Tech’ed in the Head

Oh, that guy? He’s been working here a couple of years. Total burnout. I’ve seen it all before — they come into the Tech Support department wide-eyed, eager to help people. Then they meet the people. First there was the user who wanted to know how to draw the circle around the “a” in his email address. Then one who wanted to know if her new mouse pad was compatible with her computer. Finally the person who edited a document using correction fluid on the screen. After that he just snapped. Just stands there in that silly hat muttering to himself.

Have you tried turning me off and then on again? (Reddit)

This little furball would be a big improvement over the IT techs at my office. And, not just ’cause he’s cute.

I once actually heard one of the help desk guys ask someone on the phone if they’d tried turning it off and on again. And I always thought it was just a joke.

I like the googly eyes on the monitor, too.

Kitty should come hang with me. It’s nice and quiet this afternoon.

Turning it on and off again is not just a joke!!!!! Though it is funny and makes a great punchline.

I’ve done tech support and totally understand where this kitty is coming from.

Love how the hat has kitten ears.

I can become the world’s biggest tech challenged person in the world just so I can have this little one be my personal IT tech and sit on my desk all day.

I used to have a colleague who put in hard returns at the end of every line of text.

    On her computer.

Wait – you donโ€™t use correction fluid? Ohhhhhhh!

I was the unofficial tech support at the office, the one people came to before having to waist 20 minutes waiting on the phone before they could speak to the IT department.
The questions or problems my colleagues had were maybe not as funny as those in Mike’s story but sometimes they came close and I had to work hard to keep a trait face.

In my last office I was the unofficial IT help, too. It was pretty easy — they just needed super-easy answers most of the time. And as for the turning off and back on again, my husband has been in IT since forever, and when I need his help with my computer or the DVR or something, that is always the first question he asks. Because that’s the answer about 90% of the time! And he’s always right, too! But I would never turn that adorable kitty off — it’s far too cute!

My coworkers ask me stuff all the time. I usually just google it. They still think I’m some kind of tech genius. ๐Ÿ™„

I put together a guide to keyboard options for Word, to avoid mousing all the time (which I still hate, it’s so SLOW), and all my friends thought I was some kind of genius! Nope, just lazy. It’s faster to not take your hands off the keyboard to get something done than to move off elsewhere and then have to move it back!

It drives me crazy when I’m trying to help someone do something and they’re right-clicking and then selecting from popup lists for everything. The Ctrl key is there for a reason!!!

          • Laura July 23, 2021 / 4:31 pm

Someone after my own heart! There are keyboard ways to do EVERYTHING. Whoever invented the mouse did the world a real disservice! Leave the rodents for the kitties to chase!

I, on the other hand, could never remember most of the keyboard commands and had to do it the long way around!

              • Laura July 23, 2021 / 7:34 pm

I made a quick reference cheat sheet, with only the top 25-30 most frequently used commands to help me remember them. If it’s something I only do once a year, there’s no point in trying to remember it. I’m lazy, like I said; put the things I need and use in my short-term memory, and then look up the stuff I forgot if it ever comes up again.

I told my hubby that I’d told you guys about him telling me to turn something off then back on, and he looked smugly at me and said, “And just how often does it work? At least 85%, right?” So he’s happy now because he’s right. Sigh….

I use the most common ones (copy/cut/paste/etc.), still use my mouse plenty, though. I also use the quick access toolbars in MS Office, so I know the alt codes for a few that I use most often, but those depend on where in the bar they are, so they will be different for everyone. I also have a custom macro that is assigned to the Q key to do Paste Special-Text in excel, so I can paste stuff from Access into reports without screwing up the formatting.

Can kitty come over here and help with my computer problems? Stick a fork in me I’m done. Found out that a vital folder I use on the network drive might have been accidentally deleted. By our Finance Manager no less. Then there’s supposed to be an on-line form for us to use when we need tech support and I couldn’t find it. So I resorted to the old fashioned way and reached out to our IT tech via email. So far no responses. I think I’m done for the week, it’s only 10 minutes to quitting time so I’m clocking out and hoping Monday is better. Time to go lie on the couch with a cold compress and a stiff drink.

Isn’t it fun when someone else screws your work up? I’ve been where you are; years ago, when everyone booted up their computer with a c: prompt, I came to work one morning and someone had wiped my whole computer. From the stupid C prompt. It had to be completely reloaded. I still shudder when I remember how much extra work that made me do!

So your decision sounds like the perfect choice to me. Maybe crazy kitty will come in over the weekend and everything will be all fixed. You never know!

“First there was the user who wanted to know how to draw the circle around the โ€œaโ€ in his email address.”

I needed the very good laugh I got out of this line.

Poor kitty, my tech skills may only be a wee bit better than trying to circle my “a”s, but I promise that even if I ask you stupid tech questions, I will give you tuna to make up for them.
