Fig Twotons

A fig tree provides a fig treat for the trunksters at the Elephant Nature Park. Just watch these pachyderms pack ’em away!

OK I love how the trunksters can’t wait to get the figs and grabs them from the tray but what I really found interesting was how the figs actually grow on the tree. They seem to grow directly on the trunk not hanging from the branches like other fruit like apples or cherries. Fascinating!

I just googled pictures of figs on trees…some of them seem to grow in clusters attached the trunk; others do hang from branches but have pretty short stems.

I feel like heffalumps eating fruit that size is like us eating little Jelly Belly jellybeans.

I feel like this is some ancient fable, the elephants and the fig tree:

The moral? Wait until someone else harvests the figs for your snacking convenience.

OMG the tail-wagging! I had no idea heffalumps swished their tails when they’re happy. Stands to reason.

Also the impatient one at the beginning!!!!

Figs don’t flower like regular fruit trees but depend on a specific wasp which somehow manages to pollinate and the fruit just begins to swell. It’s amazing to me. Trouble is bees, ants, and squirrels get to the fruit before I do!
