Welcome to Caturday! A few weeks ago, reader Candi celebrated her cat Shibley’s sweet 16th birthday! Shibley (or “The Queen” as Candi also calls her) got a birthday cupcake and probably some other treats as well.

Beautiful, cat, beautiful portrait. I’m going to my sister’s today. Her tomatoes are ready for harvest.Yay! I LOVE tomatoes!
Roast some for me?
Happy birthday darling girl! So pretty. Not much to do today. Running errands and trying to stay cool, SoCal is having a heatwave for the next week or so. What a way to end Aug.
A 16-year old kitten! 😮
Awwwwww, what a beautiful birthday kitty! 😻
Shibley is gorgeous!
So on Monday, Iowa was hit with a derecho storm, which is described as an inland hurricane. I have been through tornadoes but have never seen anything like this, massive destruction. I finally got power and internet back yesterday, so very grateful for that, 1000’s are still without. Oh, and also this week, I learned I am being furloughed as of this Monday. (Our payroll protection plan has run out.) Since I am on my own, I am feeling a bit anxious but I have applied for unemployment and am cashing in my unused paid time off, which will be a decent chunk of change. Keeping my fingers crossed that this will be s short-term situation!
Aw, sorry to hear this AmyLiz! I hope things get back to normal soon on all fronts!
So sorry about all these stressors, Amyliz. We’re crossing our paws for you here, that everything will work out quickly and you won’t have to worry about income.
Hang in there Amyliz, thinking of you.
AmyLiz, I’m so sorry you got furloughed. After the initial shock subsides I hope you can enjoy the time off. I really did. Will be thinking of you though, hang in there!
You have our support and best wishes.
So sorry so much bad happened to you, and all at once. I hope your worries are resolved soon.
Good morning, everybody! Happy birthday to that gorgeous kitcat—long live the Queen!
As many of you know, last weekend was pretty devastating. I’ve also been dealing with pain in my right elbow (probably tendinitis, but I can’t get to the doctor until the 27th). So instead of working on my numerous DIY projects, I’m just taking it easy. Chores, maybe some baking for friends, and lots of yarn. It’s a good weekend to play with my spinning wheels while listening to good books or watching great TV.
Shameless self promo: if you have ever wondered what someone looks like when they’re spinning, i am the spokesspinner at my company’s redesigned website:

How cool is that?? Love their logo too. I used to be a regular at the “World Sheep Festival” in Bethel, Missouri. They did a Sheep to Shawl contest that was crazy exciting!
oooooh! look at you! What a gorgeous pic! Of course they picked you as the current “Face of Schacht.”
Re your tendinitis, I’m so sorry. That’s not fun. Do you know about arnica? I get tendinitis bad in my hands and wrists, too much repetitive activity. When that happens I slather arnica (available at any health food store or Whole Foods type store) on the sore limb and wrap it in an ace bandage over night. One year, I had it so bad in my wrist and elbow I took a pressure stocking, cut holes for fingers and thumbs and pulled that over my arm. After a few nights of that it usually goes away. Hope you feel better soon!
I did not know about arnica! Thanks for the tip—will try to get some tomorrow. I do have elbow braces now, so that combo might be very effective. The worst part is that I’ve really been enjoying my walking workouts lately and do not want to stop, so I try to limit motions with my bad arm.
Lily on the Lam! After escaping the local penitentiary, Lily led the local constabulary on a high speed pursuit, defying capture with a combination of speed and guile! Mostly just speed though. Finally law enforcement officers pulled out the ultimate weapon… a can of tuna! Thus was the crime spree of Lawless Lily ended and the miscreant put back behind bars where she belongs.
😻😻
Another scofflaw cat! Glad she’s back home and safe, Jan.
Lily! Don’t go giving your mama heart attacks! Jan B., So glad you know what her kryptonite is. 🙂
I”m really bothered by that picture, she looks like she’s about to go down the rabbit hole (so to speak) underneath the porch.
Ack!!!!
Oh that’s scary. Glad she’s easily distracted.
Happy birthday, Shibley!
I found a shirt for Caturday…
Okay, I want that shirt. How can I find it online?
It was in an ad on facebook. If I find the source again I’ll let you know. I tried doing a google search for the image but it didn’t find me a source for that specific shirt.
I would love a link. Tried searching myself but got nowhere.
Oh I’m in the market for more than one – I know my sister would love it too.
I didn’t find this shirt here, lightinthebox.com, but they seem to have lots of really great cat shirts. Caveat emptor: I do not buy things on the internet, and do not know if this is a reputable company.
Ah! There are probably still a lot of stores in Europe that you can walk into, pick out clothes, and try them on! Those were the days! When the clothes I have wear out I’ll have to wrap myself in sheets.
What a beautiful princess you are Shibley. Happy birthday gorgeous girl!
We returned to work this week. It was a rough re-entry to say the least. I got more comfortable as the week went on, but there is so much to do. First off, come up with a better fitting mask made of fabric that doesn’t soak up every molecule of sweat! That’s today’s project.
We got a lot of watermelon in our farm share the last two weeks. I’m noshing away on that so that I can make a second batch of watermelon rind pickle. Am also considering making my first batch of cantaloupe pickle.
Have a wonderful weekend all!
I have some from Old Navy, which are the folded type (like fabric versions of the regular surgical masks). They’re just stiff enough that they don’t get sucked against my face if I’m breathing the slightest bit heavily (like after climbing the stairs to the office) like a couple others I have, but soft enough that they are comfortable to wear. They’re about $12 for a set of five and they have a bunch of different color/pattern themed sets.
I got a cantaloupe the other day. Haven’t had any yet this summer (usually I just get it from the cafeteria in the morning but haven’t had that option since March). Also got strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and white peaches.
Going to my parents’ for dinner…hamburgers and corn on the cob, apparently. And apple pie. I get to bring the ice cream. (Debating if I want to bring the full container of chocolate/vanilla from my freezer or stop at Wawa and just pick up a pint of vanilla.)
Thanks for the recommendation Allein! I will check them out. I commute on bicycle to work and I wear a mask while riding. Turns out the best masks for riding are those I’ve made from my African fabrics which were made with a wax resist pattern. There must still be some in there to keep the moisture from soaking the fabric. Those I’ve made from 100% cotton quilting fabric soak it right up and I can’t breath.
Enjoy your fruit and icecream! (I vote for, take the stuff from your freezer and buy some more on the way home) 😉
My consideration came down to whether my parents would want to keep the leftovers because I don’t want to worry about bringing it back home. They said yes. I have other ice cream.
Another note on the masks – the first set I got from Old Navy didn’t have adjustable ear loops (though they weren’t a problem for me), but I had to return something last week and part of it went on a gift card, so I just picked up another set to use it up, and those are adjustable. I haven’t used the new ones yet, though.
Ooooo. Watermelon Pickle! Childhood memory. Thank you!
Happy Birthday to Queen Shibley- what a gorgeous kitty!
I have next week off from work- a much needed mental health break that I requested when we started getting busy again, ’cause I knew I was going to need it. Going to help my aunt pack the truck for her move to New Orleans on Monday, and going to a very small, outdoor, socially-distanced wedding on Thursday. Other than that, just a couple of day trips. I’ve always wanted to go on the gondola at Mt. Rainier, so we’re doing that on Tuesday. It looks like they’re taking a lot of steps to keep people safe, including only having one couple/party in each gondola car so you don’t have to share a closed space with strangers. This has the added benefit of making sure no one hears me whimpering all the way to the top (heights and I don’t get along). 😛
Supposed to be a hot weekend here in the Pacific NW (100 degrees tomorrow- oof!) so I’m going to be staying right here in our air conditioned house and socially-distanced 3 acres, since I’m sure any place near the water around here will be absolutely packed with people.
Still getting used to being a cat-less household, and after two weeks I still expect to see Lahara sitting on hubby’s lap when I get home, or lying on our bed when I come upstairs. Sigh… We got her memorial stone and it looks great (I can highly recommend http://www.apetmemorial.com if anyone is needing one- they do beautiful work and ship very quickly. The owner is the daughter of a former player for my Seattle Sounders soccer team, too.)
You are so good at self-care! I’m sure it helps fuel your generosity toward others.
I keep thinking about you and your hubby. Grief does subside, but it takes a while.
Absolutely need to self care these days. You deserve it!
Took the first day off since December on Friday and i couldn’t enjoy it. Was just waiting for the other shoe to drop when I go back on Monday.
Ok, that took about five seconds to get that. Five seconds longer than it should’ve
I’m embarrassed to say – me too.
