Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to Caturday! Today’s visitors are Storm and Skye, enjoying the high life thanks to mom Georgiana Y.:

I bought two cat trees for Storm and Skye because contrary to the cats I’ve had in the past including Minnie they really like to climb and are fascinated by the birds and squirrels outside.

Black cat sits atop cat platform
It’s a whole other world up here!

I don’t know if you can see but I’ve learned from the vet that Skye is actually a diluted tabby tortie, from the front she looks like a tabby but on her back you can really see the tortie gold marking. The vet said they are really rare.

Cat shows back, containing colored stripes
So many colors!

    Pretty kitties!

So I saw the endocrinologist yesterday, finally. He said the nodule on my thyroid doesn’t meet the criteria to need a biopsy (very and not solid) so I guess that’s good news. He gave me orders for blood work and another ultrasound to get done a year after the first scan (which was in late October) and set up an appointment to see him after that (November). So now I just have to not lose those in the next ten months (they’re good for a year). And whatever else is going on with my neck is not from that. So I guess that’s good but also a little annoying.

No plans today. I need to do some chores. It’s day 13 of 30 days of Yoga with Adriene, and I’ve actually kept up with it (though I missed last Friday because I got home too late; did Friday’s early Saturday afternoon and Saturday’s later in the evening). Need to do some chores and stuff.

      (very and not solid)

      – that should say “very small”

After the vet told me that Skye was a diluted tortoiseshell tabby I looked on the internet and I found they are called a TORBIES, I found many photos of diluted torbies but I think Skye is the prettiest of them all.

We had our first real storm of the season yesterday with accumulation of 25 cm or almost 10 in of snow but we were lucky because the freezing rain they originally said would come after the snow did not materialize. I lived through the Great Ice Storm of 1998 and I get PTSD every time we get freezing rain.

    Have a good weekend all.

Your kitties are beautiful! I love the Torby shadowing. Cat trees are a must! My bun would love a bun tree—can’t jump from one level to the next on a cat one.

Skye is very pretty indeed! And Storm looks so content sitting on that cat tree.

I was in Ottawa in 1998 and also lived through that Great Ice Storm. I was one of the lucky ones. Some of my colleagues were without power for weeks! Keeping my fingers crossed for you Georgiana, that you don’t get freezing rain!

Off to the bank today to talk about my retirement money. I don’t want to save for retirement. I want to spend all my money now! Buy more toys! More gadgets!

I’d like to blow all my savings on a trip somewhere exotic, but I’m still not sure where I want to travel to or if it’s even safe to travel anywhere.

Guess I’ll just leave the money in the bank for now.

    Bad week. Need kitties.
Hubby got shingles. I got emergency Shingrix, on top of a mouthful of lesions due to stress flare up.
    Lurking.

    • Sedro6 January 14, 2023 / 11:26 am

Bad week, indeed! There, there. [Pat’s back] Really, there should be a company (Caterprise?) where you could get some loaner lap-sitting cats for the day.

    • Georgiana January 14, 2023 / 11:35 am

Sorry about the bad week, Storm, Skye and Minnie are sending healing purrs.

    • Kar January 14, 2023 / 7:37 pm

Oh geez, not fun. I hope that you both feel better.

thankfully got shingrix a few years ago so hopefully won’t get it

The most positive thing I can say about your husband getting shingles is that some versions of it are not so bad and it can be an episode that doesn’t last long. A friend got it in her 80’s, bad but not awful, lasted a couple of months. Afterwards she got vaccinated and she’s in her 90s now and hasn’t had another episode.

Skye is the prettiest torbie ever. Storm looks so beautiful in the sunlight. Can you see stripes in her black fur in that light? I had a black cat years ago who was actually striped. I’m not sure about Scorpius.

Allein, good news (I guess?) about your thyroid. Duckie, so sorry about the shingles and other things. 6Rabbits, no enterprising pet company has come up with a rabbit tree? Shocking! It wouldn’t be hard to make one with cardboard shipping tubes and plywood circles.

I’m still trying to get my wrist back to normal. Had dinner with friends last night. Late this afternoon, I’m going to a show of African acrobatics and taking myself out to dinner again. It’s a much more socially active weekend than I usually have!

The refurbishment of the Shortcakery continues apace, although I struggled to find a laminate/carpet fitter and he isn’t available until 2nd March. Painting the living room was a bit of a chore because I wanted to keep the wallpaper border, which is a laser-cut design featuring swags of flowers. It took me FIVE ******* HOURS of work with a tiny brush to paint the nooks and crannies in the pattern, compared to which painting the entire dining room and papering a wall was a doddle!

I’ve decided to reward myself for all this heavy labour (the heaviest part of which was wrestling some large items of old furniture out of the house) and celebrate my upcoming birthday with tickets for “La Boheme” and “Madama Butterfly” at one of the local theatres in the first week of February. Since I already had a ticket for “Ariadne auf Naxos” in Leeds at the end of the month it’s going to be a year’s worth of opera-going crammed into three weeks…

Your two are mar-vah-less!!! Dilute tortie has such unusual coloring. Good to hear Allein that the thyroid issue is managable. Sorry Ducky with hubby having shingles and you also not feeling well. I’ll send my little guy Thor to snuggle with you. He’s like a little furnace. Yeah Alice for the renovations going well and for your upcoming musical evenings. I’m kinda jealous – La Boheme, and Madama Butterfly.

Managed to get over to our storage unit and clear it out before the rains started. All our holiday (Halloween/Christmas) decorations are now in a storage shed in our yard. I’m hunkering down for the next few days and only doing necessary errands as the deluge has begun. We’re expecting about 2 inches, maybe more, of rain in the next 3 days. I think I’ll need a boat soon!

  6. Kar January 14, 2023 / 7:39 pm

    Love Skye’s coloring.

Hope that everyone is staying warm and dry and getting stuff done this holiday weekend., those that get Monday off at least

Got riffed this week, such fun!

    • Dubravkamcvmd January 15, 2023 / 11:49 am

      What does getting riffed mean?

      • Kar January 15, 2023 / 1:10 pm

        Reduction in Force or layoffs.

In my case due to my company being bought out.

Needless to say that’s changing my New Year’s resolutions.

        • DEBG January 15, 2023 / 1:21 pm

Kar, so sorry about the RIF. Even when you see it coming, it’s not fun.

          • Kar January 15, 2023 / 2:40 pm

Thanks. this apparently was a deep one. The vp who was supposed to meet with me that day apparently got laid off before he could even talk to me!

            • Emsthemonster January 15, 2023 / 3:16 pm

I hope you find a much better job soon!

        • Dubravkamcvmd January 15, 2023 / 4:07 pm

Oh no! I’m very sorry. I hope this is just a shock and a brief period of searching for a better job, and then finding it. Fingers crossed!
