Welcome to the Caturday open thread! We get to meet a new friend today, who comes with both an interesting story and a useful cat naming strategy, from reader Bonnie M.:
Meet Nelly! A week ago, Husband encountered this creature at the park by the river. At night, by herself, with a small dish of water (a cut down plastic bottle). She had on a flea-collar, but isn’t chipped. Very friendly, and hungry!
She’s named for Nellysford, Virginia. Long ago and many cats ago, Husband started naming kittens, alphabetically, after VA places. First litter were Amelia, Buckingham, Caroline, Dinwiddie, Essex, and Fairfax. By the time we got to N, choices were limited. Norfolk? Newport News? Nottoway? Namozine? Norge? OK, Nelly. Also gives her a full name for scolding. “Nelly S. Ford, come out of there!”
Yeah, Nelly is a good name and I agree she dodged with Dinwiddie! What a name for a place even! She is a very cute cat!
Nothing going on here except rain, which is good cos it brought the temp way down! Lazy day, have to pick up groceries soon (the best part of the whole Covid thing was pickups!) and then sweep the house of bun furπ If you are looking for a bun do NOT get a mini-lop, unless you like TONS of fur.
She’s gorgeous! And love the back story, Nelly is a perfect name for her. Supposed to be hot, hot, hot here for the next week so I’ll see how much stuff gets done. Making buttermilk and fresh peach popsicles this morning then running errands. Later is the car club meeting. Be nice to see everyone as I’ve been too tired to go hang at the last few meetups. Stay cool and enjoy the weekend!
Hello little Ms. Nelly – you are gorgeous! And I see those kitty-eyes so full of love for your rescuers. Also those ear tufts! Gah! – ded from cute.
I’m categorically avoiding looking at the weather. It’s been miserably hot all week in Philly. And I must do gardening today. Stitch & Bitch is tomorrow.
Last weekend I made an interesting discovery about wildlife rescues. Probably you wonderful people already knew this but it was news to me. I can’t remember if I’ve relayed that the Mr. & Mrs. Robin came back to the nest they built in my rose bush by the front door last year? Not exactly a great place for a nest if you ask me. Anyway – they laid four eggs. They all hatched, but one was clearly “the runt” of the nestlings. On Sunday the poor little thing was unceremoniously kicked out of the nest. This happened twice, so we knew they meant it. With my three cats there was no way I could do anything. I asked google if there were any bird rescues. Well – there are! I found the Schuylkill Wildlife Refuge, a twenty minute drive from me. They are open on Sundays (until 6pm) and took this little one in at no charge! Wow. There are truly some wonderful people out there in the world.
Have a wonderful weekend all!
Thatβs s lovely rescue story. Mom made the right choice of humans to nest near.
Nelly is a cutie pie! I do love tabbies.
Interesting way to name cats, I tend to give my cats one syllable names and they lengthen them, like for Storm I keep calling her Stormy and even Stormy Baby. LOL!
Nothing going on here today it’s too hot to do anything other than sit in front of the fan.
It’s been hot and humid all week and will be the same next week so I gave up on the diet and I’m having ice cream for lunch. I figure it has to have some nutritional value since it’s dairy and frankly at this point I just don’t care.
πππππΌπ¨
Hey, you’re warding off osteoporosis! That’s what I always tell myself when I have ice cream.
Good morning, Miss Nelly.
All is quiet in Duckieville. All the paperwork is done regarding my late FIL, and we are exhausted. Got quite a surprise when ex-step-mother-in-law paid for everything, as long as she didnβt have to take responsibility for anything. Heinous biβ-.
Duckie moulting like crazy. Delicate pink skin showing through blue feathers reminds me of cherry blossoms against a spring sky. Duckie is anything but delicate, though, when it comes to graham crackers. I have to hold one in each hand if Iβm eating them. One for me, one for her.
Playing catch-up today, and then spending tomorrow writing.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Nelly is an excellent choice. And what a sweetheart! Please spoil her rotten!
However. I also like Namozine. ‘Zine for short!
Nelly really lucked out, both with her new family and her new name! Lovely little girl. If Lavender had ear tufts, they could be twins.
So sorry for everybody’s hot, humid weather. PLEASE stay safe, people. Northern Colorado is continuing its streak of wet, cool days. We had more rain in June than we did in all of 2022.
When I push Lav off my lap to get up–she’s a little bitey this morning but says hi to everyone–I’ll go back to the loom for what is my most challenging weaving project to date. It’s very exciting! A small runner for my dresser (actually a repurposed victrola cabinet) has bands of different patterning. It’s challenging because the instructions don’t include treadling for all the different patterns shown in the photo. I’m working backwards from the photo and it’s a fun thing to try. Plus I can make up my own treadlings if I want.
I’ve also been spinning lots of yarn lately, in interesting fibers and combos: one ply of cashmere with one ply of milk fiber (yes that’s a thing), a 2-ply bison yarn that feels like a cloud of soft warmth, alpaca with silk and camel mixed in, llama and paco-vicuna and pure alpaca. Total control over my materials = happy creativity. Many of these new yarns will go into a handwoven serape for my bio dad, who gets cold even in Sacramento.
Hugs to you all, and little love bites from Lav.
Oh Deb that sounds so exciting!
Wish I had such an interesting talent to share with everyone!
Deb, I swear Iβm going to visit you soon, just to drool over your fibres and thungs.
Things, not thungs. π³π
Welcome, Nelly, you’re a cutie.
86 here, maybe thunderstorms later. I have a book on hold at the library but I don’t know if I can go get it. Woke up with a bad headache and it’s slightly better but I don’t want to go out right now and the library closes at 5. They hold for three days, I got the message yesterday, but they close at 5 on Friday so I couldn’t go after work, and they’re closed on Sundays in summer so technically Monday should be day three, so I’ll stop on my way home. If it’s not there I’ll just get it another time. I just got another one on Thursday, anyway.
Best trilogy ever!
Thrilled to see my baby on the Cute! Deb, I think our girls really are twins, Nelly is bitey, too. She is currently in the front window watching the daily thunderstorm, which is not much relief from the heat. As for spoiled, everything in the house is her toy, whether we like it or not.
I’m sensing years of upcoming feline attitude.
Lucky you!
