Weekend Open Thread

Happy Caturday and welcome to the weekend! Today we have a photo report of the big Easter event at the home of reader Squiddy:

As a holiday treat, I sequestered my kitties in another room and hid 12 kibble-filled eggs all over the house.  It turns out, my cats are not great scent-detectives, but, with a little help, and some ingenuity in getting the snacks out of the narrow eggs, they found them all.  Eventually.

Dear friends, please spare a thought for one of my dearest, bestest friends, whose darling little Yorkie died two days ago, age 15. My little pup-nephew was the reason I decided I wanted a dog of my own, and that led to my adopting Ricky. I am still sorrowing over this loss, and just a few minutes ago I learned (from a newspaper) that an old friend of mine was killed by a car last week. I feel quite lightheaded; I suppose that is what people mean when they talk about “reeling in shock.”

Sorry to start this thread with sadness, but I know you will all understand. Apart from the above, I am fine, and so is Bibi. I am getting my second jab tomorrow, and look forward to moving toward “normal.”

I’m so sorry for your friend, and you. 15 years of love is a long time. And you’ve lost a human friend in a shocking way. More disorientation. A second jab tomorrow will help a bit – I found it had a bucking up effect.

Thank you, I appreciate your kind words and wisdom.

Hugs to you and Bibi, Ricky and Bibi’s Mom!
      I’m sorry for your loss

Hugs to you, and your pup-nephew’s mom. Holding you all in my heart.

    • Georgiana April 10, 2021 / 10:58 am

No wonder you’re feeling lightheaded, that’s lot of bad news to take in such a short time. Sending ghost hug your way.

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom April 10, 2021 / 11:44 am

Thank you all. It means a lot.

I am so sorry for your loss. They just worm their way into our hearts and it’s so hard to let them go. I hope that you can remember the good times and the little moments when your puppy nephew made you smile.

Also I’m so sorry for the loss of your friend. The accident is just a senseless death and I know it doesn’t make it better but I hope that you can remember the good times you had with your friend as well.

Where are my manners? Easter kitties are adorable! Thank for sharing these lovely pictures, Squiddy!

The gorgeous kitteh sniffing the yellow egg seems dubious about this kibble delivery vehicle. It seems they all expect more service from the staff.

    R&B’s Mom

My deepest sympathies for both your losses – that’s a lot of pain to bear.
Glad you’re getting your second jab tomorrow- coincidentally I am, too! Drink lots of water!

And adorably confused kitties are wonderful – I do wonder if now they might think ALL eggs contain kibble!😳

I always love Bertie and Cheshire, but I love them most when they look slightly befuzzled. Thanks for sharing them with us, Squiddy. How’s Bertie doing these days?

Like Ricky&Bibi’s Mom, I’m reeling in shock: yesterday my dad called to tell me he had prostate cancer, which has spread to bones nearby. He has difficulty remembering things, especially words, so it can be tricky to understand what’s really going on unless I talk to someone else too. I’m waiting for my brother to call today; that may clarify the treatment plans and prognosis. But given Dad’s age and his generally poor health, I’m not optimistic.

    • dubravkamcvmd April 10, 2021 / 10:55 am

Oh no. Shock, pain, and uncertainty/confusion. I hope your brother can clarify the situation for you quickly. Sending you support from afar.

    • Emsthemonster April 10, 2021 / 11:00 am

Hugs to you, Debg! I wish you lots of strength to cope with whatever news may come.

    • Georgiana April 10, 2021 / 11:33 am

Oh no! I’m so sorry, it’s so hard when a parent is gravely hill, you can feel so powerless. I do hope your brother can give you some reassuring news.

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom April 10, 2021 / 11:41 am

Debg, I can’t imagine what you are going through. My best wishes to you and your family. I hope your brother will be in touch soon; waiting to hear more is a special stressor all of its own kind. I’m so very sorry you have to go through this.

    • fkaWaldenPond April 10, 2021 / 7:11 pm

      Thinking of you Deb.

    • Kar April 11, 2021 / 1:22 am

      I”m so sorry,

my father is deteriorating as well, it makes me just want to cry when he yells and you cant reason with him.

I’m hoping that you and your brother can help him to be comfortable mentally and physically, whatever the prognosis.

      • dubravkamcvmd April 11, 2021 / 8:33 am

I’m sorry. My mother had dementia so I immediately thought when I read that your father yells and you can’t reason with him that dementia was part of the problem. That is very tough I know.

Hugs and love to everyone, including the befuddled kitties.

Egg and Ricky& Bibi’s Mom, oh so sorry to hear your ad news. It’s a lot to take in, try to remember to take a few deep breaths and to be kind to yourself.

Looks like kitties had a lot of fun with this new adventure. But at the same time somewhat puzzled by the whole thing.

Got my 2nd jab Wed and aside from from general blahs or malaise and tiredness over the next two days, I was fine. I think the worst was the overall aches but I find any reaction to meds or jabs settles in my bones so I took some anti-inflamatories and was fine the next day.

Off to breakfast and run some errands today. If I feel up to it, will do some cleaning later. Also need to plan next week’s menus and grocery list.

  8. Georgiana April 10, 2021 / 11:38 am

I’m sad to hear all the bad news from people today. My troubles seem so puny compared to what other people’s are going through.

I did see my orthopedist on Tuesday for my finger, he gave me an injection and then manually forced it open. Yes it hurt, a lot.

My finger is still stiff and I seem to be having a localized allergic reaction to whatever he injected me with this time, I don’t think it was the usual cortisone. The palm of my hand got really itchy and red and a little bit swollen, I’m taking Reactine™ and it’s getting better.

On a more cheerful note, we have been having a preview of summer for the last week, it’s been very warm and sunny and I’ve been taking long walks every day.

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom April 10, 2021 / 11:43 am

Pain is pain, Georgiana. However small your troubles may seem to you in comparison, they are genuine. And allergic reactions are no fun, either. I hope you feel better soon, and that your finger starts behaving itself properly.

    • Debg April 10, 2021 / 12:21 pm

So sorry there wasn’t instant relief for your finger, Georgiana. Sending big hugs and purrs your way that the hand feels better soon.

      • Dulcie April 10, 2021 / 3:19 pm

Ouch Georgiana! Hope it gets better soon! Hard to believe sometime when you have such a drastic treatment!

    • Kar April 11, 2021 / 1:24 am

Allergic reactions are scary. I hope that the Reactine’s making a difference. My mother keeps bugging me to get a medic alert button for my allergies and I’m kind of caving in.

  9. Dulcie April 10, 2021 / 3:11 pm

Oh my, R and B’s mom. Such a painful couple of events. I thought it was so nice that you opened up to our little community like you did. I don’t think anyone here would resent your outpouring of emotion. We are the kind of people who will shoulder some of that sadness!!
    Hugs 💕💕

And DebG that is also some very tough and painful news. We’re having quite a time of things here this week. Hugs to you as well. 💕💕

Um…I don’t know what happened there…but it won’t let me delete it.

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom April 10, 2021 / 5:57 pm

We’ll just think of it as a peaceful period in the midst of a time of stress.

        • allein 🐾 April 10, 2021 / 6:07 pm

I can go with that. I went back to sleep this morning and next thing I knew it was 4pm.

Peace and healing to you Cutetropolitans who are enduring pain and loss. I’m glad that most, if not all, of us have furkids/featherkids/scalekids to help us through the rough times. Still, ghost hugs and cyberhugs are being sent your way for reinforcements.

Easter kitties are gorgeous, and that is a great way to enrich their lives, even if they have less-than-spectacular sniffing powers.
