Weekend Open Thread

Happy Caturday! Today we welcome a new visitor to the open thread, courtesy of reader Michele M., who writes:

This is our supreme leader And benevolent ruler, Catticus Rex. Sometimes he like to channel his inner therapist.

Cat sitting in chair, looking at you.
Let’s begin in your childhood, shall we?
Same cat, resting one arm over edge of cat bed, frowning.

I LOVE the name! If I ever get another male cat I will name him Catticus Rex. He does seem insightful, but maybe a bit judgmental?

There’s definitely a bit of judgy eye rolling in the third pic! 😸

    Magnificent!!

Love the folded arms in the first pic! The second pic definitely looks dubiously judging!
The hardwood in your house is stupendous! My sister used to live in a house with wood like that. Bet you have hardwood floors, too?

Stunning, both in looks and his name. And you know all cats are judging us.

The woodwork reminds me of my childhood home, a circa 1900 late Victorian, early Arts and Crafts pile of a house. Even had a servant’s room in the attic. And at least one resident ghost. Hope yours is spirit free, lol.

The way Catticus Rex looks in the second photo gives me an overwhelming urge to apologize even if I don’t know what for.

The first pic gives me the impression that Catticus Rex got up that morning and thought “What the hell, I’m going to do something DIFFERENT with my legs today!”

Well, I returned from Haworth yesterday and after viewing a couple of absurdly cheap properties – one of them a delightful little stone-built cottage less than three minutes’ walk from the Bronte Parsonage Museum – I came to the conclusion that the village is too hilly for one no longer in the first flush of youth. Also, right now I live within walking distance of many shops, a library, two theatres, two cinemas and a mainline railway station – it’s an awful lot to give up. So I’ll be staying where I am and getting the house exactly as I want it.

On my first night in Haworth I rashly went for a walk in what seemed to be a mild drizzle of rain. Almost immediately it turned into a windstorm of Wuthering Heights proportions, and as I walked up the path between the church and the parsonage I fought a losing battle for ownership of my umbrella, which was soon reduced to a battered wreck! Nothing daunted, I returned to the churchyard the next morning and was able to identify where my 5xgreat-grandfather is buried (not far from the last highwayman to be hanged). I also took the opportunity to go for a walk on Haworth Moor.

On the debit side, on my return home I was dismayed to find that my boiler had opted out of the Christmas spirit, leaving me without central heating or hot water. I reported it at once and was assured that it would be fixed within 24 hours…that was 28 hours ago.

STOP PRESS! My neighbour just fixed it and saved Christmas!! 😇😇 😀😀

Thank goodness for helpful neighbors! While nobody enjoyed the fire alarm this morning, at least we don’t have (expensive) water gushing out of a garage and damaging the building.

If you like where you live and can rearrange the house to suit you, that’s potentially easier than moving.

Sending hugs–I’m sure there are many memories affecting this holiday season. The first Christmas after my dad died was pretty difficult for me.

      • Dulcie December 24, 2022 / 4:23 pm

Definitely going to be a different Christmas for you this year Alice. We’re all thinking of you.

  6. DEBG December 24, 2022 / 11:34 am

Definitely judgy. But when you’re that gorgeous, it’s appropriate. Also a great name. And I share in the love for the woodwork. My house back in Kansas, built in 1928, had woodwork like that, which nobody had ever painted over.

Happy holidays to you all! We’ve had a dramatic morning here. The sprinkler system in someone’s garage broke and was shooting a waterfall. The owner of that unit was on vacation, so nobody could get in. My neighbor who lives over that particular garage finally managed to contact the HOA manager, and the repairs necessitated turning on everybody’s fire alarms for about 2 minutes. They’re off now, thankfully–poor Sevi did NOT like that noise!

  7. Duckie 🐥 December 24, 2022 / 12:01 pm

    It’s the weekend. Yay.
All hail Cuteness Rex. That’s quite the scritch spot marker under his chin.
Freezing rain outside. I’m stuck inside. Running out of non essential food because I can’t get to stores. Plenty of food in house, but boring stuff. Hubby walked to work again.
Have decided that I’m going to talk to mall owners and see if we can create a living space in one of the empty suites upstairs. It may cost more than living here, but the convenience…! And no debt!
Duckie is definitely slowing down. She will be four in spring. Physically slowing down, but her tiny attitude looms large. Yesterday she sat for an hour staring at hubby, until he asked me to make her stop, because he felt threatened!
Have a great weekend, everyone. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone! It’s 1:46pm and I just got up.

Need to do some chores, wrap stuff, make brownies, listen to Neil Gaiman reading A Christmas Carol…it’s a balmy 13F and sunny here in New Jersey. Tomorrow’s high is forecasted to be a positively tropical 29. I think I’ll wait until then to check the mail (they hadn’t come yet when I got home yesterday and I wasn’t going back outside).

    • Alice Shortcake December 24, 2022 / 2:00 pm

I too have a tradition of listening to ‘A Christmas Carol’ – my favourite version is read by Anton Lesser. I also treasure my copy of the book, which I found at my grandparents’ house in the late 60s or early 70s. Even today, if I sniff the pages I’m instantly transported to their living room.

I was going to do laundry today but I got an email from JCP&L (electric company) asking me to conserve energy for the next day because it’s so cold so I will wait..

  9. Kar December 24, 2022 / 5:39 pm

    Merry Christmas to you all!

    Stay warm and stay safe!

Trying to do a donation to the Sierra Club on my brother’s behalf but it will not process. Just sits there spinning. Tried last night and eventually closed it (after at least two hours). Trying again and it’s doing the same thing. If it charges me twice later I will be very annoyed.

How can one cat have 2 such wildly different expressions? And I agree with everyone…Catticus Rex is the best name ever!

Meanwhile, I just tested positive for Covid. Merry Xmas to me. Penny seems to be avoiding me. Teller is trying to be supportive, but my coughing scares him away on the regular.

Meanwhile, thank you Pfizer for making sure it doesn’t actually kill me and that symptoms are miserable, but tolerable.
