Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the weekend, Cutetropolitans! Our resident guinea pig mom from yesterday, Squiddy, is back with a story about how her cats Bertie and Cheshire are dealing with the cold weather.

Last year when I let the two kitties out in the snow, they loved it and I had to shake the treat bag before they would consent to come inside again. So I was so excited that we were finally getting our first snowfall of the year, so they could play in it joyfully again. It went a little differently this time… (see the video)

They decided sleeping right in front of the fireplace, covered in fluffy blankets was more their style.

(Bertie is back in the cone again, recovering from even more medical mishaps. Β He’s back to his normal crazy self, but has to wear it for a while longer.)

Too cold? The joys of youth now just a distant memory?

That’s more or less my attitude to snow.

Oddly enough we’ve had a couple of days of really mild weather. I recently noticed that there are lots of new shoots appearing on my rose and honeysuckle bushes.

Oh Alice that is just not fair!! 😁
I can’t even see mine yet. But we’re out of that crazy cold snap so YAY.

Snicker, love the reaction – Uhmm, heck to the no. Same way I think of going out in the cold and snow. Only if absolutely necessary. But the kitties are absolutely beautiful, hope Bertie feels better soon.

Even in my 70’s I still love the snow, love to walk out during a snowfall. I am particular about the kind of snow, it has to be powdery. And when I come back in I’d love to be cuddling these two!

I’m 71 and I still love the snow! And each flake is unique!

I like powdery snow. But my favorite is when it is that very crunchy super compactable kind. As a kid I used to see how loud and drawn out I could make that snow crunch sound as I walked on it.

I love snow! It’s even better when I don’t have to drive to work in it! (Retirement rating: 15/10 would retire again) We had snow a week ago, but it’s melted now. Yesterday was almost balmy! All my crocus and hellebores are blooming up a storm. We’ve even had a little sunshine break through this week. Just enough to highlight some snackable toebeans!

Pink jade and opals! Well, that’s how those toebeans look to me!

Nothing visible here – we’ve had snow cover for over 3 weeks in the Philadelphia ‘burbs – had just begun to see parches of earth when this last storm meandered through.

I always think of them as strawberry with chocolate sprinkles… 😻😻😻

Bertie left a boop in the snow!

Cutest nopes ever! Get better, Bertie! Lily, your toebeans are eminently snackable.

I still enjoy snow, from inside the house. Best of all: curling up in front of a heater, with some snuggly kitkats, watching the snow fall gently outside.

Last weekend was so cold, I could barely move off the couch from under a heap of blankets. And I had it so easy compared to the poor folks in Texas! The new space heater for my living room arrived a day early and helped ward off the -18 (F) temps on Sunday.

Now it’s back in the 40s and the snow is quickly disappearing. But I’m still on the couch! Big plans to process fiber for spinning got derailed by a twingey back. I’m trying not to move, waiting for the painkiller to kick in. Then I may just spend the day knitting and spinning, which don’t require moving my arms so vigorously.

Hope you’re all safe, warm, and healthy!

I’m with the kitties. Fireplace sounds much better.

Went to the eye doctor a couple weeks ago, and he said if I wanted to get new glasses he would change the reading part slightly (from 1.25 to 1.5, I think it was) but didn’t say anything about the other parts needing any changes (I have progressives). I didn’t really want to get new glasses unless I needed to, because progressives are expensive, but the last few days I have been having a hard time on the computer, especially. I don’t know if changing the prescription in one part will affect the others, or if I should go back and have him check again before getting new ones…

I’d go back. I got glasses a few months ago and between my exam and getting the glasses there was a material difference. I’m older and eyes seem to change more frequently than in earlier times, but it seems worth having the extra checkup before you spend a wad o’ dough.

I enjoy getting out in the snow, but I also enjoy coming back in and warming up with a cup of tea or cocoa. πŸ˜€ I’m glad our almost 12 inches of snow is gone, but I had some fun while it was here. In particular, I got a really good photo of Maple’s (the deer that was born in our landscaping) fawn. I made these public, so hopefully you’ll be able to view them: https://www.facebook.com/susan.harris.522066/posts/10165032714525088

And another good photo of the “snow waterfalls” that occur when the snow gets too heavy and/or the wind blows and it comes cascading down off of the trees. Usually it’s one or two at a time; this time it was a whole bunch of them, which ended in both me and my camera getting soaked. https://www.facebook.com/susan.harris.522066/posts/10165032857215088

      I loved the snow waterfalls!

I like snow between the 20th of December and the 3rd of January, before that and after that I could happily live without snow.
And now if you’ll excuse me I have to go shovel the driveway.

Just saw the company Ethique, which makes solid shampoo/conditioner and other bath products, has a limited edition Wombar!

❀️❀️❀️❀️❀️ Does it smell like a wombat? That might be a factor in the purchase. Maybe a Scratch and Sniff coupon.

        lol…apparently it’s eucalyptus and lavender.

    Hi All,
Happy Snow Days to us! I’m in the “I love the snow” camp. I missed out on snow days as a kid growing up in So Cal. We got a few earthquake days but never any of the “it’s too hot by 10am days” which, were probably just myth anyway.
Squiddy, your menagerie is wonderful! πŸ₯°I have one house panther who wants out no matter what, and one (former feral) who thinks he wants out but changes his mind very quickly once he sniffs the air.
Lily’s toe beans! There should be a Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Bean made like them. I’m imagining them tasting like rosewater.
Today I treated myself to a new pair of “sneakers.” They are very comfortable, and actually came in the correct size, so I am happy. After sitting around for most of 2020 my feet were already protesting the increased standing and walking. And now that I started teaching again – in person – 😳 – for 5 hours every Wednesday – I really need better foot gear. It’s stressful enough without my feet and knees giving up half way through class.

Stay warm, stay safe and I hope you have a lovely weekend
