Readers, we have a special treat today, because reader Debg has shared photos of her pet project: Taming a group of feral kittens in her neighborhood.
Mike, I thought everybody might like to see the kittens I’ve been trying to tame. There are three black kittens and one grey tabby, who was too shy to come over last night.
Urrmph… 
Base, do you read me?

The black kittens try to sneak up on the food dish–they climb the fence, jump down, then crawl indirectly over to it.
Should I worry about the lady with the camera? 
Naaaaah…
They take the long way around where I can’t see them (they think). Then they casually lounge nearby until they decide it’s okay to start eating. It’s like an episode of Mission Impossible. If I move, they dart away.

So happy to see some progress. And I was glued to my seat during the scroll down to see how everything would turn out. Such cuties too, look like my long departed Shadow – all black; toes, nose, whiskers – thank goodness for gold eyes or I’d never find him.

Even if he was hanging off a plane with kittens in every pocket? And draped around his neck? And nestled in his pant cuff?
Even if he was jumping on a white couch with his shoes on. Absolutely better than Tom Cruise hanging off a plane, on a wire, whatever.

My babies! They’re famous on the Internet!
Cloudburst, the grey tabby who looks like mom, now comes over too. They’re very shy, however, and nervous about getting too close to me. The biggest panther likes to bat at the wand and the other night actually sniffed my finger. No petpets, but I keep moving the food dish closer to me, just a few inches each evening. I usually spend about 20 minutes per evening, sitting there while they try to work up their courage.

Hope with time, these kitties will become more trusting and come up to you. Then maybe, you’ll have a chance to pet them. Your own, animal reality show, all real and no scripted drama.

What beautiful kitties! You can tell that although they’re feral, they have a person looking after tbem — their gleaming coats and gorgeous eyes that are not goopy at all! Thanks for sharing the nightly drama, too. If you can tame them enough, do you plan to keep any of them, or will you find other homes for them?
I’m not keeping anybody. If I can get them trapped in my Have-a-heart, they’re going to the Humane Society for more socialization and then, hopefully, adoption.
