Weekend Open Thread

Caturday is a great day to practice healthy habits such as yoga. However, as reader Sally G. demonstrates, your cat may have other plans:

Here are two photos I took showing how my cat Mohair Sam makes a big impression on my yoga practice.

Viewed from above, a silky dark gray cat sits on woman's crossed legs
Time to play “How long can you hold this position?”
Close up of a woman's leg showing the impressions of two cat paw prints.
Ooh, that’ll leave a mark.

    How heavy is your cat?!

Hopefully the fire bombs are stopped for tonight. Iโ€™m tired of getting wakened up at night, and I go to bed
at 12 am! Itโ€™s illegal to set off fireworks that late, but they have been doing this since Wednesday ๐Ÿ™„.

Going to try and cut Pretzelโ€™s nails today. Cross your fingers and wish me luck!๐Ÿซค

      Good luck!

Cats have the ability to put every ounce of their weight into one paw at the most sensitive point on your body. Even Jacques who has lost 6 of his 16lbs, can put a bruise on me if he stands just right! ๐Ÿ˜†

How heavy the cat is was also my first though 6rabbits.

I get the impression that Mohair Sam is no lightweight. And you got the impression BECAUSE Mohair Sam is no lightweight…

Well, the Shortcakery’s dusty old attic has now been transformed into a lovely little office/study/reading nook with a south-facing aspect and a view of York Minster’s central tower (just, thanks to a neighbor’s chimney). The fact that the Minster is about eight-tenths of a mile away as the crow flies gives you some idea of how huge it is! The plasterer is coming on Tuesday, and as soon as the loft is painted and furnished I’ll post pics of the room and the view.

In other news, as I’ve been more or less stuck in the house all day for a week – except to vote, vote, vote like a baby stoat on the 4th – I might treat myself to a day out in Knaresborough on Monday.

      The attic transformation sounds wonderful.

    • tara July 6, 2024 / 9:41 am

Yes, please share pictures of your new nook! It sounds wonderful.

      • 6rabbits July 7, 2024 / 10:19 am

        Yes, pics please!

    • AJ July 6, 2024 / 9:52 am

I can’t wait to see pics, sounds loverly.

      • Alice Shortcake July 6, 2024 / 10:47 am

I was hoping to get the plastering done today but I’ll just have to be patient.

Meanwhile, the hot topic of conversation in Britain is of course…will Larry the 10 Downing Street cat get along with Kier Starmer?

        • Georgiana July 6, 2024 / 11:26 am

Kier Starmer has better make nice with Larry otherwise he might find himself on the wrong side of popular opinion.

        • allein ๐Ÿพ July 6, 2024 / 11:40 am

          Asking the important questions!

I love the officer knocking on the door to get someone to let Larry in.

          • 6rabbits July 7, 2024 / 10:21 am

Love how Larry just waits calmly cos he KNOWS someone will let him in!

    • DEBG July 6, 2024 / 12:21 pm

I’m so happy for you! Can’t wait to see the photos.

      • Alice Shortcake July 6, 2024 / 4:11 pm

I’ve just been up to the loft with my binoculars, through which I can also make out the very tip of the Chapter House roof and a few pinnacles of the West Towers. I just hope none of the neighbours saw me and got the wrong impression!

Mohair Sam has the most gorgeous coat! What a beauty! Luckily mine just watch when I pull out the yoga mat.

We are having a roller coaster of a week here. It seems that the repair work to the outside of my house by Next Door’s contractors might finally be finished. At the last walk through a week ago, there were still a few issues whose origins weren’t clear. They didn’t balk or argue, just took are of it. They’ve been very pleasant and polite to work with. My plaster guy, who took care of my tenant’s front room while she was out on vacation, is repairing the inside stairwell (three stories – quite a job!). He is almost done with repairing the cracks and so we discussed paint options yesterday. I’m very excited about the color scheme. I chose a pale pear-greenish-yellow for the walls, white ceilings and stair risers, and dark walnut for the baseboards. The floors are polished red cedar. There is a skylight in the stairwell so the color of the walls will change with the light outside. That’s the good news. The bad news is, it seems squatters have moved into the house on the other side of me. Windows have been opened, curtains drawn, pot smoke, and strange bumps and clangs come from there. The neighbor (behind the property and mine) and I are strategizing about what to do. A few weeks ago, squatters burned down an empty house a few blocks from us, last week 12 were removed from a building a block from us, and now here we are. I won’t go on and on about it. Suffice to say, it’s distressing.

Allein, thank you for posting the goodest doggies here every Saturday. I saw a car with the “say hi to your dog from me” bumper sticker on it last week. ๐Ÿฅฐ

    Happy weekend all.

    • AJ July 6, 2024 / 9:51 am

The renos sound gorgeous but yikes about the squatters. Hopefully the situation will resolve itself peacefully. Our neighborhood has had various homeless sleeping on the sidewalks or their cars but thankfully they’ve been relatively decent and don’t cause issues. A couple days here and then they move on. I think it helps that I have at least 3 neighbors that are home most of the day so they’re always keeping an eye on the street.

    • allein ๐Ÿพ July 6, 2024 / 10:20 am

I’ve never put stickers on my car but I have been contemplating getting the license plate frame.

Also the calendar is out so as soon as B&N has it in store I will pick it up.

I just bought the baseball cap in maroon.

    • DEBG July 6, 2024 / 12:22 pm

Your house will be gorgeous! Hope the squatter situation improves.

    • 6rabbits July 7, 2024 / 10:24 am

Squatter situation is horrid! Wishing you peace!

Such a handsome boi, and I just don’t understand cat physics. They can be the tiniest fluffball but somehow when on you cats all turn into 10 lb bricks. My dogs are like that too. I’ll end up with marks or bruises in odd places, and it’s from them.

Sleepy day so far. Finding it hard to get motivated. Grocery shopping, errands, and some baking later. Found a recipe for a no bake white chocolate raspberry cheesecake that I’m going to try later. Fingers crossed that it comes out ok, I’ve reduced the size of the pie plus made some ingredient changes to make it dairy and gluten free. And some muffins for breakfasts next week. Tomorrow hope I don’t melt. We and the Lego club are putting on a display at a local park so I’ll be outside most of the day. I’ll have to remember to drink tons of water. Luckily we’ll have some pop-up canopies for shade. Enjoy the weekend everyone and stay cool!

    • 6rabbits July 7, 2024 / 10:25 am

I would love to see the LEGO display!

  6. Georgiana July 6, 2024 / 10:18 am

    Mohair Sam is gorgeous!

I’ve got great news this week!

It’s been the worst continuous spell of dangerously hot weather we’ve ever had here (that’s not the great news) so my husband and I finally bit the bullet and called to get an estimate of how much it would cost to get central air conditioning.

I couldn’t believe what the guy told us!

To buy and install a Thermopompe (heat pump) at the house cost $9,841.86 (Canadian) but with all the Government subsidies and financial aid we will pay only is $2,441.86!!!

Still a big purchase but so worth it, the guys are coming next week to install it and let me tell you I can’t wait!!

    • DEBG July 6, 2024 / 12:23 pm

Huzzah! Let us know how it goes.

  7. EAG46 July 6, 2024 / 10:45 am

Mohair Sam is a great cat name, and he looks lovely. As I write this [10:45 AM, east coast USA] it is 88 degrees F and getting hotter. Thank the gods for AC. If you’re going to be in the heat wave, please stay inside and hydrate. Your animal friends should be hydrated too.

  8. DEBG July 6, 2024 / 12:19 pm

Mohair Sam is a “better” yoga partner than my Sevi! Sevi only gets up next to me, so that when I change position he’s in the way. And Sevi doesn’t leave marks. Mohair Sam is also beautiful.

My house guest is sitting next to me as I type. She’s knitting, and we just hauled a loom up into my condo that she will take with her. We’re about to start a weaving lesson with another friend of mine. We’ve been spinning, yarn shopping, thrift store crawling, etc. since she got here on Wednesday–it’s been fantastic. Now she just got to see her first We Rate Dogs video, and we laughed ourselves silly. Thanks, Allein. We also enjoyed Larry the cat.

    Happy day, everybody!

Hating the heat, for everyone and everything.

  10. Ricky & Bibi's Mom July 6, 2024 / 8:10 pm

Mohair Sam is indeed, a most excellent nameโ€”and I’m sure a Most Excellent Cat!

  11. fkaWaldenPond July 6, 2024 / 9:47 pm

Ha! That’s great!– clearly Mohair Sam is good at holding a still, calm position. And great name for him– lucky cool woman to be paired with such a cool cat. ๐Ÿ™‚
