You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Carrot

Gliding silently through the dense grass, the deadly shark rabbit hunts its prey. With only its ears occasionally breaking the green surface, it can approach an unsuspecting cabbage or lettuce without warning, tearing its helpless victim leaf from leaf.

Better check my yard before going out, that deadly shark rabbit might be out there. Actually I should put out some shark rabbit bait of fresh greens and lettuce, hoping to attract some. They’re welcome at my house.

So sleek. Makes me wish my yard had grass just so this bun bun would come visit. Hope all my fellow Americans had a decent 4th and your neighbors weren’t idiots when it came to fireworks.

      As if…this year was worse.

Same here. Fortunately the cats are completely oblivious.

I thought it was just a rock and then BAM! I was nuzzled by that soft twitchy nose! 😨

AJ – I swear I was hearing fireworks for three hours. I thought the racetrack’s fireworks were canceled so I don’t even know if any of them were legit or not. The track is only a mile and a half away so I hear them pretty clearly (but can’t see them because of the way my building faces, and trees.) And some seemed to be coming from the other direction. For a little bit the frequency seemed like a planned sequence (like, I can always tell when the finale is at the racetrack) but then it dropped off, but I was hearing them until after midnight.

What if we had a less war-based national anthem? Do we need “the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air”? “Oh! Beautiful for spacious skies” is so much better to me.

I would not object to that.

I have never liked The Star-Spangled Banner as an anthem, and I like it less than ever now. As for fireworks, they were still going off in my neighborhood at 2:00 AM.

            Sigh. So sorry.

“This Land is Your Land” has always been my first choice, though I wonder how I’d feel about it if I were a member of a Native American nation.

Personally I object to a national anthem mentioning a deity, and to any hint of flag worship. Your mileage may vary.

Maybe “Ashokan Farewell” might be a good candidate. No lyrics. Everyone just sings “la-la-la” and lets it mean whatever it means to them.

            Agreed.

National anthems are kind of inherently about stirring nationalism. Whether that’s done directly or through symbols like flags seems pretty immaterial. The larger problem is that the Star Spangled banner is just not a very good song.

In any case my vote is for Regurgitated Guts, by Death.

Thankfully it wasn’t too bad in my neighborhood, I could hear the public fireworks from downtown area and a few surrounding towns but they stopped by 9 pm. To be honest, I thought the fireworks had been cancelled, guess not. But then we had an idiot in my neighborhood decide to start lighting some off at 11 pm just as I was going to bed. I was objecting quite loudly with the window open, and whoever, wherever (sounded close like one of my neighbors) finished that batch and didn’t start back up. I feel bad for my niece, she lives in a mobile home park and has been dealing with this for weeks. The cops keep coming out but her neighbors just don’t care. I think she said Friday night, there were around 15 local police and county sheriff cars trying to deal with it. I think people are just bored and over everything and just don’t give a dang anymore but still that’s not an excuse to be rude. Sorry for everyone that had to deal with inconsiderate morons, hopefully tonight will be better.

Some guy in Brooklyn set his house on fire a few nights ago, by accidentally shooting a rocket into his window, didn’t even realize it, and kept shooting them off while his house was going up in flames. Then just a little while ago I saw a headline about a guy in Jersey City who died after getting hit in the neck (not sure if he was the one who set it off or not). People are so reckless and stupid sometimes.

I hear they can smell a drop of kale smoothie from up to a mile away.

Dont forget to put out water if you can for the critters.
Ive set water where rabbits can access it and have been rewarded with lawn bunnies who set shop in the back yard.
Reliable water source equals happy wildlife.

    • ^oo^ July 5, 2020 / 10:59 pm

I’ve got a small trough with water. We have deer, turkeys, quail, coyotes, raccoons who stop by. Put out water but please don’t offer food however…

Our National Anthem is not easy to sing, spanning a couple of octaves. It supposedly was
a drinking melody way back when. I can only imagine what that sounded like.

  10. Murray C. July 6, 2020 / 6:41 pm

“Hymn to Anacreon in Heaven” was the name of the drinking song our anthem was set to. I find the words incomprehensible (last time I looked, anyway – ages ago)
