustration.

      • dubravkamcvmd November 9, 2019 / 3:19 pm

Planned obsolescence was something the thieves that run our large corporations thought of within my lifetime. I remember the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner my parents bought in the ’50s. My mother finally got rid of the refrigerator in the 80s because she just couldn’t stand looking at it anymore. It was working fine. Never needed to be repaired. The vacuum cleaner was tossed in the early 2000s because it was just too heavy. Worked perfectly.

    • allein 🐾 November 9, 2019 / 2:48 pm

My dad got me third-party ink which worked fine, except my printer did a firmware update a few days ago and is now telling me that it doesn’t recognize the black ink cartridge. Grr. (Haven’t mentioned this to my dad, yet, nor did I test to see what happens if I actually try to print something. This “let’s put a chip on the ink so you can only use our ink with our printer so we can charge you more” thing is BS.)

Also my kitchen sink drain is slow. Gonna try the baking soda and vinegar thing this afternoon (partly because it’s all I got right now; meant to look for a sink plunger when I was at Target the other day but I forgot).

PS, it’s 42 here at my house in central NJ, if it makes you feel any better. 😜

    • Faye November 9, 2019 / 4:02 pm

Tara I have literally taken fairly new printers and heaved them into the garbage bin because they worked once or twice then not at all!!!

  14. Faye November 9, 2019 / 3:58 pm

    Happy Weekend.

It is 39 degrees here. Millie and I are in for the day.

I made a small batch of tomato basil sauce for al dente bow tie pasta. I make the sauce from canned no salt diced tomatoes and sauce. Comes out tasting mare fresh than store bought. I cook with no or low salt ingredients now. Surprisingly if I enough spices I do not miss the salt.

Still improving with physical therapy with pain reduced. But I have a long way to go to improve my gait and get my balance back.

After a break the day shifts from chores to artwork which is never a chore.

Millie and I do not have a fireplace of any kind but we do love our oversized medical grade heating pad.

Now there’s a belly for scritchin”! How adorable!

Wow, there’s a lot going on this weekend with all of you – Tara – so sorry for all the rotten mishaps! Duckie – glad to hear L’il Duckie is doing so well! N.Fritz, we’ll be over for Thanksgiving so you can speak the Language of Love for us all to hear!

Pussycats by the fire – iconography at its best. delicious little fluff ball.

I’m doing some cleaning of bunny area, clipped some bunny nails, then out to the garden with my new chainsaw and loppers to prune the bejeepers out of anything that’s in my way. Watch out, World!

    • Tara November 10, 2019 / 3:37 pm

Chainsaw Murray C.? Wow – braver woman than I am! How did it go?

      • Murray C. November 10, 2019 / 10:51 pm

Turned out I didn’t need the chainsaw today, just big loppers and secateur. I did major damage to a climbing rose and trimmed my fig tree and started to wrap it but I need a better tarp than what I have. Got to eat the last two figs in the process! My chainsaw is called an Alligator and it has jaws that clamp onto the branch so it’s much safer than a regular chainsaw – which I’ve used in the past, but this one looked kinda cool. I was able to clear out a whole lot of downed branches from an oak and a pine. Worked a treat.
