The Goose Patrol!

Cutetropolis reader Dana D. spent some time in nature and came back with a special treat: Not just a family of geese, but an entire goose daycare out on patrol, with multiple adults keeping the little ones in line.

These videos are from my current trip upstate NY while visiting a nature preserve. I’ve seen plenty of adult Canada geese the past few days but this morning I came upon a large family right by a walking trail. I didn’t want to scare them (or be attacked!) so I stayed back and watched them for about 30 minutes while one of the adults gave me the evil eye. I was the only human around so it was quiet and charming. Eventually, it was time for them to move on which I was lucky enough to capture.

Thanks for posting, Mike, these darlings were so wonderful to watch!

Ironically, fellow cute watchers, I have a bird “situation” I need help with!

I live in an apt in NYC and sparrows are building a nest underneath my bedroom window AC unit (I keep the unit in year-round because I’m in a small apt with no storage space). It doesn’t bother me but I’m worried that when I need to turn this on (next month?) the vibration will send a nest full of babies plummeting to the ground. Or the noise will drive the parents away abandoning the babies. I’m on the second floor so I can’t get a good look at it from the ground, I can only see some twigs and stuff by pressing my face to the window looking down or opening my living room window and looking out. I’m pretty sure my landlord (I don’t have a super) will not care or his fix will be to get up on a ladder and just remove it (destroying the nest). Since I can’t really see the nest I have no idea if any eggs are there yet. I only have one window in my bedroom so I can’t move the AC and can’t sleep if it’s hot.

    Any ideas?

I live in NYC too. I had a problem with a pigeon nest on the ledge of a window in the back of an office building. I found bird rescuer sites on line who explained to me that unfortunately ….However, the point of the story is that there are all kinds of bird rescue groups in the city. Someone might have an idea or resource. Maybe try Audubon NYC to start and see if they have any ideas of who could help.

The geese are great. Is it two couples out with their kids?

Thanks, I’ll try Audobon. I’m not sure if it was 2 geese couples, but sure looks like it! Either way, they had a lot of babies.

Yes, I counted 11 or 12 babies. So cute! And the parents look so dignified. They are beautiful creatures, even if they can make a dreadful mess with their droppings!

Bebeh gooses! So cute! One thing I miss about my old route to work is the pond I passed where there would be baby geese and ducks in the spring.

I love the scurrying little feetsies on the wee balls of fluff! 💕
