Weekend Open Thread

It’s always a great day to make new friends, and today we have two new visitors in the chat room, thanks to reader Ivy L.,

I offer up these photos of Troy and Abed, our brothers from another mother. Like the BFFs from Community, they are inseparable. Abed is the fluffy tabby and Troy is the house panther.

I’m impressed by Troy’s enthusiastic and committed yawning.

OMG my boys are on Cutetropolis! I’ve been lurking on this site (and Cute Overload) since the beginning, but this is my first submission. I’m a HUGE fan of NOMTOM, and I’m thrilled to see my guys on here. Thanks for making my day, Mike!

We love seeing your furbabies, Ivy! They’re gorgeous and clearly living their best life.

Troy always seems to be screaming at something. I love his pout. Abed has fabulous ear hair (fur?).

    • Dulcie July 9, 2022 / 10:39 am

      Ivy – Hello!
Your furbabies are just marvelous and I love the poses and pictures!

      • Ivy Loughborough July 9, 2022 / 12:54 pm

They are very tolerant of us shoving cameras in their faces. Abed is what you might call an aggressive cuddler: the minute you sit down, he’s on you. Troy is very patient about Abed grooming and cuddling him.
I’ll have to see if I have a video of bath time.

  3. 6rabbits July 9, 2022 / 8:56 am

Abed with the remote on his head had me grinning😁

Hello all, I’ve been away for a little bit because I didn’t feel like engaging or doing pretty much anything these past few weeks since Beans passed away. Her condition got worst fast and there wasn’t any other choice but to let her go but it’s been really hard.

Minnie is still looking for her and she seems lonely, she’s never been an only cat. I really don’t know what to do, my husband wants to get a couple of kittens but I don’t know if that would make things better or worse for a 15 1/2 year old cat like Minnie.

Well anyway I decided to kick myself in the butt and try to get back into life, I’ll be 65 in 4 days I’ll be damned if I’ll spend my birthday moping.

Oh and Troy and Abed are gorgeous give them a scritch on the head from me and an extra one for Troy I love house panthers!

    Have a good weekend!

So sorry about your loss of your precious, Beans. We all understand your grief and needing healing time. It’s hard to know if Minnie would like kittens running around or enjoy being an only cat.
Troy and Abed look comfy and Troy seems to yawn a lot. And Abed doesn’t seem to mind being the remote holder.
We cutetropolis fans do enjoy seeing one another’s precious fur/scaley/shelled/naked, pet babies. Sorry if any of you have insect as pets. I don’t quite see their cuteness but I understand your attachment.

    • Dubravkamcvmd July 9, 2022 / 9:29 am

I’m so sorry about Beans. She knew she was loved.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell how a cat will react to a new kitten or cat. When Wacket died at 18 his sister didn’t react in any obvious way to his disappearance. Maybe a month later I played a video I had of him, in which he meowed, on my desktop. Minkette sat and watched and almost immediately began panting. I turned it off because she was so clearly distressed. Maybe you could try fostering a kitten and see how she reacts?

    • Debg July 9, 2022 / 9:59 am

So very very sorry about Beans. She had a wonderful long life with you, and it’s excruciating to say goodbye. Hugs to you and your family, including Minnie.

Maybe Minnie would like a senior friend? Maybe try fostering kittens to see how she does?

    • Dulcie July 9, 2022 / 10:43 am

Oh G I am so very very sorry about your precious Beans. 💕 Crazy hard I know.

I’m sorry for your loss, Georgiana!

    • Kar July 9, 2022 / 6:19 pm

Oh I’m so sorry about Beans.

It’s going to take time to heal, thinking good thougths for you all.

  5. AJ July 9, 2022 / 9:41 am

Such handsome bois! Fluffy tabbys and haus panthers are some of my favorite kitties.

So sorry to hear about Beans. 😢 It’s always hard to let them go. I second the idea of fostering another cat to see how Minnie takes to them. You can try different ages too to see which stage she handles one better. Kittens might be too much and an older cat may be too set in their ways.

  6. Debg July 9, 2022 / 10:13 am

Happy Caturday, everyone! It’s lovely to meet new kitties; it’s sad to say goodbye to our beloved Beans.

Can you all send good thoughts my way? I’m hoping to hear later today that my offer on a condo has been accepted. If everything goes as planned, I could be moving within a month! I’m trying not to vibrate out of control with excitement and panic 🤪🙃. Wish me luck?

Since any move, whether it happens now or a year from now, will require some downsizing, I’m making lists of the big tools and other items to sell. Making lists always seems to calm me down. Plus I’ve got a new project to warp on the loom–warping requires counting and concentration, so it’s a great distraction.

    • Dulcie July 9, 2022 / 10:46 am

Wishing you good luck! But mostly for the downsizing lol! 😁

      • Debg July 9, 2022 / 10:51 am

I know, right!? So much stuff in my world. It will be a weight off to let some of it go, especially if I can make a little money.

    • Georgiana July 9, 2022 / 11:23 am

Good luck on the offer being accepted!

    • Emsthemonster July 9, 2022 / 5:16 pm

We keep all the 20 paws crossed!

    • Kar July 10, 2022 / 1:18 pm

Definitely sending good thoughts. Hopefully you’ll be able to reap some of the market resetting for a reasonable price and interest rate.

Love the idea of downsizing and simplifying your life as well as new projects on the horizon.

      Kind of envious.

Dear All, What with the end of the semester on July 1 and the craziness of traveling back to the States (July 5), I didn’t even realize that Mike posted Mutz as last week’s Caturday conversation cat. Thank you all for your lovely comments and words of support. My father’s ashes will be laid to rest today. I will respond individually on the post but I wanted to acknowledge your kindness where everyone would be likely to see it. Hugs to you all!

    • Debg July 9, 2022 / 11:43 am

Hugs right back at you. Take care of yourself today and know that we’re thinking of you.

      • Dulcie July 9, 2022 / 1:50 pm

Ditto. What a tough year. 💕

    • Emsthemonster July 9, 2022 / 5:17 pm

I’m so sorry for your loss.
But I’m glad to see you here with us again.

    • Kar July 9, 2022 / 6:20 pm

Safe travels and I hope that you find this time meaningful and healing.

  8. Duckie 🐥 July 9, 2022 / 12:42 pm

Ivy, your kitties are so sparkly!
Georgiana, I’m so sorry about Beans. We’re going to miss her.
    Fingers crossed for you, Deb.
Feathered hugs to you, N. Fritz.
Duckieville is crazy this week. I’m severely congested, but COVID tests are negative. Well, mine are, at least. My oldest nephew tested positive on Thursday, and we’re all trying to figure when he was exposed and if we were exposed to him at what time. We know where he got it, but we’re not sure of when. He is part of my non-vaxxer side of the family, and all of them who have gotten COVID have been in the hospital.
Duckie aggressively asserted her tiny self this week. Hubby thoughtlessly dropped a pair of scissors on a table, and Duckie flew out of her cage, hovered in front of his face, shrieked at him, and them flew back in her cage. The expression on his face was exactly the same as Ron Weasley in HP2, when his mother’s Howler was yelling at him. I thought hubby was going to need to change clothing. I thought I might have to change mine, too, but from laughing. Hubby now flinches when Duckie simply stretches her wings.
Off to force myself do do a sewing project today, otherwise it won’t get done.
    Have a fantastic weekend, everyone.

    • debg July 9, 2022 / 1:53 pm

What was hubby thinking, with those scissors. Lil Duckie was right to react as she did.

      Also 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

    • Dulcie July 9, 2022 / 2:26 pm

Oh yes Duckie. That was truly an underwear changing moment for all involved!! 🤣🤣🤣

    • 6rabbits July 9, 2022 / 6:48 pm

Little Duckie cracks me up!😂 Would have loved to see hubby’s face!

  9. Sowmya July 9, 2022 / 1:22 pm

Condolences to everyone who has lost a beloved family member, two- or four-legged. I hope peace and healing can be found in remembering them with love.

My tiny bit of good news: Nikolai Devinovich is getting less jealous of adoptive little sister Ekaterina Velikaya and looks less grumpy when she’s being petted! (He still asserts his authority as First Cat though she outweighs him by over a kilogram. Good thing she’s a laid back gentle giant..)

    • debg July 9, 2022 / 2:56 pm

Progress sometimes happens in baby steps.

My own gentle giant Fred Weasleycat is the scaredy-est cat I’ve ever had, as well as the second largest ever. Funny how the big ones don’t realize their size sometimes.

    • debg July 9, 2022 / 2:54 pm

Oh, Carl. Such a good boi.

      • allein🐾 July 9, 2022 / 3:36 pm

I love the little flick of the wrist.

  10. Alice Shortcake July 9, 2022 / 3:31 pm

Is anyone else getting a Flurston Boils vibe from the second photo? I can almost hear one of Mike’s hilarious Halloween scroll-downs. Talking of terror, earlier today I was horrified to discover a hair almost an inch long growing under my chin. Next step: building a gingerbread house in the woods and waiting for a couple of tasty tots to come tripping down the path…

    • allein🐾 July 9, 2022 / 3:35 pm

      OMG, yes! It’s the eyes!

    • debg July 9, 2022 / 4:10 pm

At least you’ve got a good plan for the future, Alice! 😁🤣🤣

    • Dubravkamcvmd July 9, 2022 / 5:03 pm

I use a magnifying mirror and tweezers every morning. Grrrr.

  11. allein🐾 July 9, 2022 / 4:44 pm

Clearly I have nothing to share today but funny cute stuff.

    • Dubravkamcvmd July 9, 2022 / 5:04 pm

      That’s adorable

  12. Emsthemonster July 9, 2022 / 5:36 pm

I’m still alive, but as always, summer sucks. I am simply unable to do all the required housework, also I’m sometimes guilty of playing with the kittens instead of gardening.

People lose their common sense in the heat and everyone gets loud. For example, my neighbour doesn’t want to stop chatting with the other neighbours while she is mowing the lawn, so she is pushing the lawnmower, the other neighbours follow her and they outyell the electric lawnmower…

Finally I could have 4 days off work. On the first day I got a heat shock, so 2 days in bed with fever. On the third day I was on my feet again. As I was cleaning up after the kitties in the morning (food leftovers) I managed to pet a wasp and several bees that looked like food remains, so my left hand got stung about 7-8 times and swollen into a huge balloon. I looked like a fiddlecrab 🙂 I learnt it in the painful way that I should wear my glasses and nothing should be done before the first coffee.

My household appliances also decided to give up one after the other, so this is an expensive summer in the monster household.

    • Kar July 9, 2022 / 6:24 pm

House work is overrated. Don’t stress over it.

Cold showers are relatively cheap though to keep cool. As are flavorice popsicles.

    • Dulcie July 9, 2022 / 9:00 pm

Oh Ems!! The bee stings and wasp bites! I can’t stand the thought of it!! 😲🤯
I hope you don’t have any lasting difficulties!!

    • Debg July 9, 2022 / 9:37 pm

Ems, so sorry for all your troubles. Hopefully Maszat and the kittens are providing some comfort. Are you able to touch the babies yet?

  13. debg July 9, 2022 / 8:26 pm

Peeps, your good wishes did the trick! I’m under contract and things are starting to move!

    • Dulcie July 9, 2022 / 9:01 pm

Yay?? Ha. Yes, I’m sure it’s a good thing lol!!

  14. allein🐾 July 9, 2022 / 9:55 pm

How cute is this? A pet bed made from an upside-down table and some fabric.

    • 6rabbits July 9, 2022 / 11:03 pm

That is genius! Gonna look for an unused table in the basement tomorrow 👍🏼
