One of my college roommates went to grad school and had to teach freshman composition. I went to visit her one weekend and she let me read a few of the papers she had to grade. I was amazed at the sheer number of grammar and punctuation errors some people could pack into one short paragraph. And most of them didn’t even have the excuse that English wasn’t their first language.

Ever heard of a plumb tree? Not autocorrect either. This from a lawyer discussing a property line dispute.

            • Julie October 22, 2016 / 6:17 pm

Probably similar in concept to a “plumb line” which is used to find a perfectly vertical line. Perhaps the “plumb tree” was meant to be a geographical marker for an imaginary vertical line for property demarcation purposes.

It’s raining. I don’t usually hear the rain that well from inside. I woke up at some dark unknown hour and at first thought I was hearing the air running but no, it was the steady pouring rain on my roof. And I need to go shopping and see if I can find something to wear to a wedding next Friday. I don’t really have anything I can/want to wear (except the dress I wore to the bride’s sister’s wedding last summer and I don’t really want to wear the same thing). I had no luck at the mall last night but I saw something cute on Target’s website (of all places) and they might have it in the store near me so I figure it’s worth a shot. Hopefully the rain will stop this afternoon.

It’s a heavy duty nylon series of straps and ratchety things (I haven’t unwrapped it yet, just seen the pictures). Given that we need to move plants into the basement this week end and given that we have to downsize and get TONS of stuff out of our attic and basement I figured it might be a good investment. On Thursday I drove through a “wintry mix” (thank heavens I got snow tires last week!) to attend “make up” oral examinations for students who didn’t graduate last spring. My student passed–it wasn’t pretty, but he passed.

  15. Laura October 22, 2016 / 2:56 pm

Sounds like there’s a great assortment of plans for the weekend here. Gigi, feel better soon! You need to be healthy so you can enjoy being retired. 🙂

I must say, having a therapy dog has turned into a *fantastic* retirement activity for my husband. He’s now giving other folks from his therapy group their initial tour of the VA hospital and helping them through the paperwork — it being a government facility, you *know* there’s paperwork. He’s also been invited to regularly visit a young soldier who came back from Afghanistan in a coma and just came out of it recently. He’s still in pretty bad shape, but he loves dogs, so everyone figures having a puppy to pet regularly can’t hurt and might help. So we shall see.

But now he’s busy trying to figure out how best to do the Halloween costume we figured out for Melody. Sebastian’s easy — he’ll be a little spider. 🙂 Melody, I saw a picture of a black dog with a skeleton outline painted on it in white, so he’s decided she HAS to be a skeleton, so he’s figuring out what best to use on her. Today he got some spray-on color, but he’s also going to try greasepaint. For a man who’s always thought dressing up dogs was idiotic, I must say he’s dived into it with total enthusiasm!

I sent my ballot in, so I have voted. And our county even gives us a sticker when they send out the vote by mail stuff, so I won’t be deprived of my “I voted” sticker. 🙂

This week was just brutal, nonstop appearances by everybody from the Prez on down. We were working nonstop from mid-morning until midnight a couple of days, which is a bit much. The weekend looks to be much quieter, thank heaven; we all need some recuperation time! I’m sure the Candidate does, too. I still cannot *imagine* the energy required to campaign as much as these folks do. It’s a real skill.

    Have a great weekend, everybody!

  16. Faye October 22, 2016 / 3:27 pm

Today is the first day in three weeks that I feel well and awake. Two weeks of body aches and headcold. One week very sleepy. Then another week of different aches. Took Tylenol and slept every chance I could get.

Something wonderful happened! I found a wonderful art studio fifteen minutes from my house. A professional painter/artist gives lessons to children during the day and adults at night.

I’ve been driving right past it for years. It is definitely an ask and you shall be answered occurrence because I never would have found it without one last desperate Google for adult art classes.

The best part is the price: $25 dollars per 2hr lesson. There are probably material fees. But every other place I found was over an hour away and cost hundreds of dollars.

I’m starting this Tuesday night! Here is a link:
    http://www.theartstudiorvc.com/

    • Faye October 22, 2016 / 7:02 pm

When my dogs used to eat their own or the others barf my brain would stop all other activity but the one thought: I DID NOT JUST SEE THAT!!! But then again I didn’t have to clean it up. So who was I to look down on that behavior.

Julie, there’s another possibility: they had a dog from the neighborhood over to eat it. You. Will. Never. Know.

      • Julie October 23, 2016 / 10:24 am

Faye – since both dogs are the same size, I am often wondering “Which dog did this?” Especially when I find poop in the house. Many a time I have wished there was a fast, inexpensive method for DNA testing dog poop, so at least I would know which dog did the deed. I feel like Dog Poop CSI when we have a rainy spell or at the beginning of winter, because that’s when I am most likely to find “accidents” that are not really acccidents.

        • Faye October 23, 2016 / 3:20 pm

Julie, One of my favorite observations is that a great number of humans spend more time than we realize talking/posting about dog poop. Or any pet poop for that matter.

It’s a topic that probably goes back to the first hominids.

          • Julie October 23, 2016 / 5:17 pm

I absolutely spend a RIDICULOUS amount of time in the dog poop space:

            1. Looking for dog poop
            2. Picking up dog poop
            3. Negotiating with my dog(s) to poop
            4. Visually analyzing dog poop
            5. Checking for poop bags before we go outside
            6. Finding poop bags in every pocket of every jacket I own
            7. Buying poop bags in bulk on Amazon

I could go on and on and on…..

            Sad face emoji ?

            • Murray C. October 23, 2016 / 5:34 pm

Bunny poop has a different set of issues but nonetheless involves the bunny parent in just as many ways.
Is the poop a good size?
              Is it a good consistency?
Is it a regular poop or a cecal and why doesn’t this rabbit eat his cecal??
              Are there enough of them?
Why is this rabbit pooping outside his litter box?
Yep, not far off. Rabbits and their poop (motility, if we are to be polite) are really important so much thought is given

              • Julie October 23, 2016 / 9:31 pm

                Me too 🙁

          • Julie October 23, 2016 / 5:20 pm

I think people with babies also talk about poop a great deal.

            • Faye October 23, 2016 / 9:23 pm

This is true. Baby poop. Big topic.
Rabbit poop sounds more complicated than dog poop!
Don’t get me started on the topic of Chinchilla poop.

In my first family we talked about people poop a lot. As in exiting the bathroom and announcing, “That was a good one.” I don’t have enough life experience to know if that was just us and/or a characteristic of Jewishness.

The people I live with now are not big poop talkers. They won’t even have a conversation through the bathroom door. Frustrating.

Here’s another thing I want to know about dog people I meet: do you let your dog lick your toes. Best foot massage ever. This is where I divide up dog owners: dog sleeps in bed or not. Humans toes get licked or not. I’m sure there are other criteria but those are mine.

              • Julie October 23, 2016 / 9:41 pm

I don’t just let my dogs lick my feet, I let them lick my face. A lot of people think this is insane/incomprehensibly disgusting. It all started innocently enough…I somehow got Chico to associate me saying “Chico give me kiss” with him licking my nose. Then the licking just gradually spread from there and now every exposed surface is fair game. I think he has a bit of seasonal affective disorder in the winter, not from lack of sunlight, but from lack of exposed skin to lick in the winter months.

I remember having a conversation with a friend: Do you let your dog lick your face? His response: “OF COURSE!”

So my measure of dog owners is: dog licks face or not.

              • allein ? October 23, 2016 / 9:42 pm

I don’t like being licked but I am more than happy to share my bed with a little pooch. Not sure I’d want a big dog to sleep with me, though.

              • Murray C. October 23, 2016 / 9:47 pm

Hilarious! I can’t stand having my feet touched – they say you can’t tickle yourself but I beg to differ, I have trouble handling my own tootsies. My mother used to let our dog lick her feet and she’d just laugh and laugh and he looked so blissed out.

                • Julie October 23, 2016 / 9:59 pm

Dogs lick each other as a form of bonding. So, when a dog licks his human he is bonding with said human. That’s probably why the dog looked blissed out.

                  • Murray C. October 23, 2016 / 10:09 pm

    Crazy week coming up.
Mid term paper due Thursday; not written yet.
AGM Tuesday, where the discussion over allowing pets will blaze.
Flu shots today, where I made the horrible mistake of watching hubby get his shot. I haven’t turned that pale in a long time.
Pre-op stuff for surgery on November 7.
    NOT looking forward to Hallowe’en.

        • allein ? October 22, 2016 / 9:57 pm

Me, too. My light is on a timer, but I wouldn’t leave it off because I’m right at the top of the stairs and I wouldn’t want it to be too dark if any kids do come up (there are three other units up here). Being right next to the stairs is also why I tend to not be home on Halloween, otherwise I would hear them all traipsing up and down the stairs. Though I really don’t know what kind of traffic we get, because my first Halloween here was right after Sandy and the power was still out, so there was no trick-or-treating (the township declared a day the following week for a make-up Halloween but I didn’t see too many kids out that night) and the last couple years I just stayed out until later. Being that it is a Monday this year, I haven’t decided if I will be home or not.

        • Phred's Mom October 23, 2016 / 9:00 am

Lock the door, wear only socks for silence,
lower the light(s), put the phone on vibrate,
mute the tv/computer. Done. Peace. And
all the chocolate for yourself. Did this once
when life was handing me too much.

            • Phred's Mom October 23, 2016 / 6:19 pm

              You are so polite, Murray.
I just turn off the light.
              And, I always buy only
goodies we like, in case not
many kids show and we have
              leftovers. Last year, only
              four! The parents are getting
              timid or something. It’s a
              phenomenon that has been
              occurring more and more over
              the last few years. Another
              tradition goes *poof*

              • Faye October 23, 2016 / 9:26 pm

We leave candy on the porch in a plastic witches’ cauldron. Kids are pretty honorable.

Good luck with it all, Duckie.

  20. allein ? October 22, 2016 / 10:01 pm

So I went looking for dresses but I didn’t find anything. Then I stopped at my old B&N to see if my friend was working. He was, so we chatted a bit. Then I came home and realized I probably shouldn’t listen to the annual ghost stories episode of one of my podcasts while driving home on winding, wooded roads with few streetlights.

After I got home I finally opened my calendar. I was good and didn’t look at all the pictures or read any captions, though I did read through all the holidays. My birthday is National Coffee Day. I don’t drink coffee. Also, NTMTOM…totally not how I pictured him.

Also at the bookstore I saw this book that some people here might be interested in:
The Lion in the Living Room: How House Cats Tamed Us and Took Over the World by Abigail Tucker.

  21. Patty October 22, 2016 / 11:31 pm

I spent the day (and yesterday), starting at 7 am, at my daughter’s house having a yard sale with 3 of my 4 daughters. Lots of chasing grandkids, and lifting things, and organizing things on tables. I didn’t have much to sell, so basically it was just to help the girls and hang out with them. We closed the sale down around 6 pm, and it was time to go take the dog out to pee, and feed her and the cat. Then it was back out the door to go to my brother’s birthday party, where I spent 2 hrs eating tacos and chasing more kids. It’s shortly after 10, and I am finally home for the day, and worn out. Tomorrow I plan to do nothing.
Sophie went to the vet thursday, she weighs 4.5 lbs, which is about a pound less than Gracie. I wore my poncho to the vet so she could hide under it when we first went in. She barked way less than I expected, and when she heard the vet say hello, she popped her head out of the neck of the poncho. He said, “You just got her, didn’t you?” I told him I’d had her almost a week, and he said “Well, she has definitely decided you are her safe person, hasn’t she?” She has gotten better about barking already. She barked at cars driving by at first. Now she ignores cars, stopped barking at the bicyclists, and the neighbors across the street. So far, pedestrians still get yapped at, but if I say “Sophie, quiet” she barks in a whisper. That’s an improvement over the loud yapping. I think she just needs to get used to seeing people and realize they aren’t all out to get her.

    • Dulcie October 22, 2016 / 11:40 pm

So nice to hear Patty! Sophie is going to have a great life. Love that she can whisper bark.

    • Faye October 23, 2016 / 8:40 am

What a busy day Patty. Sophie sounds wonderful. Smart girl is learning.

    • Murray C. October 23, 2016 / 8:52 am

Garage sales are exhausting enough without having to attend to children! And Sopie sounds like a gem -a whisper bark is adorable – the canine equivalent to the silent meow, I reckon.

  23. Jan October 23, 2016 / 11:25 am

Long day yesterday! Went over to my mom’s (about 2hrs away including car ferry) and we planted a ton of flower bulbs, then I cleared a path of overgrown cedar and forsythia branches, then I helped my dad remove and chop up a huge over hanging alder branch from over their drive way. Then we made a pumpkin pie out of the fresh pumpkin puree that I made last weekend. It was DEEE-LISH!

Didn’t get home until past 7:30pm and Lily has been an absolute maniac ever since. I should have taken her with me and stayed overnight. Next time! She loves my dad (who swears he’s not a cat person) so that would have been lots of fun!

    I found a dress!

    • fkaWaldenPond October 23, 2016 / 8:43 pm

I quite like it! Is this for the wedding?

      • allein ? October 23, 2016 / 8:51 pm

Yeah. I figure I’ll dress it up a bit with some jewelry. I looked for a sweater, too, but they only had a couple at the store. I liked how they looked on the hanger with the dress but when I tried them on the sweater fell across the top at a weird angle. I looked at a couple other places but didn’t see anything. I have something I can wear that’s not ideal but nice enough and will keep me from freezing if it’s cold.

The fabric is a nice weight, too, so it doesn’t show every bump under it. I don’t look quite as good in it as the model does, but it’ll work. 😉 (I’ll probably lose the belt that came with it, though. I feel those skinny ones often aren’t all that flattering, and I’m not crazy about the bright gold buckle.)

        • fkaWaldenPond October 23, 2016 / 9:08 pm

Initially I was concerned you would be chilly without sleeves but then realized you may be dancing, having some vino; you know good times so sleeveless and a wrap or fancy cardigan sounds like a solid plan.
I am also with you on the fabric that doesn’t show every bump with the light.
Again, nicely done. I really like it!

          • allein ? October 23, 2016 / 9:12 pm

            Thanks!

Not much of a dancer. No vino, but there may be other…warmth-inducing beverages on my personal menu. 😉 I probably won’t be driving, so…

            • Phred's Mom October 24, 2016 / 8:57 am

              Go for it, Allein.
              Have a blast.
              You will look great.
              Good taste.

    • Faye October 23, 2016 / 9:30 pm

Ooo. Classy. Yes. You can dress that up or down. Take one pic foe us!

    • Murray C. October 23, 2016 / 9:31 pm

      NICE! IS that you?????

      • allein ? October 23, 2016 / 9:49 pm

Nope. I am a 5’4″ pasty-pale person with straightish brown hair. (According to the website, the model is 5’10”. I like that they tell you that; gives you an idea of where the length might fall on you.) I took the day off Friday and I plan to get my hair cut in the afternoon so it will be freshly blown out by someone who knows what she’s doing (the wedding is at 5:00). Hopefully the weather will be cooperative.

        • fkaWaldenPond October 23, 2016 / 9:52 pm

Ok, now you have started it. 😉 How are you going to get your hair done? btw, I would say you were fair with chestnut hair. 🙂

          • allein ? October 23, 2016 / 10:04 pm

I don’t know yet. It’s a little past my shoulders. I think I want to ask her to do less layering, but I don’t want to go too short so I can’t really get rid of all of them at this point.

            • fkaWaldenPond October 23, 2016 / 11:28 pm

Google ‘shoulder length blunt cut’ and there are a tonne of options. Regardless, I am sure you will look great.

  28. Murray C. October 23, 2016 / 10:07 pm

Well, the day has ended on a good note. All the plants but one that need bringing in are in. Had a moment of panic when the fluorescent fixture wouldn’t work but all that has been resolved and my lovely little corner in an otherwise unprepossessing basement is full of greenery. All that’s left is to dig up an agapanthus. I’ve gotten one to overwinter one year in the garden but not a second time. Hubby was amazed at how difficult it was to carry all that stuff to the basement, a chore I’ve done by myself forEVER. I didn’t end up using the strap I bought but am certain to find uses for it when we have to start carrying stuff down from the attic and up from the basement as we do the downsizing thing. Now I just have to get my weed burner working – weeds are taking over my pathways and I can’t dig them the usual way right now so I’m going to try to singe them into oblivion.

    • Faye October 24, 2016 / 9:30 am

      Agapanthus. Good pet name. ?

  29. AJ October 23, 2016 / 10:08 pm

Love this kitty cat!!! Looks like someone got started early on the cat nip. Good to hear about everyone’s weekend. Had an absolutely crazy last 4 days. Flew out to pack up some of my mom’s stuff and move her into an assisted living place near to my brother. She was in rehab for the last 4 weeks after a small stroke. Found a lovely place for her but it will take some time for her to adjust. And flying home tonight, my right ear stopped up and still hasn’t popped so I’m just miserable. Thankfully I see the dr. tomorrow for my blood work results so I may ask what I can do for my ear if it doesn’t clear up. Have a great week everyone!

    • Murray C. October 23, 2016 / 10:13 pm

Oooh, AJ, that’s the worst. I always have terrible pain when a plane was coming in for a landing. I’ve learned that the best thing to do is to take antihistamines an hour or so before and it’s a miracle. Good luck tomorrow. And I hope your Mom does well in her new digs.
