Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to another weekend, fellow Cutetropolitans! Make yourself at home in the chat room, but please, as a courtesy to any sleeping kitties, no flash photography — something reader Muppet2171 learned the hard way:

First pic is Miss Penny napping and me forgetting the flash was on. Second pic is the immediate aftermath.

Cat sleeps
Ah, this environment free of flashing light is so relaxing.

I swear, cats give the best looks evar! 😆
Miss Penny is a beautiful cat! I know she’s not Siamese, is she Himalayan?? I like that she doesn’t have the flat nose.

    • Muppet2171 December 5, 2020 / 11:48 am

      She’s actually a birman.

      • 6rabbits December 5, 2020 / 2:41 pm

Okay, had to look that up. I was unaware of that breed, but Miss Penny is a perfect example. ☺️

Poor Miss Penny, having to deal with the pawparazzi all the time.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. It’s raining here but supposed to stop around 1-2pm.

Came across this Cuteropolitan Christmas Carol the other day…

    • dubravkamcvmd December 5, 2020 / 9:18 am

      Thank you. Very festive!

Perfect for Cutetropolis—and at the same time, perfect for 2020!

      • allein 🐾 December 5, 2020 / 10:17 am

We’re all screaming possums this year.

    • debg December 5, 2020 / 2:41 pm

I’m ded. And I’m not predisposed to like possums. This is hilarious and adorable.

      • 6rabbits December 5, 2020 / 3:04 pm

BABY possums are exceptionally cute.💙 Much more so than the adults—for me it’s the incredibly pointed muzzle that sorta turns me off. I rescued a baby possum I found by the side of the road, we thought he was dead but he moved when I touched him, and he was too adorable! (We quickly got him to wild life rehabber). Watch the video!

        • debg December 5, 2020 / 3:32 pm

Okay, you might have me convinced now. Maybe I can forgive the one that scared me in the bushes, back in the 90s, or the one that used to eat cat food off my porch in Kansas.

Leona is the perfect name for a possum.

            • 6rabbits December 5, 2020 / 4:30 pm

I know! I saw this too, and was like “that does not even look like a opossum!”

        • dubravkamcvmd December 6, 2020 / 7:38 am

I’m surprised at how adorable Leona is.

Princess Penny is not amused at the interruption. I just love her coloring and she looks so soft, not that I’d attempt any snuggles without her royal permission.

Allein, squeeeee! on the adorably festive possums. I’d really like to know how they got outfits on them.

We’re going to finish putting up Christmas decorations today and then do some Christmas shopping. I keep insisting there’s nothing I want and hubby keeps telling me your getting something. Hmmm, what do I really really want? Maybe I should be like the lady from the Stella D’Oro cookies ad after hubby keeps coming home with expensive gifts, “What no Swiss Fudge cookies?” I used to love those cookies, maybe I’ll see if they still sell them.

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom December 5, 2020 / 9:54 am

      No cookies?

    • allein 🐾 December 5, 2020 / 10:29 am

They still sell them around here…I used to love those things.

I put my tiny tree in the window of my ‘office’ yesterday. I usually keep the blinds open in there (since I’m mostly in there during the day when I work from home; at night I’m in the living room and I don’t keep them open there). I thought I was going to have to find a box or something to set it on but it fits fine on the windowsill. Gotta put some bells on it (I have a bunch of silver jingle bells on red ribbons for it). Maybe I’ll test my new phone’s camera and see if I can get a good picture from outside.

Might go to B&N after my parents’ later. We’re doing one small gift each and then we’ll do some charity donations. I always get my mom a calendar and she hinted on Thanksgiving that she expected that to be my gift for her. I was looking online hoping to find something different (it’s always from Lang because she has one of their frames so I know they’ll fit, but a lot of what they carry in the stores are the same ones every year). They actually had a new one that I liked the cover of and it should be in stock at that store. Then I’ll do my book donation while I’m there. And I was thinking of doing gift cards for my friend’s kids (partly because I’m feeling lazy this year and partly because I don’t think I’ll see them for New Year’s Eve like usual so I want to be able to mail them easily). And I might look for something for a couple other friends. I don’t buy for anyone else. (I’ll have to figure out my dad and brother later.)

  4. Duckie 🐥 December 5, 2020 / 11:30 am

    Jibbery morning to all.
Having tea in a sunbeam, with Duckie greeting the day, and GOOD HEAVENS WHAT THE? Two huge raccoons are in the yard digging for food! I’ll send pics in, but sweet Penny, you remind me of them.

  5. SoccerSue December 5, 2020 / 11:54 am

That look on Penny’s face in the second pic is probably how I’ve looked all week. For some reason everything decided to break this week (not me though, at least not yet, haha!). First the hubby ran over some road debris and tore the heck out of the front fender on the car, then my Jeep decided to break down (made it to the repair shop, at least!), and this morning my hair dryer stopped working. Oh, and I bought a really cute 3D printed vase on Etsy for our bamboo plant, got it all set up, and then discovered it leaks…a lot (plant has to be submerged in water, so this isn’t going to work).

If I go horseback riding as planned with my friend later today (masked, socially distanced and outside at all times), I think I’d better wear a helmet, even though I don’t usually do so.

Well! I mean… of all the rude awakenings… poor Penny dear, I hope you recover soon. You are so gorgeous!

Folks, can I ask the collective mind for some music suggestions? Here’s the project: my step mom turned 80 on Wednesday and we are having a surprise Zoom celebration with family and friends on Sunday. We’ve been having family zoom every Sunday since April so it’s a perfect decoy. I’m in charge of the “this is your life” powerpoint/slide show. I can run it automatically with music, but I can’t choose the song. The obvious choice is Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World, but it’s too short. I’m leaning towards Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole’s combo of Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World – but it also has a tinge of sadness to it. I’ve also considered Pharell’s Happy, and an instrumental version of Rod Steward’s Forever Young – but they’re not perfect either. Anyone have any suggestion? I’m open to anything. 🙂

Hope you all have a wonder day whatever you are doing! ❤️

(And thanks again for the snow Mr. Mike! It’s just lovely)

    • AJ December 5, 2020 / 3:33 pm

How about The Best is Yet to Come – Frank Sinatra or Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun? Both are little more upbeat. Just thought of another couple, I had the time of my life or I did it My Way. And congrats to your Mom on her birthday.

      • Tara December 5, 2020 / 9:30 pm

heeheehee! I’ve got to see how Cyndi Lauper’s would work with it! That’s such a great suggestion. 🙂 Thanks AJ. (don’t know the Franky. S – but will ask the google)

    Happy Caturday, everyone.

Miss Penny, I hope you get over your righteous indignation. Really, Muppet!!! What were you thinking!!!!

Spent the morning in my dye studio, and finally found the best way to use my new Rocketbook smart notebook. I can take notes, scan them with my phone to save in the cloud, and wipe the page to reuse it. Pretty awesome.

Also awesome: my upcoming Quidditch sweater!
    ?v=1606942071
Bought the yarn yesterday and the beads just now. I can’t wait to make it, even if I don’t wear it for a while.

    • AJ December 5, 2020 / 3:18 pm

I’m not a long sleeve sweater person anymore but I WANT!!!! That is gorgeous, and happy knitting. Hmmm maybe I should see if it or something similar comes in a cardigan version.

      • debg December 5, 2020 / 3:35 pm

It’s made in dk-weight yarn, so I will be able to wear it for 3 seasons. In southern California, though, you’d probably not even get 1 season for wearing. You could shorten the sleeves easily, leaving off the snitch motifs, and it would be like a heavy T-shirt. If you want a cardi version, and you’re not comfortable adapting the existing pattern, I can help–reengineering patterns is something I do all the time.

This has been a busy week on the genealogy front. I discovered some 5xgreat-grandparents from Ireland…and a 4xgreat-aunt from Sheffield who, in October 1886, spent a month in Wakefield Prison for “assisting in the management of a brothel”. The prison record also states that she was 28, 5’2″, had black hair and a “W on back of left hand”, presumably a tattoo. From now on I’ll be unable to pass through Sheffield station on the train without thinking of 4xgreat-aunt Ellen! Not that I’ll be travelling by train any time in the near future…

Alice this is such amazing stuff!
