Once upon a time, there was a dog who saw his reflection in a bowl of water. “That dog has a bone,” thought the dog. “I will take the bone and then I will have a bone.” But alas, the bowl had been manufactured by the Aesop Practical Joke Company, and the dog became very confused. And his nose got wet. Well, wetter.

This is worse than the quarter-glued-to-the-sidewalk trick, Faye.
Awww poor doggie. What a mean trick! I hope he gets a treat anyway…?
I wonder how long until he really learns that there’s no bone. Or whether it makes him question the existence of his other toys.
Existential crisis brought on by drinking. Poor doggie.
Drinking induced existential crisis!!!! Ha ha ha!!
HAhahahahahaha!!!!
I feel bad that his frustration amuses me… but it does.
I’m in the same boat. Guilty pleasures . . .
Unintentional doggie conundrum.
Due to my fragile post-election emotional state, this brought tears of pity to my eyes.
I know what you mean. I feel bad for the poor doggie; at the same time I admire what I think is actually a sign of his intelligence. I’m sure he’ll figure it out eventually, or at least accept that the answer is unknowable. And he’s awfully cute.
Yes, bonehead.?
Aw…adorable confuzzlement. I hope his hoomans gave him a real bone after that.
This is truly dark humor, funny but also a depressing metaphor for life. Like all our hopes and dreams are but painted silhouettes and chasing after them only brings a damp nose and ultimate despair.
Now I’m going to go give my Lab a big biscuit and my chi a piece of apple in an attempt to balance out the darkness.
Take it from Henri: life is cruel.
LOVE Henri. I have to admit I was hoping it was a video.
Was saving this for this weekend’s open thread, but I thought this was a good place for it.
Slow-mo-drinking doggie!
Isn’t that cool, they make their tongues into little ladles.
I do not like practical jokes when they are played on people but playing them on animals seems even more cruel. I hope this is a one of than that his human doesn’t do this to him all the time.
I’m going on the assumption that the humans didn’t realize the bone on the bottom of the dish would confuse the pup so much when they bought it.
I’m with you on that, Allein – I would buy a bowl like that just because I might like the graphic. I’d never think the poor doggie would be bamboozled by it. If he’s smart enough to think it’s real I’ll bet he’s smart enough to figure out it’s not real – but he needs to give it the old college try.
Yes, I agree. I think they bought the bowl simply because they thought it was cute but it came with unintended consequences!
Dogs are smart. He will soon understand that there is no toy there. But I wonder if that means he will no longer play with his real toys.
