Weekend Open Thread

Teller is back to welcome us to another Caturday. Teller is one of those cats who likes to headbutt when he wants pets, says sender-inner Muppet2171.

cat
Oh, you ARE getting headbutted.

BONUS! A while ago, reader Tracy R. showed off her new catio for her cat Hamster. “This is Hamster evaluating the new water feature on his catio and finding it, unfortunately, rather wet for his taste. He prefers a nice dry water feature.”

What a gorgeous picture of the gorgeous Teller. I love Hamster’s careful examination of the noise and motion, only to discover that -Yuk! – wet!

  2. AJ July 17, 2021 / 10:12 am

Such gorgeous kitties to welcome us to Sat! Teller you can can come head butt me all you want. Tracy, I now have to up my catio game. I thought the one I set up for Pebbles and Bam Bam were nice but yours is fantastic. Plus an all you can drink feature, lol. Right now Hamster finds it too wet but he might just figure out the benefits.

Lots of running around today. Lab work for hubby, return a book to the library, and pick up some barstools from the auction house. Now I can ignore the chair re-upholstering project for a little longer, lol. Or I just might pay someone to do it. I’m finding I have no patience anymore to do these home improvement jobs. I think I get overwhelmed and just need to break it down into smaller steps. Do one thing in the morning, then take a break, something else later on, and repeat til done.

Hope our friends overseas are ok, and staying dry. Wish you could send some of that water here. They’re predicting a severe drought and fire season here in SoCal.

How big is the chair? I’ve done a fair amount of reupholstering, and you’re absolutely right about breaking a large project into smaller chunks.

      • AJ July 17, 2021 / 4:14 pm

it’s not too big, a bar stool. Square seat and small back. But I have to take everything apart , replace the cushioning, put the new fabric on and staple, then put the chair together again. Then repeat for the other two.

Teller is gorgeous as always, my cat Beans would love a catio with a water feature to drink from and play with, she is forever asking for the faucet in the bathroom sink to be turned on for her and of course we comply.

Not much going on here this weekend, I’m still suffering from the heat and I finally got fed up yesterday and went and bought a second Uberhaus metal pedestal fan for the kitchen.
I already have one in the living room and it’s great, maybe a little noisy on the higher setting but worth it for the cooling breeze you can feel from across the room.

Stupid me had tried to save money and bought a cheaper brand for the kitchen but it was almost useless, from 2 feet away you couldn’t feel any wind at all. Well as my father always said, you get what you pay for.

I have to go out later to get cat food and some odds and ends but otherwise it’s going to be a quiet weekend. Hope everyone is healthy and safe.

Every time I try to economize on necessary equipment, I end up regretting it. Good luck with the heat.

Teller is, as always!, adorable.💙 I get “nose butts” from my bunny for attention, or whatever.
I love Hamster’s fountain! Like AJ said, I think he’ll get used to it, he’s just at the “what the heck” stage!

offers virtual pets to Teller, sympathizes with Hamster over the excessive wetness of water

Not much to report from the Shortcakery, save that the “courtyard garden” (as the estate estate referred to the glorified path at the rear of the house) is looking rather nice at the moment now most of the plants are in bloom. Plus, I’ve managed to write another poem for my Shakespeare anthology – this time inspired by ‘Othello’ – without losing track of time and missing something important, as I did so disastrously last week!

      • Debg July 17, 2021 / 11:16 am

Genius burns when it must, Alice.

        How’s your dad doing?

        • Alice Shortcake July 17, 2021 / 12:30 pm

Not too well, I’m afraid. Mentally and physically he’s really deteriorated over the past year or so. A big problem is that he’s constantly exhausted because he gets very little sleep, but due to his breathing problems it’s dangerous for him to take sleeping pills. Still, he has a few pleasures in life – two or three times a week I take him to the local park in his wheelchair.

          • Debg July 17, 2021 / 12:48 pm

It sounds like our dads are in similar boats. Hope you’re taking care of yourself as well as taking care of him.

            • Dulcie July 17, 2021 / 2:20 pm

Such a difficult time in our lives Alice isn’t it? I remember the constant internal conflict I had with my aging parents. You hate to see them failing but damned if you want to be parted from them. 🙏 💕

Happy Caturday, everybody! Teller can head-butt me anytime–I always love those. And Hamster! Tracy, why didn’t you get some dry water? Srsly?

Today my schedule has to accommodate early dinner with friends, which means all my routines are upset. It’s worth it, but it’s always so hard for me to adjust mentally. Giant tail-less cat, remember? So doing chores and laundry first, hopefully warping my loom, then working out and showering, then early dinner. IOW a typical Saturday but with stuff out of order.

I’ve also been wrassling with weird car paperwork stuff. When I refinanced my auto loan, my intermediary mentioned that the new lender was old-fashioned. That’s an understatement. Their “final notice” warning letters filled me with dread–they took a while to reach me, then warned that if I didn’t supply insurance paperwork, they would buy additional, very expensive coverage. I used their website to said paperwork. But confirmation emails from this site kept telling me that they still needed more info (without specifying what it was), and then provided the wrong number for me to call. It required a long phone call to sort everything out, once I found the right number.

As part of that process, I discovered that somehow, somewhere an official body–DMV, maybe?–got my home address completely wrong. Last year, I never renewed the registration. When I discovered this little oopsie in April, I thought Alzheimer’s was setting in early. Now I realize that they never sent the notice! I never got one for this year either! So I went online and managed to get everything set up, but they may well mail the tags to this incorrect address.

All these things happened earlier in the week. Today, I tried to update my address with the DMV, though noting it as an address change could screw up other things. However, my verified address has the wrong zip code. This has been a problem ever since I moved to this house in 2015. There’s no info on the USPS website to tell me how to fix it.

I do not want to spend time at the post office this morning, when the lines will be really long. I really don’t want to spend time at the DMV, wrangling over my correct address. But I also don’t want my vehicle tags to get lost in the mail. Arggggg.

OH NO! These are the kinds of problems that cause me to despair. I calm myself by going over my ability to continue having a roof over my head, food in my stomach, and clothes on my back, plus having health insurance.

      • Debg July 17, 2021 / 12:23 pm

Thank you for this much-needed perspective! You’re absolutely right.

On a happier note, I managed to fix my vacuum cleaner, so now I don’t have to shell out money for a new one. Plus I got to vacuum. After a week of mess, that was actually a thrill.

Car stuff sucks. At least my license plates got sent to the dealer and I just had to go and sign for them and they put them on for me.

I keep getting letters and cards and texts and emails from various Hyundai dealers (the texts are at least only from the dealer I actually bought my car from, so them texting me is annoying but at least they don’t seem to be sharing my number with others), wanting to buy my car back (lately they say because of the chip shortage, but I was getting these things long before that) and offering some amount above the blue book value and to put me in a new car (at employee discount price, according to the card I got the other day from a dealer at least an hour and a half away). My car will be paid off before the end of the year and I have zero interest in picking up a new car payment, thank you. I plan to redirect my current car payment (or at least some portion of it; I’ve been paying $500 a month for a while just to pay it off quicker, but that’s slightly more than double my actual payment) to my mortgage.

My favorites have been the one that referenced wanting to buy out the lease on my Elantra GT, which was two cars ago (though I sometimes wish I had kept it), and the one wanting to buy out the lease on my 2018 Elantra, which is my current car, at least, but is not leased.

      • Debg July 17, 2021 / 12:20 pm

I keep getting requests to buy back my old Elantra too. Seriously, Hyundai????

        • Dulcie July 17, 2021 / 12:48 pm

Shortage of vehicles on this continent. Not great for consumers but awesome for the environment right?

    • Debg July 17, 2021 / 12:24 pm

Ded. Just ded. Look at that face.

    • 6rabbits July 17, 2021 / 5:54 pm

I LOVE this dog and saved her cute face to my photos the minute I saw it!😊

    • dubravkamcvmd July 17, 2021 / 12:01 pm

Thanks! I’ll get over there when it’s less than a million degrees out. It’s walking distance.

      • allein 🐾 July 17, 2021 / 12:19 pm

Cool! It looks like fun! Not “get on a train into the city from NJ” fun, but fun nonetheless. 😉

    • Debg July 17, 2021 / 12:25 pm

Wish I could go! I love that kind of lemons-into-lemonade approach to construction eyesores.

    • Georgiana July 17, 2021 / 3:06 pm

      What a great idea!

  6. Tara July 17, 2021 / 12:13 pm

Kitty head butts are the best! Butch is really good at them. Jacques and Swee’Pea not so much. None of them have as fancy a water feature as Hamster does – and I’m not telling them! They’ll have to continue to make do with the rain bucket.

    Happy weekend all!

    • Debg July 17, 2021 / 12:26 pm

“When I was your age, all I had was a rain bucket!”

  7. Dulcie July 17, 2021 / 12:51 pm

Teller and Hamster AND Maisie the Caturday dog in one post. Excellent!
    Have a good weekend all!

    • 6rabbits July 17, 2021 / 5:56 pm

      👍🏼♥️☺️

  8. Dulcie July 17, 2021 / 1:47 pm

Hey Murkle46…looks like we’re both on the same wavelength lol. 🤣

  9. Carlotta July 17, 2021 / 2:36 pm

Thanks for the pupper, Allein! I need some serious cheering up and calming down, right now. I went to get clothes out of the back room to launder and saw sunlight pouring through the ceiling! I screamed some words I don’t usually say. Husband is off to get a large tarp. At least it isn’t supposed to rain before tomorrow. There, I think I’ve about stopped shaking!

    • Georgiana July 17, 2021 / 3:11 pm

Well that’s no fun at all, I hope the roof gets fixed without too much trouble.

    • 6rabbits July 17, 2021 / 5:56 pm

      😳

  10. Dulcie July 17, 2021 / 4:15 pm

    Carlotta OMG!!! 🤯😲💩

Teller loves head-butting my hair clip when I’m on the sofa. Then he does the “this is mine” face rub on it, effectively yanking my head back. He does this repeatedly until I reach up to pet him. Also if I stop before he’s ready. 🙄
