Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the Caturday open thread, where you can talk about whatever you wanna. But if you’re stuck for a topic, consider this: Sometimes it takes a cat to uncover the true purpose of a thing, as reader Tracy R. recently discovered…

So last summer, Hamster met the fountain and didn’t care for it; we moved it onto the porch for the winter, and Hamster has made friends with it (now that that pesky water is gone) and wants to know if it’s spring yet. Hamster would also like to send his love and support to all Ukrainian animals out there.

    Definitely cat logic!
    Hamster is beautiful as usual!

Oh boy – I want to boop those snoots!

    • Debg March 12, 2022 / 9:46 pm

Love the danger kittens. Especially the purring ones. I once got to pet a Florida panther and will never forget that experience.

Handsome Hamster as usual, and the fountain does look like a particularly sturdy cat tree. Now that he’s made friends with it, maybe it turned on with water might not be so scary this year. And your porch looks so comfy!

Had my new stove and dishwasher installed earlier this week and it’s so nice to have shiny working appliances. Cats weren’t too happy about being locked in rooms but hey it’s better than having them underfoot or bolting out the door. Tech is coming out today to fix the sofa and then I think I’m done with projects for the moment. Waiting on the return of my rental deposit and then I can upgrade the pool controls and get that ready for summer. Later today, have a car club meeting and tomorrow, lunch with my old boss and her hubby. And somewhere in between, got regular errands to run too. I’m tired just reading this. Happy weekend everyone!

    • Debg March 12, 2022 / 1:02 pm

Hurrah for working appliances! I share your joy–was actually *looking forward* to laundry this weekend! (How sad is my life?)

How does a tech fix a sofa?

      • AJ March 12, 2022 / 2:25 pm

One of the bolts in the recliner mechanism popped off or broke so the sofa is looking sad, ie listing to one side so he’ll come and replace something. It might just be the bolt or he might have to take things apart and switch out the piece.

Hamster says: Behold my exalted position, people!
I must clean my home office now that I am actually working from it. Other than that, we got a nice dusting of snow this morning and hopefully we can take a stroll in it before it melts today. It was nearly 80 last weekend. So…March in Birmingham, Alabama!

      It’s rainy here today.

      • Dulcie March 12, 2022 / 11:13 am

Rain is nice once in awhile. ☔
We’re juuuust about into above freezing daytimes so looking forward to a nice spring rain.

        • allein 🐾 March 12, 2022 / 11:36 am

It’s 33 right now and drizzly but I heard a couple good downpours earlier. The weather app on my phone says “sleet forecasted.” I don’t have to go anywhere until tomorrow, so hopefully it’s better then. My brother’s birthday is Tuesday so we’re doing dinner at my parents’; I still have to get him a card but he didn’t answer me when I asked what he wants for his birthday….

          • Dulcie March 12, 2022 / 3:38 pm

Eww. Not the most pleasant type of rainy day. ☹️

      • allein 🐾 March 12, 2022 / 5:18 pm

Apparently it’s been snowing for a little bit. Guess I haven’t looked out the window in a while…

    • Debg March 12, 2022 / 1:07 pm

PSA: do NOT CLICK THROUGH. You will lose the entire day watching adorable pointy tailed kittens. Ask me how I know.

Hamster looks very real on top of his fountain cat tree.

Today I’m sowing curtains for the kitchen, they really needed to be replaced after 15 years, the problem and why they haven’t been replaced before is that I can’t find curtains that fit the windows, one window is split in two so the curtain has to be in two pieces if I want to be able to open the bottom window for air and still have the curtain drawn above and the other window curtain over the sink has to match the other one.

So I did what I had to do back then, bought 2 standard 84 inch long curtains and will cut them to fit. This is probably something a lot of you would consider easy to do but I’m NOT a crafty person and I hate sewing but needs must. I’m having people for diner for the first time in two years so I would like the house to look presentable.

    Wish me luck!

    • Dulcie March 12, 2022 / 11:16 am

Oh yes good luck with the curtains! I hope they turn out better than my attempts! I finally went with custom made. So expensive!

    • Georgiana March 12, 2022 / 3:18 pm

Well I’m done, the curtains are not perfect and I’m sure the old nun who taught us home economics at school would give me a D- but they hang pretty much strait and they are better than the old ones!

      • tara March 12, 2022 / 3:32 pm

Hey! Congrats! I was just going to post – do you know about that iron on fusion stuff from Ikea? I’m sure you can get it other places too. No sewing and presto – nice folded hem.

        • Georgiana March 12, 2022 / 7:04 pm

I don’t know about the IKEA kind but I do use iron bonding tape for pant hems but it doesn’t work very well on lighter thinner fabric it gives a stiff feeling and appearance to the hem.

          • Murray C. March 12, 2022 / 9:04 pm

They do make the fusing stuff for lightweight fabrics – too little too late, I realize – maybe next time? Good for you for getting it done so quickly.

    Question:

Is anyone else getting this error?

    Request Header Fields Too Large
The server refused this request because the request header fields are too large.

I’ve gotten it before on occasion but it had been a while, and now I’ve been getting it on and off for the last few weeks (sent it to Mike earlier this week and he hadn’t heard of it) but the last couple days I’m getting it almost every time I post a comment. I googled it and it seems to have something to do with cookies. The comment posts, but I have to clear my cookies to be able to reload the page (and since Chrome so kindly took away the ability to clear specific cookies, I have no choice but to delete everything instead of just deleting the ones from this site like I used to; I do “in the last hour” but it still logs me out of facebook almost every time and is also apparently resetting some youtube settings, and who knows what else that I haven’t noticed yet). I also tried blocking all third party cookies and took the site off my “can always use cookies” list but that didn’t help. Anyone else getting this, or tech-savvy enough to know how to fix it? It’s only on this site (and if I’m not mistaken, it’s only happened on my home laptop, not at work). I’m not sure there’s anything I can actually do on my end, but it’s driving me nuts (and I don’t have far to go so I really don’t need the extra help).

    • Georgiana March 12, 2022 / 2:37 pm

Sorry I haven’t had this, I don’t use Chrome I use Safari on my Mac.

  6. Murray C. March 12, 2022 / 10:55 am

Wild weather here – heavy rain overnight, sleet, then snow – all with some wild wind gusts. Glad I have nowhere I have to be. Working on taxes looks to be the day’s focus. Ah, I have just gotten my call to duty – see you later!

    • tara March 12, 2022 / 3:34 pm

ooh, good luck with the taxes Murray C. Got mine finished yesterday. What I’m getting back from the feds won’t cover what I owe the state and the city. humph. Just glad they’re done.

  7. Duckie 🐥 March 12, 2022 / 11:54 am

Hey, peeps. Thank goodness it’s the weekend. I really needed a Hamster pic today.
My optimism from last weekend got shot in the foot. Not only did our employment standards case get ruined, but hubby has decided to take on a second, part time job. I’m numb from the ache of necessity. I told him I was going to find a job, any job that would take me, but he refused.
So I’m buckling down and forcing myself to stop wasting my time with regrets and do some writing. I’ve got two excellent story ideas already outlined and rough drafted. I’ve got publisher ideas for each of them, and maybe I can at least sell the concepts to other authors. I’m fantastic at coming up with story bases, and maybe I could become a ghost writer or something.
Making some progress in spring cleaning. Weather is supposed to be very lion-like this coming week, which means I won’t want to go out. Put on some energetic music and see how far I can get.
Some COVID restrictions have been lifted, and I’m reeeeeeeallly hoping the border situation will ease soon.
Our taxes are done, and hubby’s refund will be a blessing. I can’t believe how tired my wrist got when I did my tax form. All those zeroes.
Daylight stupid Savings starts tonight. I wish the government would just make up its mind and suppress it. Pick one time (preferably Standard Time) and stick with it.
BFF came over yesterday with a totally unexpected surprise. She bought me the budgie Squishmallow! I was so shocked I started crying right then and there. It’s the little 12” one, and I’ve lost my heart to it already. I named it Mr. Beebles, as Duckie’s nickname is Little Beebles. Duckie, unfortunately, is afraid of it, so there won’t be any interaction between them.
Off to wreak havoc on stuff. Have a great weekend.

    • Dulcie March 12, 2022 / 3:40 pm

Duckie, can you use any of your writing to generate income? What you are describing sounds like a paying gig but I don’t know much about these things.

      • Duckie 🐥 March 12, 2022 / 6:41 pm

I’m truly hoping that something will come from this. I’m going to be applying for a writer’s grant this summer. Here’s hoping.

Hamster is a beautiful, loving, and highly creative cat. Who knew you could repurpose a fountain as a cat perch? I sure didn’t.

Errands are done, so I get to start sampling for my stepmother’s throw! I’ve got three beautiful colors of a silk and wool yarn to play with. Might also make a quick road trip to see a potential town to live in. It’s a gorgeous day after a snowy week, so why not! Why not!

And this afternoon, I may go out to see an Irish band, containing one of my coworkers: my town has a parade for St. Patrick’s Day, and the band plays afterward. Two years ago, he told me about this annual tradition, and I’d planned to go, and then it got cancelled due to COVID. Would be good to finally see them play!

Hugs to you all, and comfort in these uncertain times. Like Hamster, I’m thinking of the Ukrainian animals and their hoomins.

Anything can be a cat perch if you have a cat…

      • Duckie 🐥 March 12, 2022 / 2:56 pm

Anything IS a cat perch if a cat has you…

Mid-term grading done! Phew! I teach for free – they pay me to grade.
Happy weekend all! It’s doing weird things, weather wise, in Philly today. Rain, sleet, snow, and then over night it it supposed to get really cold. Hamster – you’ve got the right idea about things. That fountain looks like it is a custom fit for you!
Bracing myself for the time change, it always does a number on me. Just going to do the best I can.
    ❤️❤️❤️ to everyone.

Sofa tech left andI still have a broken sofa. Seems the part people sent the mechanism for a manual recliner not the power recliner. Bad news that part is on back order for SEVEN to EIGHT months. 😱🤬 Good news, I bought the extended protection plan and the customer service rep put in a claim for me to receive a brand new replacement sofa. 🥳 I’ll find out in about a week if that’s approved. Sometimes it pays for those extra warranties.

    • Georgiana March 12, 2022 / 6:21 pm

      Yeah for extra warranties!!
