Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the weekend! Today reader Tara O. and Jacques share a story that shows how one man’s trash is another cat’s treasure:

My 82-year-old retired Neighbor, does property clean outs for extra cash. He never liked cats until he met my Jacques, mostly because Jacques “speaks” to him. When my neighbor says, “Hello Jack,” Jacques answers politely. We’ve lived next to each other 13 years, Neighbor still can’t get over it. A few days ago Neighbor came home with this pink cloth basket for Cat toys (you can see the ‘toys’ at the bottom) he gave it to me and said, maybe you could use it for the extra toys?

Excuse me, does it say “toys” on the box?

Jacques had other ideas. I didn’t have time to put a toy in it before Jacques moved in. Here are two pictures of his “new” bed.

I do believe it says “CAT” in big letters.

I’d go with Jacques’ interpretation of the labeling. His intelligent expression and calm self-possession are convincing to me anyway.

Such a sweet story! I love it when humans make an animal connection that is unexpected.😉 If no animals like you that is a baaaaaaad situation! If even one animal bonds with you then you are okay in my book! And Jacques looks like he knows what’s what!😊

School is almost out! 2 more days! 🌈✨Yippeee!!💫💦

Jacques is absolutely right, it does say CAT not TOYS.

Blue skies here and it’s not too hot and not too cold, so I’ll be outside all day but I wanted to stop by to say hello and wish everyone a good weekend!

I see CAT. Toys is in smaller print below it. Clearly that means it is a secondary suggestion in case the cat is not interested.

Rainy Caturday here in New Jersey. Raining lightly right now but we got a few good downpours last night and early this morning. No plans to speak of. Need to finish my book and wash the berries and stuff I got yesterday. Also got apricots! And my town was mentioned in a Jeopardy clue last night!

      That’s an evil duck.

Ducks are the ultimate all terrain vehicle.

Yes but they don’t have to GLOAT.

Jacques is correct, it is clearly a TOY for CATS made by a manufacturer of Cat Toys.

It’s Saturday, the sun is out, and restrictions are lifting.
Good morning, Jacques. You are very handsome.
Week went relatively ok, except for Wednesday night. Duckie had a night fright and woke us up thrashing around in her cage. It took both of us half an hour to calm her down, and then I plugged in a short string of Christmas lights near the cage before we left her. She didn’t go back to her usual sleep spot, but she was quiet. And hubby and I were awake for the rest of the night, just in case.
She’s fine now, but I have a permanent night light set up for her.
Planning a family BBQ in July to celebrate the ending of COVID and we’re going to include ALL the family celebrations we’ve missed in the last 18 months. 50th wedding anniversary, 50th birthday, First Communions, Confirmations, graduations, regular birthdays and anniversaries, an engagement, two promotions, raises and POSSIBLY the family being reunited once more. Not to mention Christmases, Easters and New Years. We are all looking forward to it.
We may even invite the SWAT team, since they’ll probably be called in anyway.
Health is bad right now, but I don’t care. I’m in a good mood, and things are looking up.
    Allein, love the comic.
    Have a great day, everyone.

      The BBQ sounds WONDERFUL!

    • Kar May 29, 2021 / 6:15 pm

That sounds like an awesome idea.

    Happy Caturday, everyone!

Jacques is gorgeous and very smart. I love his conversations with your neighbor, Tara! Also this is why I’ve never tried putting all the cat toys in a basket–said basket would become a bed. I just vacuum around them.

I’ve spent the past week and my staycation weekend doing lovely things: weaving, reconnecting with former students, planning Facetime visits with friends and family. Believe it or not, a former student actually emailed to thank me for writing a recommendation a few years back–he was headed to law school and a master’s in historic preservation after a long break from undergrad. Now he’s got the JD and will finish his MA next year. Another dear student wrote me about the books he’s re-reading from my class. These moments remind me that I did something good in my teaching years.

Now it’s time to get off my tuchus and start a new weaving! “Between projects” for a weaver means the loom has no warp. That’s just sad.

Hope all my fellow Americans are enjoying the long weekend, and that everybody else is staying safe. We all sound pretty upbeat, I must say. And that’s fantastic.

I’ve been on vacation since Wednesday! Will go to my parents’ for dinner on Monday. But I will be going back to a looong list of things to do next week…it’s a closing week (first week of the fiscal month) and a short week because of the holiday plus lots of audit requests because our fiscal year just ended on May 1st. So I might log in for a bit tomorrow and knock out some of the easy reports that I can do while watching youtube videos so I can have them ready to send.

I love Jacques and his certain je ne sais quoi. And yes it does say cat on the basket and of course he fits so he sits.

Just got back from 2 scorching hot weeks in Yuma, and so glad to be cooler in 60-70 degree weather. We’re having some overcast with mist this morning. So far have done a morning cruise with the car club and later have errands and house stuff to do. Tomorrow looking at two houses we might be interested in putting in an offer. And Monday is up in the air. If it’s nice weather, I’ll probably get all the patio furniture out and set up then have a bbq with some friends.

I love the thought of your family reunion Duckie, the line about the SWAT team had me chuckling. I think you are the one that said there was some major family drama going on so yeah, it might be good to have them on stand-by.

    Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Finally…after weeks of wet, miserable weather it’s warm and sunny in Yorkshire. My neighbours are obviously expecting great things of the weekend as they’ve set up a hammock and barbecue in a backyard so small you can barely turn round in it!

Since we are both doubly vaccinated and therefore pullulating with antibodies I took Dad to the local park this morning. A narrow path round the pond is still closed off but otherwise it’s business as usual. Spring plants are being replaced with summer plants, and the tradition of displaying wickerwork figures in the formal garden is back after a year’s absence. This year’s theme is “Alice in Wonderland”, with the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, the Hookah Caterpillar, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and the head of the Cheshire Cat.

In other news, one of the two rose bushes at the bottom of my garden is going berserk and the honeysuckle next to it has reached the top of the garden wall and looks set to colonize next door. I’m thinking of buying some fairy lights to trail along the fence, possibly followed by a pond, a gazebo, and a maze…

Good to hear your garden is estate size! More flowers than expected is great! I was expected at my sister’s to do weeding (a specialty of mine as I don’t know how to do anything else in a garden), but the weather in NYC is cold and rainy. Next weekend!

Hi All! Hee hee! I’m cracking up over the ‘CAT vs toy’ debate! Thank you for all your kind words about Jacques, I will pass them along to him.

My wonderful but rough and gruff Neighbor grew up on a farm in a different time and has a different relationship to animals. They all have jobs and are not for cuddling. But the fact that Jacques actually replies and comes over to Neighbor for a scritch, makes him so happy every time. Jacques is not one of those cats who goes to everyone either, he’s particular.

6 rabbits 2 days! yay! I turned grades in yesterday – woohoo!

Duckie so happy for your happy plans! I’ve been given the green light to fly home and see my family. I will get to see my dad on Father’s Day for the first time in 17 years. I’m so grateful we all came through this and I’m really looking forward to going home.

And Alice, thanks for the work of the day: pullulation. Fabulous. 🥰

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
