That’s Bunnanas

The world of modern art was abuzz this week with the debut of the avant-garde installation titled Bun’s Search for Meaning in the Eternal Void of Nothingness and Not Just a Banana Taped to a Wall, which turned out to be just a banana taped to a wall.

That’ll be 150,000 carrots, please.

Critics were split, with some decrying the work as intellectually slippery and not likely to age well, while others said it had a certain a-peel.

I don’t know about art, but I know what I like with cereal.

Mike, the person who created these photographs may be a soul mate.

I was thinking the same thing!

That is totally redunkulous. I may be old fashioned but I just don’t understand art these days. Considering what’s passed off as “art” makes me ready to take up a paint brush and see if I can sell some. Very cute bun buns, that’s probably the best part of this post.

AJ, I am with you on this. I am an art enthusiast in all ways, shapes, and forms. I feel that I understand the concept of “reacting” and “feeling the emotion” that art can inspire. I am totally open to all types of creativity!! But dammit, when you tape a banana to a wall (or urinate on a white canvas) it is ludicrous and offensive!! To be clear…I feel it is NOT art, it is merely someone laughing at the gallery going public. Its merely a scam.

It’s totally art, it’s just crap. Being art isn’t about being worthwhile or pretty or taking skill to make. Saying it’s art doesn’t validate it. Art is just a means of expression. The banana is bad art.

A friend of mine taught a philosophy of art class and I provided her with material to consider: to wit, the Precious Moments Chapel in Carthage, Mo. Google it if you dare (in particular the murals). She and I were agreed that the artistic value was questionable, but don’t tell the people who visit en masse every summer!

      • Dulcie January 5, 2020 / 12:39 pm

Ha ha Fritz I just checked it out!! 😂 Yes, the inspiration for the art might have been a bit questionable but at least someone showed so.e talent in the depiction!!
I am still hooting about the stained glass panels.
So hey, I guess I am “reacting” to the “art” 😂

I have actually been there, albeit many years ago…the Louvre it ain’t!

    • Blue Footed Booby January 6, 2020 / 9:54 am

Pretty sure the banana is supposed to be “conceptual art,” which is a movement where the point of a work is the, well, concept of it. The idea is what matters, while the actual work is often perfunctory. It can be insightful and thought-provoking when done well. It just also attracts the kind of person who wants to find out how openly contemptuous they can be of the art patron class and still get funded.

I’m not a fan of the banana aesthetically, but I can appreciate anyone clever enough to get rich snobs to figuratively sniff poo and pretend to enjoy it.

I love this! especially all the cottontails in the second picture.

My dad’s 80th birthday is today. They’ve invited over 70 people for an “open house.” I’m expecting it to be more of a “mad house” with that many people. sigh. Not really my cup of tea. But then again, it’s not about me! ;D! I will get to see lots of family I haven’t seen in a while, and my niece and nephew are always entertaining.

Hoping your Sunday is lovely wherever you are!

Many happy returns to your father, Tara. And when the party gets too much, just remember that it will end plus your dad will have lots of happy memories.

      • debg January 5, 2020 / 11:43 am

What AJ said. Happy birthday to your dad!

    • Kar January 5, 2020 / 12:08 pm

Either way, i hope that your Dad and his friends/family have a crazy fun time catching up with each other and having great birthday memories for your Dad.

    • Tara January 6, 2020 / 1:30 am

Thank you All for your kind wishes for my dad. The party was a great success and he said a few times, “this is a memorable birthday.” That makes me happy.

I’d like to know how they kept the bun buns from not trying to get the banana, let alone have them sit still with cute little berets on their precious heads. Sorry but that’s not what I’d call “art”. And the what about the people who will actually buy that?

Suddenly craving a bowl of Cheerios…

And I read somewhere that art auctions can be a front for money laundering, so there’s that.

    • dubravkamcvmd January 5, 2020 / 11:28 am

Hah! Everything is a front for money laundering.

  6. debg January 5, 2020 / 11:43 am

Bunbuns in berets! They look so jaunty and hip.

  7. kermit January 5, 2020 / 11:58 am

My favorite “modern art” story is the one where the night cleanup crew removed a pile of garbage from the floor, not realizing that it was an exhibit. A second favorite is a somebody forgot their glasses on the wall fire alarm, and people thought it was a real exhibit.

Anything can be art if you’re good at marketing it correctly.

    • Faye January 5, 2020 / 12:20 pm

I remember both of those incidents!

  8. Elaine Williamson January 5, 2020 / 12:25 pm

This reminds me of the Pet Rock, someone wanting to see just how stupid people can be. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  9. Faye January 5, 2020 / 12:28 pm

As an artist my criteria for others art starts with the question could I do that myself. Then comes would I have thought of that.

But it’s art if you think it is or if others are willing to pay the “artist” hard cash.

My title for the photos of Beret Bunns is “Everyone’s A Critic!”

New rule of cuteness: all animals must wear berets!

Stop the presses, just discovered my city will be getting its second cat cafe. And it’s a wine bar!!!! Will wonders never cease? Loving the name – Whiskers & Wine. Check it out here for all the details https://www.whiskersandwinebar.com. Can’t wait for it to open and go visit.

    • dubravkamcvmd January 5, 2020 / 3:48 pm

This isn’t fair!!!!! I want to drink Meownhattans and play with kittens! It looks fabulous! I’m truly envious.

      • AJ January 5, 2020 / 4:27 pm

Well, we can always plan a Cutetropolis get-together and make a field trip. Once it opens I’ll have to report back to everyone if it’s as fantastic as they make it out to be.

I really do wish there was a way to give a note to these posts. I would give this one five stars.

  12. Jeannine Pope-Carter January 6, 2020 / 7:18 am

How can I get a teeny, tiny beret for my cat? I can put him in front of my husband’s art for some “critiques” every now and then, type up his meows and put it in “Art in America” magazine?

  13. Carlotta January 6, 2020 / 12:11 pm

I bet you could get berets in a large toy department. Those My Life dolls have everything! Should be about the right size for a bun, cat, or smoll dog.

    • allein 🐾 January 6, 2020 / 12:14 pm

Build-a-Bear Workshop might have one that would work (didn’t see berets, specifically, but I didn’t go past the first page)
