Love the hot dogs who just run across the starting blocks. I think they were looking for snacks. And the one who just…didn’t.
Was not expecting Maymo and Penny in the story about a Japanese cat!
Cow whisperer needs to be in the Men of Cutetropolis calendar. He’s cute. 😍
Met a dog walker in Central Park a few weeks ago who was astonished that I recognized her charge as a lemon beagle. Had to tell her about Maymo and Penny. 🙂
Wow, that sable is quite hyper! Fortunately they have a loving mom.
Speaking of hyper, the 4 kittens are now at the Humane Society (a no-kill shelter). I fear that I severely traumatized them and ruined any trust we built up over the last few months. Caught 3 of them on Sunday and put them in my bathroom, intending to take them to the shelter on Monday. But I left work too late and couldn’t get there before closing time; then the 4th one was in the humane trap.
So Monday night, everybody stayed in the bathroom. I unzipped carriers so they could get some food (there was water in the carriers for them). Remember when Gilderoy Lockhart released a cage full of Cornish pixies in DADA? It was like that, only with the possibility that the kittens could hurt themselves. When I opened the door on Tuesday morning, all 4 were huddled in the same carrier. I didn’t want them roaming the bathroom while I was at work, so I just zipped it closed. And I left work much earlier, so we could make it to the shelter on time.
I really botched this. If I’m going to do any more cat rescue, I need a better set-up: a crate where they can be confined; an empty room; something. And these little ones may not ever trust humans again. Please send out good thoughts for them, that they can be socialized for adoption.
I’m sorry this experience was so upsetting for you. I’ll bet the kittens get over it quickly.
You did good by catching them and bringing them to the Humane Society. I’m sure the kitten will get over their fright and become much loved family members.
Debg, you may have caused a little inconvenience to the kittens, but this is far from traumatising them. No worries, all is well.
I am sure you haven’t scarred them for life. My first week with my own kittens (way back when) scarred me, but the kittens were fine.
You’ve just had a little hitch, and now you know more about what to do for next time. If you want some comforting inspiration, try reading some of the earliest posts on https://www.love-and-hisses.com, and then read some of the more recent ones. Robyn is taking a blog break this week, and just reposting her social media stuff, but there are plenty of posts from the last few years that contrast quite a lot with the first year.
I also find https://www.kittenlady.org amazing (even though I don’t have cats anymore, I’m still interested). She has a YouTube channel which may also be helpful. This video should show you that you’re not alone …
I suspect that nothing that happened in that bathroom is anywhere as traumatizing as life on the streets.
Now they’re somewhere safe where they’ll be cared for and I’m sure even the little one will come to trust a loving human who regularly feeds and cuddles them.
Oh no DebG, it’s so traumatizing when you are worried about traumatizing fuzzy critters. I feel you! Lot’s of hugs. I also have faith in the resilience of animals and patience in humans who make it their mission to aclimate fur-babies. You did such a good thing by taking them to the Humane Society. They are young and will get over it, they will survive, and they will make someone a wonderful pet. Look at your dear Scorpius – totally traumatized, but you’ve kept him 🙂 Lucky boy. This will work out too. I have faith.
Thanks, everybody, for your support. I’m sure you’re right about the talents of the shelter staff, and I’ll try to stop worrying about those adorable furballs. Kitties do bounce back, as you say.
Not surprised to see the Doxie race event was sponsored by Samuel Adams Beer- who doesn’t like Hot Dogs and Beer?
Me? Unless it’s root beer. I’ll take the running, barking hot dogs but not a big fan of the food version. When I was a kid there was only one kind I’d eat and I haven’t had one in years.
My dad used to call hot dogs “tube steaks” or “pigeon lips.” Then he was shocked that I didn’t want to eat them. (I also dislike beer.)
But the doxies are adorable.
Me. Can’t stand beer, except ginger beer. Which, come to think of it, would go very nicely with a Noo Yawk Dirty Water Dog.
Are we sure that black cat isn’t part squirrel?
Peeps, not doing so good. Went to emergency yesterday because I couldn’t wait to see the doctor. My ankles are (gross out) ulcerated from the Wegener’s. This is apparently part of it, but I’m a bit scared that it means my meds no longer work. Emerge didn’t do anything except test for blood infection, and then sent me home. I see the specialist tomorrow.
Also, one of the two anti-vaxer households in my family are in quarantine for COVID.
Upsetting news. Try not to think the worst before you see the specialist. Let us know what the result is.
Sending hugs and healing purrs your way. We’re all holding you in our hearts.
Duckie, Kitten Mitsi (who is almost adult size now) is sending healing purrs and soft kitty kisses to you. I hope you get better soon!
Duckie, I know it’s easier said than done, but try not to catastrophize. Take things an hour at a time, or a minute at a time if you have to. Worrying is completely natural (I should know, I have a degree in it), but it doesn’t actually help (I should know, it has never helped me).
Bibi and I are sending you healing thoughts and puppy kisses, and best wishes for a specialist with a good bedside manner and some helpful meds/advice.
Sorry to hear about your anti-vaxxer family members, but you have enough on your plate. Let them handle their own madness.
At least no one’s panicking and keeping you over night rather than in ICU on a drip. Also glad that you can see the specialist tomorrow.
I know it’s hard but let’s stay positive.
I can’t tell if that Moustache Farmer should have his own show on Animal Planet or go on the cover of Men’s Health.
Why not both? He’s just delightful. You can see how much those critters love him in the photos.
People, thanks again for all your encouragement, support, and advice. I really appreciate it! I’ll call the shelter tomorrow to see how kittens are doing. And wish me luck catching Cloud! She can reach through the trap to get food on her paw–too smart to climb in!
Duckie, sending more good thoughts your way.
Buttons and her G-bro, wiener dog races, a cow whisperer, and kittens made the day much brighter.
