April Fool! (Update)

Sorry, folks, but there’s no such thing as a kitten replicator (apart from other kittens). It’s just one of the many pranks you’re likely to fall for as you surf the Web on April Fool’s Day. If you see any good pranks, put a link to them in the comments. (Update: The home page is back to normal, but if you missed the gag or want to see it again, it’s here.)

I won’t need the kitten replicator if I can have that kitten right there.

    • allein April 1, 2016 / 8:49 am

      Apparently I missed it. πŸ™

        • allein April 1, 2016 / 9:15 am

I just saw it; I get new post notification emails, so I don’t usually go through the homepage, but I just went there on my tablet so I could see the CO link someone else posted (CO is blocked on my work computer) and saw it. Very cute and I want one.

        • Clairdelune April 1, 2016 / 12:20 pm

That was CRUEL, NTMTOM! I was all set to purchase the USB drive so I could get one kitten just like the one in the picture… and maybe a couple more… was anticipating happy hours with fuzzballs on my lap… just another broken dream. Siggghh. **face palm**

    Ha ha ha.

  3. beemoused April 1, 2016 / 6:20 am

If this were any other site, I would have been terrified to push the “order now” button. Well played, NTMTOM! A totally awesome prank!

  4. allein April 1, 2016 / 7:29 am

One I saw on Easter was wrapping grapes in mini chocolate egg wrappers for the kids’ lunchboxes. πŸ˜‰

    • 6rabbits April 1, 2016 / 7:41 am

      Oh that is awesome!!

      • allein April 1, 2016 / 8:38 am

(Tried to post this before but my tablet wasn’t cooperating.)

Ack! Yeah, that was a big mistake. What sets that prank apart is that it affects people who aren’t in on the joke, namely the recipients of the emails. Also, making the “mic drop” too easy to use by mistake was a problem.

I have never liked April Fool’s Day.

      • Catwhisperer April 1, 2016 / 1:29 pm

It’s not my favorite, either, but this “prank” of Mike’s is delightful!

      • 6rabbits April 1, 2016 / 11:21 pm

I hate when it falls on a school day?

    • Mariana Paes April 1, 2016 / 8:50 am

good lord, that’s amazing!!! I wanna tag along in their next adventure!!

  5. LunaChickFringe April 1, 2016 / 8:45 am

Great prank but I”m not gonna lie. At first Chrome could not find your page this morning and I got a full on case of the lady vapors! I even went and checked Facebook to see if you were still there.

    • allein April 1, 2016 / 9:20 am

I had a problem last night. First it told me I wasn’t on the internet, even though I was (unless I managed to catch a very brief outage) and then I got a weird error. I assumed it was just my computer..

  6. birdcage April 1, 2016 / 8:47 am

I really wanted a kitten replicator. I did race to push that button.

E-tailer ThinkGeek does April Fools day big every year. Their selection of fake products includes the Useless Light Switch:

My favorite is still the Unicorn meat.

    • Chase April 1, 2016 / 1:23 pm

Thanks for this list! So many fun ones! Your site definitely deserves to be included!!

  8. murkle46 April 1, 2016 / 9:55 am

I would like to point out that that is one “stinking” cute kitten.

I remember this GIF! I used it in a post on CO, representing a “kitten dispenser,” if I remember correctly.

      • debg April 1, 2016 / 10:21 am

One of my all time faves.

      • Clairdelune April 1, 2016 / 12:59 pm

Every home should have one – as well as a puppy dispenser for those so inclined.

      • Faye April 1, 2016 / 4:17 pm

        I love this gif. Elegant.

I remember CO April Fools Day gags were always cute and harmless. Likewise, the Dog Shaming website would switch over for a day for things like ‘Cat Shaming’ or ‘Baby Shaming’, etc. Still funny, still cute, and harmless.

So I appreciate you keeping up the grand tradition of funny/sweet and harmless gags for April First NTMTOM.

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike April 1, 2016 / 10:19 am

Thank you. It was really important to me that I get an AFD tradition started on my site. (And welcome to the comments section, come back soon.)

    Hi

This April fool joke seems to have broken ‘notthatmiketheothermike’!! I can’t get off it, and i think I’ve tried everything, even closing the tab and trying again in a new one. Is anyone else having a problem…??

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike April 1, 2016 / 11:08 am

Welcome, Rosemary! Everything will be back to normal soon. If you were able to leave a comment, then you’re still in the right place.

      “wrap around front perches”!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  12. AB April 1, 2016 / 11:54 am

Thanks for posting this! I needed cheering up today, and this did the trick πŸ™‚ I totally fell for it and thought it was some sort of weird way of Mike going out of business or some sort of scammer having hijacked the site. I fully expected to be asked for my credit card number when I clicked the link (yes, I’m gullible). I was genuinely delighted to be redirected and see the words “April Fools”!

  13. SoccerSue April 1, 2016 / 11:57 am

My all time favorite April Fools prank was set up by one of my former co-workers. I work in a medical office, and one year on April 1st she sent a message to the physician assistant, asking him to call a lady who wasn’t a patient but just had a quick question. She gave him a work number and said the lady’s last name was Mains, first name Myra.

The number was for a local funeral home, so the PA called the funeral home and said, “Hi, may I speak to Myra Mains?” (say it quickly) He’s a very smart guy, so we were surprised it took him so long to catch on. πŸ˜€

      Kind of gruesome, but funny!

My intro to all the TOMfoolery wasan email I got from the dog sitting site I use and to me it seemed believeable so it took me about 1/2 hour before I realized it was an April Fool’s Day joke. Guess that’s what happens when you don’t have coffee before reading your email. The line about oven mitts should have been the give-away though.

    • Clairdelune April 1, 2016 / 12:30 pm

Jut think how useful that would be if you wanted to find out the real mood of your cat or new boyfriend?

  15. belphebe April 1, 2016 / 12:50 pm

If you don’t click the link fast enough, the USB drive is quickly “sold out”. However, I took a chance there would be a backorder list. There isn’t one, darn it! πŸ˜‰

Lee Valley Tools started an AFD tradition several years ago, designing new tools for their customers. They actually build a prototype and in some cases created a video for how to use it.
This year it’s a Precision Rotary Tool Holder. Check out the video to see how it works:

One of their AFD pranks from several years ago was made into a real product: the Precision Story Tape

See, that’s the kind of commitment I admire. The best gags are created by people who are experts in the subject matter and can create a spoof that sounds credible.

    • Ms Can Opener April 1, 2016 / 5:36 pm

The ad even contains one of my favorite words ever – Penultimate. As good as a NTMTOM dissertation.

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike April 1, 2016 / 3:25 pm

      Sounds like me, post-college.

One of the surprising side benefits of this prank is that we’re getting to meet new commenters for the first time. Welcome, JK, and everyone!

  16. Elaine C Williamson April 1, 2016 / 6:33 pm

That was probably the funniest, definitely the cutest, April Fool’s joke I have ever seen.
