I’m hugely impressed by the gorgeous Hamster’s multitasking abilities.
Hamster’s so pretty. What’s he watching?
I’m tired. The smoke alarm in my bedroom went off a little after midnight last night. I could not see or smell any evidence of smoke. The “hush” button did nothing. It’s one of those ten-year battery ones that’s sealed and you can’t take the battery out (and it’s not even a year old). Ended up calling the police non-emergency number and a cop showed up and agreed there didn’t seem to be any reason for it and tried to get it to stop but couldn’t, even after using his pocketknife to pry the unit open. Then a couple firemen came, and also agreed there was no fire (if there was, it presumably would have set off the hallway detector by then, too), and one of them ended up just ripping out the wire to the speaker. It was beeping for over an hour by then. There is also a red light that flashes in the same pattern as the alarm (three long beeps for smoke, four short beeps for CO). It’s still flashing away on my kitchen counter.
Guess I’m going to Home Depot later.
Horrible experience – 10 on the annoyance scale
By the time I settled down enough to sleep it was well after 3.
But were any of the first responders cute?
The serious question!😆
Haha! The cop was kinda cute, but he looked like he was barely out of high school. (Probably older than he looks. And had a wedding band.)
How annoying! I actually had that happen, but without the lights, and didn’t even think of calling police! When I couldn’t get it to shut the heck off, I cut the wires. So there!😝
You need a furry friend to cuddle!
Ours is in the corridor pass the bathroom and tend to go off if my husband takes a longer and hotter than usual shower, scares the daylight out of the cats!
I have one in the hallway and one in the bedroom. When I first moved in my new oven (probably burning off some kind of residue or something from it being new) would set off the old alarm in the hallway. It stopped after a bit at lower temps but didn’t stop completely until I replaced the alarm. Until then I would drape a towel over it until I was done with the oven.
When I was in college the bathroom at the opposite end of my dorm floor was close enough to the fire alarm that they had to prop the door open a few inches in the mornings when everyone was getting ready for the day so the steam from the showers wouldn’t all come out at once in a big cloud. That caused an unplanned fire drill more than once. (The layout of the room meant all a passerby could see was the wall of the first toilet stall so it wasn’t a big deal to have the door open just a bit.)
That is the worst. And even more annoying is when you can’t figure out which one is beeping. We had something similar happen one time and after checking all the smoke detectors, we realized it was the CO2 monitor. It’s enough to make one use either a sledgehammer or a shotgun on it just to make it stop.
Such a relaxing way to spend an evening. Hamster has such amazing coloring, he’s so handsome.
I’m sitting here with both dogs cuddled up on my lap. Great start to my Saturday. If I can get them to move, I might have some time this morning to get going again my room painting project. Also need to build a piece of furniture. Later this morning, I’m getting my 2nd Covid booster shot. Want to make sure I’m covered before winter starts up and we’re inside more. Tomorrow hubby has entered the Mustang in a car show which will take most of the day. Who knows he might get a trophy. Happy weekend everyone!
Can’t remember if I posted this before but it’s still in my list of stuff.

Hamster needs to upgrade his technology to screen in screen.
Morning, Hamster.
Allein, I’m tired, too, but not for nearly as good a reason as you.
Peeps, we need rain. If anyone has extra, could you PLEASE send it to the southwest coast of BC?
Hamster is his usual handsome self.
We ate a store bought Shepherd’s pie last night and it gave such bad indigestion that I couldn’t sleep for the longest time and when I finally did I had nightmares and I woke up this morning with a bad headache.
Just home from taking our old girl, Portia (the porch cat), to her last vet visit. She was seventeen; we almost named her Katrina, but decided that wasn’t going to be cute. She had a full life. Outlived her three kittens, who I was always convinced had different fathers. Figured she had one really wild night! Came home and hugged the remaining kitty, gently. He’s always extra sweet when I’m upset or in pain. It’s especially bad, because husband is still in the hospital, recovering from a badly broken leg. She was mostly his cat, and basically lived on his desk.
💔😢
So sorry, Carlotta. Hugs to you and your husband and the remaining kitty. It’s never easy, but Portia had a fantastic life with you all.
It’s so hard to let them go.😥 Hugs.
Hearts to you.
Oh Carlotta. What an absolutely miserable and heart wrenching time. So sorry you had to see Portia over the rainbow bridge. Definitely one of the hardest things!!
Hugs. 💕
So sorry about Portia. And that on top of hubby is a lot to deal with. Hugs to everyone.
And it’s probably hard for your husband since he’s in the hospital and couldn’t say good bye to Portia. His desk will seem empty when he gets home. We all understand the sadness both of you will be feeling. Hope your husband can get home soon.
I’m so sorry. That’s wrenching. You’ll always have her in your heart.
So sorry to hear this, Carlotta. My condolences to you and your husband.
Farewell to Portia, a Much Loved Kitty who has earned sweet repose.
Our furry friends leave such a hole when they are gone.
I’m so sorry. For you, for Portia, for hubby and your other kitty.
Sending mental hugs to you all
Hamster always delights. Such a smart, elegant, and adorable kitty.
Hugs to anyone suffering from sleep deprivation, illness, grief, or bad news.
I’m in my studio again, trying to get everything unpacked and sorted into a working state. Finally got my thread boxes mounted to the wall, then built a lightweight 9-unit storage cube thingy with doors. If I can mount the cube thingy on the wall, it will be perfect for storing yarn, sorted by color.
But first, a nap–I made the mistake of eating and now all I want to do is sleep! Maybe George will curl up with me and I can figure out why he’s been grouchy for the past few days. He’s lashing out at Scorpius lately and we need to figure out why. Everybody else has been coexisting quite peacefully. I’m still happily surprised that the cats’ relationships have changed so much in the new place. Life is so much better with Scorpius integrated into the clowder.
Good to hear about the cats. Sometimes moving everyone to a new totally neutral place puts them all on equal footing so there’s none of that hey you’re in my territory hissy fits. And your new studio sounds wonderful with all the storage. Almost have my new kitchen cabinet together. Was easier to put together than the directions made it seem.
As kids my brother was my one constant as we moved frequently.
Maybe the move reinforced this for Scorpius in someway. On the other hand, George maybe feeling insecure in the new setting and will need time to feel more confident.
Sorry to add to all the sadness, but my dad seems to have got noticeably weaker and more confused over the past week. This evening he said that he doesn’t feel as though he’ll be here much longer, and I think he may be right.
❤
Oh that’s so hard. However this turns out, I hope that you and your Dad can be close in the coming days.
{{{{{hugs}}}}}
More hugs, Alice. I know you’ve been anticipating this scenario, but that doesn’t make it any easier.
Sorry to hear this. It can’t be easy on your family with your dad’s health deteriorating. Hope he is as comfortable as he can be during this time.
May you he able to bring him some comfort.
Oh dear. Sometimes they know. My heart goes out to you. If it is his time, I hope it is a peaceful transition. 💕
So sorry to hear that.
Can imagine your pain, it was horrible watching my father so please hold his hand and let him know that he is not alone.
Thanks, all. He seems a bit brighter this morning so I’m hoping he was just going through a bad patch, but he’s almost 89 and has multiple health problems so I’m still bracing myself for the worst. My mother died when she was only 52, and every day I find myself thinking “at least she didn’t have to go through this awful slow decline”.
I’m late to the open thread as usual.
Hamster is an exceptional beauty.
My kitties are sending big comforting purrs to Alice and Carlotta.
