And finally: No. It. Isn’t.
Murray C. shares a pup who doesn’t like bedtime.
Gordon the squirrel got really lucky that his human mama found him. I think squirrels are cute but I have a friend that calls them rats with good PR.
I was also thinking Gordon was very lucky he was found by a human, with his disabilities. I’m sure that’s why mom didn’t try to retrieve him—she knew.
Yes. I have experienced the same thing. Took in a baby squirrel that I thought fell out of its nest during a bad rain storm.
He had all his fur but didn’t have teeth grow in yet and only one eye had opened. After his other eye opened and he seemed okay to go back, I tried several times to leave him by the same tree where I found him. Every time he would jump back on my shoulder as he saw me leave.
He lived a spoiled life for 4 months until his tail got all droopy and his back legs got wobbly. Turns out that this ailment is pretty common in squirrels, especially black squirrels like the one I found. It’s a genetic disorder that prevents them from metabolizing vitamin D. That leads to muscle paralysis that spreads to all their muscles, and eventually causes death.
☹️
That must have been very upsetting. Each time I’ve been responsible for an animal who becomes seriously ill I have a strong impulse to ask the animal to just set aside this whole not-being-able to talk thing for a short time so that we can talk about their medical problem and how I’m trying to help and they can talk about how they feel. Utterly idiotic but it’s a strong desire.
Felt the same way because I didn’t know what to do to help.
This was back decades ago when I don’t think there were any squirrel rescue places in my city. (I have no idea if they exist now).
For a while I thought he had the squirrel version of epilepsy because he would sometimes freeze suddenly in the middle of his playing and then carry on as if nothing had happened.
It was only later that I got a clue as to why he died when I saw a documentary about urban squirrels and that got a mention into their medical problems.
FYI, black and grey squirrels in North America do not carry rabies. So you’re clear on that front if you ever get bitten/scratched accidentally. They do carry other diseases, so it’s always a good idea to have all your vaccinations up to date when caring for one.
One of my friends in college was convinced the squirrels on campus were throwing acorns at her.
Bedtime pup = me as a kid. I didn’t want to miss anything.
My sister now has 2 cats—no one in our family has EVER had cats. Whole new world to us.😳 (They were abandoned as still nursing kitties). Having seen many cat vids here I keep telling my sis, “Yeah, that’s normal,” whenever she texts about their escapades.😂 She and my 6th grade niece love them dearly!
How in the *heck* did 2 goats get in to Tar-jay? It’s not like it’s in the middle of goat territory or something!🤨
Gordon the squirrel’s story is so sweet. He treats his human as both Mom and a tree!
That would be so cool to have a squirrel in residence. Yeah for the lady taking him in and raising him. Criminal cats was semi-disappointing. Really would have liked to seen the crimes they were accused of but the mug shots were cute. Love goats but not so sure about having them wander my local Target. Would make me re-evaluate if I really needed that bottle of wine, lol. Ok doggo, bedtime is whatever time you decide **as I slowly back away**. Just don’t blame me in the morning when you’re ti-ti.
