Ellie’s Best Friend

A dog and an elephant stroll a grassy field side by side

Spend a peaceful moment with Cha Ba and her best friend, a dog named Yo Yo. The pair roam the Elephant Nature Park every day, climbing dirt piles, strolling along the river, just being there for each other.

I think that poor Cha Ba got a little frustrated that she couldn’t climd the dirt hill to get to her best friend, luckily Yo Yo came back down to her.

I agree with Georgiana, Cha Ba was wondering why she can’t climb up there if the dogs can.

Speaking of inter-species relationships, has anyone else seen the video of the elephant saving the gazelle from drowning? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/I3zOJFvsma8 I have so many questions. It looks like the gazelle really couldn’t get out. It’s a zoo–why would they have a dangerous pond that animals can’t climb out of? Why weren’t the humans helping the gazelle instead of watching? Why weren’t the other gazelles bothered? Was it a real situation? But it honestly does look like the elephant, on purpose, helped the gazelle get out of the water. I know elephants will try to save their own calves, but a different species? What are we seeing?

VERY interesting video! I agree the elephant definitely helped the gazelle on purpose.
I’ve watched it a few times now.
I don’t know why the pond is so deep. With all the rocks around it looks like none of the animals would have an easy time getting out. I don’t think it’s meant to be swum in? Just as a source for drinks maybe? There is a bigger pond to the right that has an easy access to get in and out.
It happened so quickly, I think anyone who went for help was too late, and the people around could most likely not have accessed the enclosure, as it is with all zoos. Don’t know what country, I would like to know what they’re saying, but it seems to be encouraging? Love the elephant’s trumpet sound after. Like “I don’t wanna have to do that again, Gary!”
Maybe the other gazelles didn’t realize? Or it could be that “Gary” is the kind of gazelle that’s always in trouble cos he did something stupid, so they just ignored him?🤷🏼‍♀️
I’m not surprised at an elephant helping another animal that they live so closely with.
      Thanks for sharing!

I can answer one of your questions (with the usual proviso that, like the video itself, this comes from the Internet, so who knows?). I linked the version of the video I did because there were no ads, but it appeared elsewhere, including in news articles, and they agree it’s La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In fact, as of today, when I Google aurora zoo guatemala elephants, most of what comes up is links to news articles about this incident. You’re right that ordinary zoo visitors wouldn’t have been able to get in the enclosure–that’s a stupid mistake on my part. For some reason, I imagined this being zoo employees cheering on the elephant to do the job instead of doing it themselves.

I am sure I’m reading too much into this, but I’ve always regarded as fanciful the idea that there are other species on earth that deserve personhood. Certainly we should have laws against cruelty to animals, but that doesn’t mean treating them as equivalent to humans. But if an elephant can decide to rescue a different species, for some reason that just puts a spin on it I’d never thought of before. Maybe they ARE “smart” the same way we are (whatever that means).

I usually read and thus comment after everyone else and thus too late to get any reaction. Thanks for reading and responding.

Oops! There is no pond to the right! That’s a wall. Looked up many videos of this. Don’t know why I thought it was a pond?
