Get to know this cute endangered “water monster”
The salamander known as the axolotl is cute, in a quirky-alien-from-space sort of way. It has an innocent smile, an adorable yawn, and a “crown” of odd protrusions on its head. It can also regrow lost limbs and vacuums up its food, which is more freaky than cute. Sadly, the axolotl is critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss. Reader Holly H. shares this Dodo compilation of axol-oddness.

I will never grow tired of the axolotl song!

I think itβs the kazoo that really makes it.
How strange that it’s so sensitive to habitat loss and yet so physically resilient to having its limbs regenerate.
I guess it makes sense, given that they’re found in only two lakes in the world, and both are in Mexico.
Still, one would expect such a resilient little creature would be present in other lakes all over the world. There doesn’t seem to be anything special about Mexican lakes, habitat-wise, that you can’t find elsewhere in the world.
